James – one thing SOME people do with DVD’s that aren’t released to CD is just to run the audio from your DVD player into a cd recorder and then use some software to clean it up (insert track markers, etc.). You would of course only want to do this for your own personal use, but I’ve done this with some of my favorie live dvd’s where an album’s not available (including Lu’s 1998 ACL dvd) so I could listen to the audio via my ipod, etc.
If you’re interested in more details, just shoot me a private message.
Yup – good advice. On my Macs, I’ve used an open source (i.e., free) player called VLC to play the audio portion of a DVD from the Mac’s DVD drive & another application (shareware) called Audio Hijack Pro to capture the audio to one large AIFF file. Then, I use a third application (also shareware) called Amadeus Pro to break the large AIFF file into separate ones for each track. Finally, iTunes can convert the AIFFs to ACC (or MP3) files for my iPods. (Amadeus Pro can also convert to AAC / MP3 format). I highly recommend all these applications for you Mac owners out there.
As an aside, the AIFF files can also be burned directly to a CD-R, which will play like any audio CD on those players that can play CD-R discs…
