ParticipantO.K., this will be a quickie since I am supposed to be working. I must be living right, because twice this week I walked into the venue as the headliner took the stage (Monday was Wilco). Literally, I was paying for my ticket when Lucinda addressed the crowd and said “Hello” or whatever she said.
It was a little less crowded than I expected, but this was my first time to the Diamond Ballroom. It was a little nicer than I expected and one of the guys that works there told me it is nicer than just a few years ago. Not as nice as the Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, but this was only 15 miles from my house.
I met people from Tulsa, saw car plates from Texas and suspect there were other travelers, too.
The first couple songs didn’t seem to be going to well. Lucinda kept huddling up Buick 6 between each song. I thought she was pissed about the stage monitors or something else. Not much smiling (from my vantage point) or talking. Is it too hot and she (Lu) needs a Cedar Falls fan?!? Anyway, after 3-4-5 songs everything seemed to have worked themselves out and the show flowed well. Everyone was picking up steam and jamming by the time Well, Well, Well came around.
Allergies seemed to have been the problem early on in the set. Lucinda was eating / drinking some thick concoction for her voice / throat.
I talked with Dave _____ (the bass player) and Troy (?) the soundman after the show. They were both very friendly. Dave got me autographs after the show. THANKS DAVE!!! They were both excited about going to Europe and all the places they were going to play. Dave said they were going to play several gigs in Spain and that was going to be exciting. I kinda apologized to Troy that they were ending their U.S. tour in a bit of a dive, but he said it didn’t matter what place it was, IT WAS THE PEOPLE WHO MATTER. I’ll have to agree!
This was my fifth time to see Lucinda since 2003. The last time in Tulsa (April 2007?) there were friends and family members in the audience and parts of the setlist got shot to hell. That’s O.K. That is what I was wondering last night. Was there a setlist planned, but Lucinda had scrapped it and going by the seat of her pants. Oh, I about forgot about the house light incident. At the end of the main set and going into the encore break the house lights got turnedn ON for a few minutes and in that time some people bolted. By this time, I had already wandered to the soundboard. A BIG ol’ fella hustled over to the house soundman and asked forcefully, but still a little polite, “Who turned on the lights?!?” He was pissed. I wouldn’t been able to ask that with profanity. The house soundman quickly deflected the BIG ol’ fella and pointed to one of the bar areas. I thought to myself, “I’m glad I didn’t flip that f@*kin’ switch on.” I guess everything worked out. Hopefully, no fingers got broken over that deal.
Sorry about the questions marks below. I got lost “in time” at a couple points due to the music. PLUS, there were a couple-three gay girls having a fight (no fists), but they were pissed at each other. I had never seen a girl so mad at someone a a guy wasn’t involved … OH, maybe there was a guy involved, just not right there and right then. Anyway, I was keeping an eye on them in case I had to make am quick scramble out of the way.
This was my FIRST Riders On The Storm. I thought it was odd, but there was no break between Joy->RidersOTS and Righteously. The three songs were kinda like one song. I don’t know if that is how it is always done. Perhaps some can fill in the gaps below in the setlist.
My favorites turned out to be If Wishes Were Horses, Greenville, Essence, RidersOTS, Honey Bee and of course, Come On & Unsuffer Me. Wait, I think I heard Are You Alright?, but I can’t remember. Go figure. I wish the band good luck and a good time in Europe and Australia.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
