Short show due to RCMH hard curfew at 11:

    Rescue
    Ventura
    Fruits of my labor
    Drunken Angel
    Lake Charles
    Fancy Funeral
    Pineola
    Rightseously
    Essence
    Come on
    Unsuffer me
    Joy
    —-
    Evrything is changed
    West
    Where is my love
    Hard Time, Killing Floor

Jenny on violin from Come On through the end. Unlike my feeling about how the violin comes across on the album itself, I thought she complemented the sound nicely live.

Great sound, at least from down in the pit. Doug’s guitars, as usual, were brilliant.

A couple got up from the front row sometime early in the set, Lu said something like “I’m trying my best, but there are now 2 seats open in the front row.” The couple was back about a song later.

On about 9:20, off couple minutes past 11.

    $8 Heineken’s hurt.

Thanks for the setlist. I wonder if Jenny will be with the band in Boston tonight.

I did not care for Jenny. I miss the Love Band. Doug’s guitar was too low in the mix. “Joy” was bad. It just didn’t rock out. I missed Taras’ bass line in “Essence” The set list was not mixed up enough. Too many slow tempo songs in a row. “Drunken Angel” into “Pineola” for example. “Rescue” is a great opener, but I would not have followed it with “Ventura” I would have rather not had a warm up band and have Lu play more. Her set seemed short. (I am tired of this damn so called NY curfew Lu mentions every time she plays NY.) The sound in Radio City was great though…

Good show. Thought the guitar was perfect complement to whatever tune Lucinda was doing. It was pure and ethereal….. complementary on austere songs as the opener, Ventura, or West (which was done beautifully), to a great blues lead “Where is My Love”. Unsuffer Me was spill your heart out, wounded, wailing ala Springsteen doing ‘NYC Serenade circa’ 74′ at Avery Fisher

I had a good time. Was it great? No, but it provided me enough highlights for me in what is the “classiest” coolest visually beatuiful venues one will ever find. A very good show in this writer’s eyes.

Listen. There could’ve been far worse fucking places for you to be last evening (i.e. MSG with Aguelera & the Pussycats or Byrne Arena for Timberlake) . Think about that…. 😀

unfortunately the curfew is all too real and forced upon the venues by the unions we see it all the time and it blows

just getting a chance to check in re friday’s show at radio city.
good show, too short for me but i’m convinced the ny crowd that
attends a lucinda williams show is not looking for her to play
2.5 hrs. also, let’s clear up something about the *curfew* she
almost invariably mentions when she’s in ny. there is no curfew.
after 11 the union rates go up. you sold out one of the larger
venues for one of the higher profile shows you’ve ever scheduled,
you want to play longer, fork over the cash to the stage hands,
electricians, carpenters, whoever’s working the hall that night.
that, or get your ass on stage ealier. don’t give me that horse
hooey about a curfew, that’s so disingenious. if there was a curfew,
how are the allman’s able to play long after she’s in bed 20
blocks north on broadway with the same union guys? curfew my ass.

length of the show aside, she is still able to astound me with
her sheer presence. i can’t articulate what it is, but she’s got
it in spades. rescue to open was jaw dropping. at quick count i’ve
seen 9 shows at radio city but never seen any *quiet* music.
between the pristine sound and the unbelievable acoustics at radio
city, that opener is something i’ll never forget. after the notes
fron pettibone’s sparse picking faded, they were gone, not an echo
to be heard. everything’s changed, west, lake charles were just
beautiful. while i would usually agree with the previous *too
many slow songs* assesment, radio city was the place to play the
slow/quiet tunes. and on a final note, this was my first go with
the new rhythm section. for me, the bass player was just there,
nothing to take note of but not horrible. but the drummer was, uh,
less than adequate. pace and pitch were way off on a couple
of songs. i know it’s pointless to whine about the missing love
band but i really miss taras and jim after fridays show. oh well.

i completely agree that the openning number was jaw-dropping. the sound was so incredible even lucinda was moved to say it after the song ended. i think she used the word ‘spectacular’, if memory serves me.
maybe the set list could have been arranged differently, but i thought it was a great show. lucinda’s voice sounded fantastic, and she acted very into it all night. doug’s playing was brilliant as usual(he’s become one of my favorite all-around guitarist). the bass & drums might not have been up there with the love band, but they were fine. i found the electric fiddle a nice touch.
the over-riding thing i take away from the show was the amazing sound of the hall. i feel that if lucinda has her say, her returning visits to nyc will be at radio city.
one minor sour note for me…the tour tee shirt is a pretty uninsired one. if they were just gonna copy the ‘west’ cover, for $30 couldn’t they have at least added lucinda’s picture?! but here i sit, wearing it all the same!!

The concert at Radio City was exquisite. The sound was crystal clear, and highlighted Lucinda’s ragged touched by an angel ravaged by Lucifer voice. I’ve never been to Radio City before, this is how Lucinda’s voice is meant to be heard, it was a reverent and gorgeous marriage of venue and artist. The audience was raptly attentive, as if we were at an opera or a play. No one wanted to miss the poetry of her lyrics or the nuances of her voice. A master at the height of her creative powers. (And Doug Pettibone was amazing too.) Lucinda said she was honored to be there, that it had taken her 30 years to get from playing the streets of New York to Radio City Music Hall.
It was something old and something new- songs like “Drunken Angel,” “Lake Charles” shared the stage with songs from WEST including “Rescue,” “Unsuffer Me”.
And something borrowed; the haunting final encore was “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues.”
Lucinda said that she wanted to honor the mucisians that inspired her and how relevant the lyrics of “Hard Time…” are today.
    And it was beautifully blue.

I just do not get that she still does crap like that. It’s so incredibly unprofessional, and whiny to boot. You’re 54 Lu; get over it. 😕
