Good info Tom. Bummer about the new record. I guess no one will be staying over in the guest bedroom. 😉

Its a lot to ask Tom but every time you read of Lucinda working on a new record there are always reportedly lots of songs that never make the record she is working on . I did read of at least 30 songs written for West hence Little Honey came fairly soon after but is there enough fan base or recordings to warrant similar releases such as Dylan’s Bootleg Series which highlight lost songs.

Good question. She has some things that at some point we would release as archive recordings but it’s not as extensive as what Bob is doing. He has had the luxury of recording as much as he wants whenever he wants and as a result he seems to have an endless wealth of archives. It seems almost staggering how much he has -I personally have (or had as I can’t seem to find them) three bootleg 4 cd sets of which I recall have very little of what he has released so far. I have also been told that there might be a project coming where is going to give some unreleased and apparently in some cases unfnished songs to other artists to finish. But that was a year ago and the person who told me is of somewhat dubious credibility.
Anyway in regards to Lucinda -the way she works is that there are a lot of songs that are always in progress so to speak and many of them stay unrecorded until she feels they are finished. There is at least one song that she is working on now that she has been working on for a long time- and it was recorded on the portable home recorder at the same time as the Kitchen Tapes recordings when she worked on Blessed. The version she is working on now is 100% different than what she working on two years ago. That is just one example. She is definitely working on more things in recent years than she did in the past. In some ways she kind of writes in binges. When she put down the home version of the songs of what became Blessed they all just came pouring out at once -I remember thinking at the time and wondering how anyone could possibly carry all those songs around in her head. It apparently was the same with West -when i met first met her she invited me to come down the studio and here what she had been working on and I’ll never forget it. There 20-25 songs that were recorded with her band at the time- known as the Love Band. Almost all of that ended up on West and Little Honey. In fact on West the vocals from those recordings were kept and different musicians were brought in to record to the original vocals -essentially West was made backwards. On Little Honey the songs that were from those original 20-25 songs were all new vocals and in many cases new arrangements also. I guess you could say that are alternate version of both those albums. Basically there are alternate versions of almost every one of her records. Everyone knows about about the legendary original version of Car Wheels, but there is an alternate version of Essence with just her and Bo Ramsey on guitar, as well as demos from World Without Tears where many of the songs are very different –Bleeding Fingers started out as a ballad. There are also alternate versions of most of the songs on Sweet old World also. I also have hours of cassette tapes-she calls them work tapes that she made from probably 1988-90 or so. The way she used to write was that she would get a portable cassette recorder and just turn it on and record everything she was doing as she was working on the song -there is one where the phone rings in her apt. and she forgot to turn the recorder off so you can hear her end of the conversation with her then mgr. -and then she hangs up and gets back to work. There are hours of these cassettes -she worked on the songs for Essence and West the same way- but they will probably never see the light of day because there are long periods where she’s just humming and strumming etc. On the other hand at times they can be fascinating to listen to -she basically recorded her entire writing process -songs change titles -Sweet Old World started out as It Won’t Be The Same Old World- other songs split into two different songs, a few didn’t make the cut. These tapes hold a majority of the songs that became the Rough Trade record, Sweet Old World and Car Wheels which is pretty amazing now. When she started working on Essence she did the same thing- as well as West.
One of the more interesting recent finds was handwritten lyrics to probably 25 songs that were written between Happy Woman Blues and the Rough Trade record. 90% were never recorded and only a handful of them were played live (early 80’s) and even then only a couple times. I look at these as the “lost songs” they are what would have been the missing record or records. By the time she got a break and got a record deal she was working the Rough Trade songs and just forgot about the other ones. I have given serious thought to just having her record those now -maybe just her solo.
So I guess that’s the long answer to your question -the short answer would be no there are not trillion unreleased complete recordings like Bob D. but there are a lot of really interesting things -and some things still being discovered.

Some would say “dubious” would be an upgrade for me. 😳

A new interview with Lucinda entitled “Get to Know Lucinda Williams”
A couple of highlights then the blog article Buzz. Very exciting news..

buzz: Earlier this year, you left Lost Highway Records. Did you find a new label?
LW: Yes, we’re working with Thirty Tigers based in Nashville. It’s really cool, because Kim Buie, who was my A&R person for years and years, is now with Thirty Tigers. As a matter of fact, she just flew in today and she’s going to come over this afternoon and listen to the new songs, because we’re already starting pre-production for the new album. We’re going into the studio in October and I’ve got about 20 songs ready for that.

buzz: Are you using all 20 for the record or will some not make the final cut?
LW: We’re actually talking about doing two separate albums. We’re thinking a rock one and a non-rock one with different musicians. We’re thinking we’ll record a bunch of stuff in L.A. in October and we can go to Nashville and cut some stuff there, because there’s a bunch of musicians we want to work with there.

buzz: So you’re planning on using all 20 for the next albums?
LW: Well, there’s always a few of those that don’t make it. It’s always good to have a few extra songs, because then people ask for stuff for like movies or for different artists who are recording and looking for songs to cover.

buzz: So for the new album, is there a title or have you scheduled a release date?
LW: We’re tossing some ideas around (for an album title), but I think it will be ready to go in the early part of the year, like Spring maybe. We’re doing two, so we’re just saying the one is rock and the other one is non-rock, kind of meaning country or whatever. It’s hard to tell which songs are going to be on which, but some are obvious. There’s a couple of the pretty ballads that will obviously be on the non-rock one, but then I’ve got some bluesy-stuff and we don’t really know which way that will go yet.

