Davey F. is bassist Davey Faragher from Elvis Costello’s backing band the Impostor’s –it’s up there in my original post.

Well let me see if I can help fill in the blanks to LWJ’s post above -and I do have to give you credit for some very perceptive sleuthing. We aren’t sure how we’re going to split the songs up but it very well could be close to what you have above.
The recordings with Bill Frisell were done with Greg Leisz, David Sutton & Butch Norton and I believe there are 14 tracks done with this group. The last night of that weeks session substituted Santa Davis on drums and included Ras Michael on jamaican hand drums.
There are two tracks recorded with the legendary Tony Joe White on guitar (and harmonica on one song) the band on those tracks are Pete Thomas on drums (from Elvis Costello’s bands -the current Impostors and the original Attractions-and Jack Shit), Sebastian Steinberg on bass (from Soul Coughing) and Greg Leisz.
Recorded that same week four more songs with Greg Leisz and Pete Thomas and Val McCallum (Jackson Browne and Jack Shit) on guitar and Bob Glaub on bass on two songs (check out the amazing records he has played on) and this will answer your question from above, Davey Faragher on bass for two songs (from Elvis Costello’s Impostors and Jack Shit).
This week we have been recording with Ian “call me Mac” McLagan (The Faces -and Small Faces, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart etc) Stuart Mathis (Wallflowers & Lu’s current touring guitarist) and Greg L, Pete T, and Davey F. We have one more night of recording with this line up tonight and it looks like we will end up with 8 or 9 more songs.
I am always hesitant to gush about recordings here in the forum for several reasons: 1) what else would I say? 2) don’t want to over hype 3) we still have a ways to go with mixing etc so the release is still a ways away -shooting to hit early April for the first record.
I can say this -this is the fourth record i’ve been involved with with Lu and none of the other recording sessions have been like these. There has been an incredible energy and spirit and everyone involved truly believes they are working on something very special. I can also add that we are making this record in a way that nobody does anymore. It is being done almost completely live in the studio- each song is done over live in it’s entirety until we get the magic take. Lu has become obsessed with being able to say that each song was recorded live meaning that what you hear on the record will be intact as it was recorded. She has given to the fact that she want’s some backing vocals on some songs, but those will most likely be 90% of any overdubs. What that has created is a massive amount recording -we have multiple versions of every song as it is being worked on -in some cases very different versions of the same song, we have long versions (one 19 minute song that is so beyond description we aren’t sure what we’re going to do with it), we have solo versions etc and a couple songs have been done with both of the different groups. We have everything -the range of songs is incredible-as a whole it would be a pretty amazing artistic statement.
Ok -there is the update i’ve been meaning to post for the last few weeks – I’ve probably said more a lot than I intended but I’ll blame it on the adrenaline of this past week -and month.
I will say one more thing.
We still aren’t quite done yet -we have about four more songs to record after today. So much for that recording budget.Wow, getting Ian MacLagan out of Austin alone must be deemed a top accomplishment. Should you want to grace us more with detail, Tom, a certain matching of song titles with band personnel would not come amiss. But this is a fine post in and of itself. Thirty Tigers might be more amenable to 19-minute songs than Lost Highway, no?
December 4, 2013 at 2:33 pm #50107LaurelParticipantHello – I saw Lucinda last summer and she had some beautiful new songs in her repertoire. However, I see that her album coming out in January is a re-release. When will the new songs be recorded? I am really looking forward to them. Is there anywhere I can purchase them? Thank you very much!
December 4, 2013 at 3:29 pm #50108tonygKeymasterWelcome to the forum Laurel. Tom gave us a description of her new recordings earlier in this thread. I don’t believe a release date has been reported.
Tell us more about when you saw Lucinda and how the show was.
December 4, 2013 at 3:38 pm #50109LaurelParticipantI saw the band in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain, in June. It was a relatively small space compared to where I had seen her before (outdoor concert venue and Radio City Music Hall). Loved it! We went for tapas around the gorgeous old city and then wandered in and heard a rich, interesting show. Ended the evening with late night drinks gallego style. We were too revved up to go straight to bed. Viva Lucinda! I wish I could find a place to purchase those new songs she sang – her voice with the lyrics was gorgeous. I hope those songs travel with her and don’t stay with the old recording label.
December 4, 2013 at 4:00 pm #50110tonygKeymasterGreat report. I think our resident gadabout, Stoger, was also at that show. Sounds like it was a fun night.
December 4, 2013 at 10:41 pm #50111TOverbyParticipantWe are trying to make early April for the release of the new record but that is far from a sure thing -just a goal. With so much recorded we have many decisions to make in regards of how to release it–to say nothing about all of the mixing etc.
Laurel– Yes the new songs you heard are being recorded and most of them, if not all of them, will appear on a new recording.
Stoger–Can’t really put out song titles yet- many of them only have working titles right now so just not ready to list them yet.
December 5, 2013 at 1:38 am #50112TOverbyParticipantI spoke too soon–just got the production schedule and I was deluded in hoping for April -that’s not gonna happen.
December 6, 2013 at 8:35 pm #50113AnonymousInactiveWhat about May then? I’ll spend a week in Ireland in the end of May with some friends and when we’ve been there in 2011 “Blessed” has been a perfect company while having Irish breakfast and terrible headache on the River Shannon 8) !

Tom O, Lu and the production team:
Try your best to get it on the record store shelves by Sep.30,2014 being the assumed deadline for Grammy nominations.lwj

November 12, 2014 at 10:02 pm #50118DreamingManParticipantI usually go for the immediate gratification of setlist, but today I read the long, interesting posts by Tom posted quite a long time ago. I’ve been checked out of the Lu scene since her last trip through Tulsa and I’ve been getting some songs shot out of the CD shuffle from Blessed, so I am checking back into Lu.
I am about to order the 3 LP DWTSMTB set. Very, very excited about it. See what my mind remembers about Magnolia.
So, (The process of) West was recorded backwards?!? Fascinating! 😮 It is so damn good that it is hard to believe it could have been any other way. Then again, I should have known b/c of the alt versions of CWOGR & SOW. There probably one or two alt versions of every one of Lu’s albums. Would love me some alt Essence ❗ ❗ ❗
Gotto go order an album … actually see if my record store will have it, then I can pick up the new Wilco (2 or 3)LP that has … of all things live and alt versions. The more things change the more they stay the same.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world!
