I agree with you about the demo versions. Of course those were done with her great band at the time. Doug, Taras & Jimmy.

February 22, 2007 at 4:34 am #32274aloyisusParticipantright off the bat, let me say i really enjoyed the whole cd! i enjoyed what i found to be a nice progression, a flow, to the songs. other than ‘car wheels'(which will never be equalled), i think ‘west’ stands up with any other lu release.
while i don’t find any one song that stands out above the rest much, i found each song has it’s charms. ‘fancy funeral’ and ‘unsuffer me’ are early favs.
there’s been some discussion that ‘wrap my head around that’ doesn’t measure up. it’s different, but i like it as well. i imagine that tune will rock live! performers do craft songs for that purpose, after all…especially a songwriter as gifted as lucinda.
if i had to pick one song from the record, it would be the closer, ‘west’. it’s a beautiful number, and closes out a great album perfectly!
after listening to the cd a number of times during the day, i must say i’m looking forward even more to seeing lu at radio city in ny on march 23rd!!February 23, 2007 at 2:41 pm #32275HuguesParticipantShiiiiit! I had written a review here and it disappeared in the cyberspace!
This forum technically sucks!
So, I sum it up: this album is a masterpiece!
West goes to your blood. Lu never sounded so focused, the sound is perfect to support her voice and music. Here, more than ever, she holds you tight in her arms, it’s the comfort zone, Heaven.
Great, great record. Think of it like an improvement over Essence, the same flow qualities from start to finish, but more rich again, and more beautiful.

… Anyway, having a good idea of what the album was going to sound like I approached it cautiously, hoping it wouldn’t be the biggest disappointment since Dylan’s Modern Times.
Wow- I thought Modern Times was the best thing Dylan has released in a long time! You might want to pull that one back out and give it a fresh listen Stu, its full of tasty nuggets!

Are You Alright, Learning How To Live, and Everything Has Changed from the start, since they’re in Lucinda’s usual style. I think the interplay between the violin and the overdriven guitar on Unsuffer me is cool. Some people have commented that What If seems silly or something to that effect, but I like it when a songwriter puts in something a little quirky, different than how I would phrase it. I think that some off the lyrics are whimsical, but are followed by some that are pretty serious(if prisoners were freed, if we loved one another in equal amounts)April 5, 2007 at 2:56 am #32278JonSParticipantI have listened to West almost every day for the last month. My father has been very sick and just passed away, and the album has been very comforting for me. I will be returning to the Twin Cites tomorrow after weeks in PHX. Wish I could go to the show in Mpls, but after an extended absence from work I don’t know how well that would go over.
April 10, 2007 at 3:55 pm #32279GemParticipanti think west is definitely very different to the other albums, and it took me a good while to get into it! there are still a few songs on there that i really dont like (in ‘come on’ she sounds like alice cooper doing ‘poison’) but there are some real gems in West, like ‘fancy funeral’, ‘mama you sweet’ and ‘wrap my head around that’.. all in all, lucinda can do no wrong, i just wish the final song selection was a little different! its great, but its no Essence.
xx

THANK YOU!!!
I knew there was a song that Come On reminded me of and you nailed it!
I’ve fallen in love with Everything Has Changed. Unfortunately some of the songs I loved when I first got the album have already faded for me. Are You Alright gets so boring midway through I always end up skipping the second half.