From the above post two records for release Spring 2014-one rock and one non-rock.

So, if you looked at Lu’s facebook from yesterday you will see a great photo of Lu and Bill Frisell with Greg Leisz on day one in the studio.

Here’s a non-rock Bill Frisell who appeared on WEST covering Lu’s Ventura- a full ten minutes of guitar magic to enjoy.

Wow!!! Thank you VERY much, LWjetta, for this link! In the early 90s I was at a Frisell-Concert in a very small club in Cologne and had absolutely no idea a) of Lu and b) that he would become “my missing link” between Jazz and Country. His “Nashville”-Album was irritating, Lucinda’s work then too, years passed by… WEST was like a… (f*** foreign languages, it’s really hard to express what I mean)… revelation? … approval? … that “there’s a lot of good music out there”! “Ventura”, by the way, is one of my… I just love this song.

According to Butch Norton, it has been an “amazing week” of recording with Bill Frisell, Greg Liez and David Sutton. Eleven tracks in the can, all recorded live. And more to come this coming week.

From Lu’s interview with Buzz posted earlier.

Sure looks like fantastic progress-what a team lineup with Lu.

“Non-Rock” album with reference to her facebook photo from 11/15
David Bianco, David Sutton, Tom Overby, Lu, Bill Frisell (with an unnamed puppy dog), Butch Norton, Greg Leiz, Shilah Morrow (of Sin City Social Club) and Pam Robinson(?)

“Rock” album with reference to her facebook photos from 11/21
Lu, Ian McLagan, Stuart Mathis, Greg Leiz, Pete Thomas and Davey ? anybody’s guess on the Davey reference ?

Anyway, here’s a treat to listen to from SXSW 1995 , you can listen to the whole mp3 concert (takes a little while to load-have patience). Pay particular attention to the keyboard on track # 4 CWOAGR courtesy of Ian McLagan.

Here’s the link to SXSW’s concert.

Certainly lots to look forward in 2014

Well let me see if I can help fill in the blanks to LWJ’s post above -and I do have to give you credit for some very perceptive sleuthing. We aren’t sure how we’re going to split the songs up but it very well could be close to what you have above.
The recordings with Bill Frisell were done with Greg Leisz, David Sutton & Butch Norton and I believe there are 14 tracks done with this group. The last night of that weeks session substituted Santa Davis on drums and included Ras Michael on jamaican hand drums.
There are two tracks recorded with the legendary Tony Joe White on guitar (and harmonica on one song) the band on those tracks are Pete Thomas on drums (from Elvis Costello’s bands -the current Impostors and the original Attractions-and Jack Shit), Sebastian Steinberg on bass (from Soul Coughing) and Greg Leisz.
Recorded that same week four more songs with Greg Leisz and Pete Thomas and Val McCallum (Jackson Browne and Jack Shit) on guitar and Bob Glaub on bass on two songs (check out the amazing records he has played on) and this will answer your question from above, Davey Faragher on bass for two songs (from Elvis Costello’s Impostors and Jack Shit).
This week we have been recording with Ian “call me Mac” McLagan (The Faces -and Small Faces, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart etc) Stuart Mathis (Wallflowers & Lu’s current touring guitarist) and Greg L, Pete T, and Davey F. We have one more night of recording with this line up tonight and it looks like we will end up with 8 or 9 more songs.
I am always hesitant to gush about recordings here in the forum for several reasons: 1) what else would I say? 2) don’t want to over hype 3) we still have a ways to go with mixing etc so the release is still a ways away -shooting to hit early April for the first record.
I can say this -this is the fourth record i’ve been involved with with Lu and none of the other recording sessions have been like these. There has been an incredible energy and spirit and everyone involved truly believes they are working on something very special. I can also add that we are making this record in a way that nobody does anymore. It is being done almost completely live in the studio- each song is done over live in it’s entirety until we get the magic take. Lu has become obsessed with being able to say that each song was recorded live meaning that what you hear on the record will be intact as it was recorded. She has given to the fact that she want’s some backing vocals on some songs, but those will most likely be 90% of any overdubs. What that has created is a massive amount recording -we have multiple versions of every song as it is being worked on -in some cases very different versions of the same song, we have long versions (one 19 minute song that is so beyond description we aren’t sure what we’re going to do with it), we have solo versions etc and a couple songs have been done with both of the different groups. We have everything -the range of songs is incredible-as a whole it would be a pretty amazing artistic statement.
Ok -there is the update i’ve been meaning to post for the last few weeks – I’ve probably said more a lot than I intended but I’ll blame it on the adrenaline of this past week -and month.
I will say one more thing.
We still aren’t quite done yet -we have about four more songs to record after today. So much for that recording budget.

Thanks Tom O for such a comprehensive update, very exciting news indeed.
    A couple of comments.
    1. Who is Davey F. ?
    2. Your quote :”we have long versions (one 19 minute song that is so beyond description we aren’t sure what we’re going to do with it: KEEP it, it is double over Rarity and Lynard’s Free Bird.
    3. Go ahead and overhype anytime in the friendly forum.
