Hey, Lafayette, I’m new to this cyber age: how does one send or receive a “subliminal” text message as opposed to any other kind? Maybe I’m just the kind of guy who can’t pick up on subliminal communiques in face to face talks, but this notion of cybersubliminality has me scratching my head.
Subliminal in that I was receiving lyrics as she was singing “Joy” and then an “Oh, wow, an AC/DC song.”
My friend enjoyed the show, warts and all. Thanks, TO, you’re the best!

Buick 6 was way to heavy handed, and I miss Doug P. We were right up front and the sound was great, best I’ve heard her voice. We got the set list from the stage, here it is as it was written, but as noted, many songs were not played from this list. The last song on the list is Long Way. She didn’t play I Lost It and Concrete & Barbed Wire (which bums me out since I’ve never heard that live).
Motherless Children

Happy Women Blues
Crescent City
Big Red Sun Blues
Sweet Old World/Memphis Pearl

Joy/Long WayOctober 9, 2009 at 12:47 am #40921Disco StuParticipantNever heard Lu do a song called Hard Road. Can someone advise? Is this new?
I can’t say for certain that the song was performed last night, but Hard Road is track nine on Happy Woman Blues. I had to look it up, because I always thought the song was called Bill.

It wasn’t the closer in Greensboro, Tom, but I know it usually is.
So then the question becomes, what was the closer on the setlist in Providence?
Tom
Agreeance Long Way usually the closer; but it seemed she skipped some songs in between.
BUT STILL AGREAT SHOW!!! GLAD I WENT….
October 9, 2009 at 3:46 pm #40923NelsonParticipantNope – Hard Road wasn’t played – my mistake. the lyrics were jumping around my head for some reason (too much beer?)
October 9, 2009 at 4:11 pm #40924stogerParticipantWell darn–after Disco Stu rightly called me out on a song title I should have known (since I’ve listened to Happy Woman Blues a lot lately), we find out it wasn’t played after all. I guess the same is true of “Six Blocks Away.” Still, it’s nice to note that “Those 3 Days” was seemingly done in NY?
October 10, 2009 at 1:14 pm #40925elizabethParticipantWe bought our tickets early, thrilled that Lucinda would be in a town near us, ‘cuz it was a week/worknight.Have been strong fans for about 10 years. Excellent seats by the stage. Got there at a few minutes past 8, asked “um, where is she?” and was told the bus was here. Waited for another hour and half(9:30) for her show that was listed on the ticket at 8, wishin we’d stopped for supper instead of boltin’ a sandwich…bought a t-shirt, checked out the venue, and crowd, settled in. We were tired but happy and excited to be there…
The intro at 8 by the band was wonderful. Don’t usually like long instrumentals (even old Led Zeppelin)but they were inspired and brought us to some unusual places. What a band. Finally, finally Lucinda wandered out, barely acknowleding the crowd except to growl”About f-time, eh?” and started up, peering at lyrics, and looking sorta dazed and confused. Some guy who came out and ministered to her after almost every song, was beginning to annoy me. Was this the new hubby? Why was he so in her face? What was her problem? Finally with some of her older materials she stepped away from the lyrics and began to rock. We were now truly enjoying the show-the band, her voice, the “sweet sad songs” and feisty ones (“I’m so over you, You don’t even have a clue..”) when suddenly she lashed out at a couple in the audience who got up to leave in the middle of the set. WTF? Who knows why they got up, maybe some sort of medical or personal emergency, maybe not…but who cares? It’s not her place to give an udience who waited till 9:30 a hard time. Her harsh response was totally out of line. An apology would have been more than appropriate, before or after the outburst, for whatever was making her so sullen and indifferent. This after all is her audience, her fan base, bread and butter. Maybe she was sick, maybe hungover, maybe blue…but it was shocking and sad too. I couldn’t help contrast this seeming passive AND agressive hostility to the L Cohen concert we attended at the Wang where L gave all sort of respect & thanks to his audience, over and over, verbally, non-verbally. After that concert we left on cloud nine. This one made the t-shirt “You took my joy, I want it back” kind of prophetic and symbolic. Lucinda-get a grip-lose the attitude- 😐 we don’t HAVE to pay to come see you. : (October 10, 2009 at 6:09 pm #40926DavidinMaineParticipantNow that the cheering has subsided, other opinions and observations are beginning to surface. And the set-lists seem to mirror the last three or so years minus the occasional gem or two… Funny, no special guest musicians to speak of in terms of the “30th Anniversary Tour.” I don’t think I would use the term “epic shows” for this run…

