1 Motherless Children
2 Stop Breakin’ Down
3 Disgusted [with a late arriving rhythm section]
4 Ramblin’ on My Mind [sans a hastily departing rhythm section]
5 Jambalya [with much talk about the Jackson, MS civil rights lawyer and one of his clients who encouraged her first record, further talk about another Folkways label musician]
6 Lafayette [abandoned after the third false start]
6a Happy Woman Blues [before which Lu bemoans not being able to park the tour buses right outside the venue–“You know Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings wouldn’t play here for ten years because of that”–also, the crew scrambles to activate the on-stage electric fan per Lu’s demand]
7 Sharp Cutting Wings [preceded by “I suck”]
8 Howlin’ at Midnight [with Chet on banjo: Lu apologizes that tonight is so “loose”]
[there follows a long interlude in which Lu does not play “One Night Stand”–I’m later told it’s because there are no lyrics for it in THE BOOK–but instead tells a story about the porn film “American Girls in Heat Part II” which ripped off the song and used it, thanks to her having signed over rights on this album to a devious music industry guy: she’s tried and tried to locate a print of the film, but. . .]
9 Passionate Kisses
10 Side of the Road
11 The Night’s Too Long
[long interlude here wherein Lu reflects on the MC Carpenters and P Lovelesses of the world, as opposed to the generalized fickleness of the Nashville country music industry]
12 Big Red Sun Blues
13 I Just Wanted to See You So Bad
14 Crescent City
15 Factory Blues [technically off format of tonight’s set, but Lu and band nail it, with a nod to Joanne Kelly and to the Groundhogs for turning her onto it years ago: no one is sure who wrote it, and Lu challenges the audience to research that]
16 Changed the Locks{15 or so minute interlude}
17 Nothing in Ramblin’
18 Can’t Let Go
19 Metal Firecracker
20 Are You Down
21 Bus to Baton Rouge
22 Ventura [slight false start, but Lu is laughing off such things by this point]
23 Little Rock Star
24 I Live My Life
25 Honeybee
26 Joy[typical time lapse before encore]
27 Sundays [per earlier shout-out/oh my god/she even sings her own background vocals in a different key, a la the bonus track on self-titled record]
28 It’s a Long Way to the TopSo should I divvy up the research duties and assign half the Forum regulars to research “Factory Blues” composition, half to ferret (as opposed to fetter) out the obscure 80’s porn film? Naw, I’m sure Tom Tracy’s on both cases by now. Please embellish people: I’ll leave my report right there. A night to remember. . .
October 4, 2009 at 2:33 pm #40849LafayetteParticipantApparently, I logged in, via hotel lobby (I’m in St. Louis for Farm Aid show today), at just the right time! No special guests stopped in? I hope Lu doesn’t cross “Lafayette” off the setlist if she ended up abandoning it last night.
Thanks for the report, stoger, and looking forward to additional color commentary on the night’s events.
I had already tried finding information on “Factory Blues” from the last show when she covered it. I think TNT and I are from the same mold 🙂 I wasn’t sure, without hearing lyrics, if I was on the right track. My initial findings had “Steppenwolf” covering this???
To all in NYC, have fun and keep us posted!

Uuuaaauuuu!!!! Great and large set-list!!!!! 😀 😮 😀
October 4, 2009 at 2:55 pm #40838tntracyParticipantI already tried finding who wrote “Factory Blues”, stoger, when the subject came up last week here on the forums, but to no avail…
Thanks for the set list. Yes, it was an exceptional show last night. Lu’s voice was spot-on, with her singing about as best as I have ever heard. And, the band was tight, the acoustics good, the venue very nice. A wonderful evening; I am looking forward to the next two nights!
More impressions, etc. later – “the missus” & I are headed out to “see the sights” – I don’t want to spend too much time in the hotel room while we are here! 😉

October 4, 2009 at 2:55 pm #40839paul_from_losangelesParticipantThank you, stoger, for the setlist. You obviously awoke much earlier than either Tom Tracy or myself. Of course, I first needed to survive the Sunday crush for breakfast at Embassy Suites.
I can mention that Susannah had 2 new T-shirts for their first sales appearance last night. The shirts are black, with a photo or drawing of Lucinda, related to the early albums.
The venue was very crowded, but not sold-out, and there were signs offering to sell tickets at no extra fee for the next 2 nights. The audience seemed very mellow, except for one sad soul, who repeatedly shouted for “Blue”, obviously one night early.
It looks like a beautiful day to walk around Manhattan–so I’ll bid adiou for now. And, Dr. Stoger, I will not be searching the porno shops for the rip-off of “One Night Stand”.

I have ordered two t-shirts via TNT during today!!! By the way, it sounds cool searching porno shops in a touristic round around Manhattan! 😆
October 4, 2009 at 4:25 pm #40841Disco StuParticipantThanks for the detailed report, stoger. I’m so jealous of you guys. Sundays!?! I hope that’s not just a one-off.
I wouldn’t be disappointed at all to get this exact setlist in Chicago. 🙂

October 4, 2009 at 5:44 pm #40843Hot_BloodedParticipantPardon me my ignorance, but what trend of albums do the shows exactly follow?
It would seem to me based on last night’s set list that the next two albums to be drawn from primarily – for tonight’s show, which happens to be the only one I can make – are “Sweet Old World” and “Car Wheels,” and possibly “Essence” too if it’s in threes and not twos.
If anyone could enlighten me I would appreciate it.
October 4, 2009 at 7:05 pm #40844tonygKeymasterGreat reports. Everyone have fun today.

For NYC & Chicago (the two locales for the 3-night stands), the format is as follows:
Night 1, Set 1 – Selections from Ramblin’, Happy Woman Blues & Lucinda Williams
Night 2, Set 1 – Selections from Sweet Old World, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road & Essence
Night 3, Set 1 – Selections from World Without Tears, West & Little HoneyEach Night, Set 2 – Various selections from Lu’s entire catalog & “who knows?” 😉

October 5, 2009 at 6:36 am #40846Hot_BloodedParticipantthanks Tom!
Tonight’s show was great. She is a rare one. It was great to hear some favorites for the first time, especially the non-Pineola SOW tracks.

Not to mention “Come To Me Baby”… 😉

October 7, 2009 at 2:18 pm #40848tntracyParticipantI took only two pictures all three nights, and they were on the first night. Here they are:

P.S. There is one of Sarah that I took that is priceless. She will kill me, but oh well, here goes…
