yep, you need that one, too. actually, you need everything this lady ever recorded. she’s a genius.

it boggles the mind that sam phillips has yet to be recognized as, like, one the greatest things that ever happened to Music. it’s a shame.

    greetings et al. 😀

    (edit: it’s BUTTON, sorry.)

this is wonderful, tom. the new album feels like a natural follow-up to her “long play” project and also a departure. she wanted to imprint something of a jukebox feel to the songs, and she nailed it. not a rotten apple in that basket.

by the way, neko case’s new album is streaming since yesterday. haven’t listened to it yet, but i already love it.

no, no, not as BADASS. this one has a very dated (in the best sense possible, she was shooting for something out of the 60s) feel to it. M&B seems fresher (even being 19 years older).

i confess i rather like, maybe prefer, sam phillips at her most low-key (basically every single album of hers after the slightly underwhelming, so-very-loud OMNIPOP, esp. A BOOT AND A SHOE), but i hold a very special place in my heart for THE INDESCRIBABLE WOW (my favorite) and M&B. the woman can write explosive pop songs and heart-tugging ballads (and, better yet, heart-tugging pop songs and explosive ballads).

and i’m REALLY impressed with neko’s new album. closer to FURNACE ROOM LULLABY + FOX CONFESSOR (her best, imo) than MIDDLE CYCLONE. narratives that feel more personal (FRL, FC) than imaginary (MC). “nearly midnight, honolulu” through to nico’s cover (“afraid”): 4 of the best tracks of the year. ‘honolulu’ may be the loveliest thing she ever created after ‘star witness’.

lw, sam phillips, iris dement, neko case, gillian welch.

sometimes i wonder about my resolutely awesome taste in music… 😀