Is this a joke? Seriously? You have been complaing on this forum about the lack of early career songs. You touted the 30/30/30 David Byrne model. Now Lucinda plays two or three songs from every one of her albums dating back to 1979, and you still complain? Her setlists are indeed different than they’ve been in the last three years.
And for the record, the complaints about this and the previous show seem to me to be more about Lu’s attitutude (i.e. couple leaving mid song) and the band being too loud, but I don’t recall anyone but you complaining about her song selection.

What was that last night at Lupos?? I’ve been to numerous shows but last nights was a total waste of time and money. She clearly was on something because she could not even remember the words to the songs and read all night from the paper lying next to her. I can handle swearing but insulting people who paid $50 for a ticket is just rude. I will think twice about going to another one of her concerts sorry to say.
No complaining here. Just people talkin’. Take a look at the set-list portion of this webpage and scroll through the ones from ’07, ’08. Not much different really. Yeah, the “30th Anniversary” shows have a few new additions, there’s really nothing that much different except a guitar player with a rock and roll bend (played with Bowie, Iggy, etc) versus an Americana lean (Bo Ramsey, Charlie Sexton, Doug Pettibone, Gurf Morlix, Kenny Vaughn, etc). No need to get up on your hind legs and howl, really. There are reasons for these different opinions… David Byrne played almost the exact same set every night during his last tour (Songs of Eno and Bynre). No complaints–that’s just the way that celebratory tour was (a 30th anniversary tour by the way). However, there was nobody saying that the sets were different either. I am not seeing much difference in LWs sets these days and the sets-lists seem to speak for themselves (For example, Honey Bee every night in such a long run, etc).
October 10, 2009 at 7:43 pm #40929RainydaymanParticipantTo each his own David, but the set lists are in fact very different. There’s no need for the “hind leg” reference. I don’t recall insulting you.
October 10, 2009 at 7:54 pm #40930DavidinMaineParticipantCool runnings, Rainy and no worries. I am not seeing that much difference save a few newbie songs now and again. Same Buick 6 (opening/backing) and same vein of delivery. And this is by no means meant to be a blanket statement. I am just not seeing anything all that different. Like when she toured behind CWOGR with Kenny Vaughn and Jim Lauderdale or when she started her Essence tour with Charlie Sexton, Bo Ramsey, Doug Pettibone. Now, that’s changing the batting order up. I simply am saying it’s not that different and I think the proof is in the set lists and players…

I’ll concede the point about the band, as well as staying out of the debate about the Providence show except to say that based on her comments, she was pretty obviously in a bad mood that night – how that affected the quality of the songs is something I can’t judge. However, I would argue that the last couple years have seen quite a bit more of a setlist shake-up than “a few newbie songs now and again.” Off the top of my head, some of the rarer songs she’s played include I Just Wanted To See You So Bad, The Night’s Too Long, Sweet Old World, and pretty much everything she’s been playing from the Happy Woman Blues album. Up until recently, how long had it been since she’d played Happy Woman Blues, or Lafayette, or especially Sharp Cutting Wings? I’d wager it’s been decades since the latter.
I agree that a few songs have become almost constant in the setlist, such as Honey Bee. I don’t think it’s unusual for an artist to have a few songs that show up just about every night for a couple years; furthermore, even if I disliked Honey Bee (actually, I get a kick out of seeing it live, though the album version does less for me), from this fan’s perspective the inclusion of some real rarities and old gems more than makes up for it.
October 12, 2009 at 3:36 pm #40932RainydaymanParticipantThe point I was trying to make with David is that the setlists today on the 30th Anniversary Tour are very different than they were “two or three years ago.” As I recall the setlists in 2007 typically had maybe one song from before Car Wheels, two if she played “Changed The Locks.” Now her setlists include at least 8 songs from pre Car Wheels. That’s a huge difference.
I was not addressing the issue of changing them from night to night, although I think Lu does a pretty good job of mixing them up especially when she plays multiple nights in the same city.
