For this tour, Mellencamp is joined by longtime critical and cult favorite Lucinda Williams. The accomplished songwriter first caught the ear of music fans with the rootsy mix of blues, folk, and country traditions found on ‘Happy Woman Blues’ from 1980. It took notorious perfectionist Williams a full eight years to record a follow up, but the classic songs of heartache from her self-titled second album got her wider recognition; Mary Chapin Carpenter and Tom Petty later covered tunes from the recording. Williams’ audience continued to grow without the artist watering down her signature sound and intense emotional delivery.
‘Car Wheels on a Gravel Road’ in 1998 garnered her greatest acclaim yet, winning wide praise and a Grammy for “Best Contemporary Folk Album.” Apparently, wider recognition is encouraging Williams to work faster: she produced her last three recordings including her latest ‘Little Honey’ in only six years to release compared to the 12 years required to finish her first three albums.
