Good news – there’s a dvd coming out towrds the end of the month!

    From http://www.pattygriffin.com/welcome.php

PATTY GRIFFIN: LIVE FROM THE ARTISTS DEN DVD
On October 30, 2007, ATO Records and Artists Den Entertainment will release the DVD, Patty Griffin: Live from the Artists Den, filmed at an invitation-only concert on February 6, 2007, the day her latest album, Children Running Through, was released. The exclusive concert took place at the Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts, a converted synagogue on New York’s Lower East Side. The DVD will include 14 songs, shot in HD and mixed in both stereo and 5.1 audio.

February 6 was a bitterly cold winter day in New York City that turned into an even colder night, with temperatures dropping to nine degrees Fahrenheit as devoted fans huddled together outside the Orensanz Foundation for a chance to see Griffin perform songs from the new album for the first time. Inside, the historic building’s neo-gothic arches were lit with the warm glow of candlelight as Griffin stepped into the packed room to play a private Artists Den concert, celebrating the record’s release and offering a sneak preview of her extensive spring and summer tours.

Griffin’s crystal-clear voice filled the room with newly penned songs (a handwritten lyrics sheet sat perched on the piano when she took a break from her guitar to play it) as well as Griffin classics, accompanied by new band members and longtime players alike. A special treat on some songs was the addition of legendary keyboardist Ian McLagan (Small Faces, The Rolling Stones) – who appeared for this night only – and a five-piece string section. At the end of the evening, the enchanted audience walked back out into the biting cold braced with the warmth of an unforgettable night.

That next week, Children Running Through went on to garner Griffin her biggest first-sales week of her career, bowing with 26,834 pieces and the #34 spot on the “Billboard” Top 200 chart, nearly doubling her previous best.

The media reaction to the record was stellar from the beginning and the press continues to be full of accolades across the globe. The “Late Show with David Letterman” had Griffin as a guest during release week while National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” aired a feature the week before. “Entertainment Weekly” gave the record an A-, the second lead slot and the pick of the week, hailing: “Children Running Through is the showcase of a confident singer successfully diversifying…an elegant melodist who conjures complex emotions with small strokes…Griffin’s pure voice never misses.” “Rolling Stone” gave the record 3-1/2 stars, while “USA Today” also gave it 3-1/2 stars, calling Griffin a “singer’s singer” and said, “when she opens her mouth, everything else falls away.” The “Washington Post” exclaimed that Griffin is “at the height of her powers,” while “Billboard” cheered, “Patty Griffin’s release has it all…This dynamic collection has something unexpected at every turn, with each flip of Griffin’s voice or hopeful flourish of strings revealing something new about this veteran jewel.” “Paste” gave the record four stars and said, “like another transcendent, intuitive singer — Van Morrison, in whose company she belongs — it’s the way she sings that defines her greatness.” In “No Depression’s” highlighted review, editor Grant Alden hails: “Every other record she has made – and most of them are quite good – seems to have been a preamble to this work, by leaps and bounds the best of her career…if somebody makes a better record in 2007, it will have been a spectacular year.”

With her heartfelt, insightful songs and singular voice, Griffin has won a fiercely loyal fan base. Originally from Maine, and now a resident of Austin, Texas, Griffin has also had a tremendous influence across all genres of music. Among the many artists who’ve recorded her songs are the Dixie Chicks, Bette Midler, and Emmylou Harris. Children Running Through, her most successful album to date, continues the remarkable creative evolution that’s quietly established Patty Griffin as a vital and original force.

The Artists Den presents both emerging and established musicians in unique settings around the world. Some of the notable musicians who have performed in Artists Den concerts include KT Tunstall, Crowded House, Fountains of Wayne, Regina Spektor, Ben Kweller, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. A movable feast, Artists Den concerts take place in such unconventional venues as an abandoned warehouse in San Francisco, Christie’s auction house in London, the Masonic Hall Grand Lodge of New York, and the diamond floor of Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue. In January 2008, the Live from the Artists Den series will debut on the Ovation TV network.

This is the first full-length DVD offering from Patty Griffin, and the second joint release from Artists Den Entertainment and ATO Records.

Patty’s album Downtown Church won’t be released until Jan 26 but it’s being streamed in full here on the NPR website. The semi-gospel record was produced by Buddy Miller and features artists such as Emmylou, Regina and Ann McCrary, Shawn Colvin, Jim Lauderdale, along with Buddy and Julie Miller.

As I mentioned in previous thread, I’ve been watching American Idol (which I typically dont follow), rooting for Crystal Bowersox. Last night, she sang “Up To The Mountain.” A compelling performance.

Patty is playing The Ryman in June. The new album is great. Her voice is very haunting in that building.
I wish she would do another Flaming Red type of album-it is still my favorite. Musclover

    Thanks, LWj!
    Looking forward to that one.

Also, Patty has been playing and singing with Robert Plant on his Band of Joy album and tour.

Plus, Patty should have an album of originals out early next year. Can’t wait for that.

I received Patty Griffin’s new Album, American Kid, today, a day before release day (thanks, Amazon.com!). This album is incredible, brilliant, unbelievable. Words do not do it justice. Get it. NOW. You will be missing out on an easy, probable contender for “Americana Album of the Year” if you don’t…
