So it it’s been pretty quiet around these parts for the last couple of weeks so I thought I”d better give it up with some new info. Because of that quiet I decided to start a new thread for this particular announcement but if Mr. Moderator feels that is should be part of the previous thread on this topic, I will not sue him.
Drum roll please…. I know it seems unbelievable but after nearly 10 years out of print it looks like we now have a street date for the S/T (Rough Trade) record in this the 25th Anniversary year of the original release. We are shooting for 10/29 or possibly 11/6 as the date it re-enters the world. I do have to mention that there is a bit of bad news so I’ll get that out of the way first. I had always planned to use the video that we shot of the RT album from El Rey night of the LA album shows, but that is now looking unlikely due to clearance issues. The good news is that,as I have probably mentioned a time or ten, that we have the original and Mr. Liljestrand has gone thru and made them sound just amazing the improvement over any of the previous releases is to my ears truly stunning. In addition I am going thru all the extra tracks from that era to see what we have- and in addition to see what we might be missing if anything. So I welcome suggestions from any of you who might know what exists from this period.
Here’s where it might get a little fun–I am looking for any video footage of Lu that anyone might have or know about for possible inclusion into the deluxe version. I had one person reach out to me a year or so back that had some footage shot from that era out here in LA at El Cid’s and I’m going to try and track that down. If anyone knows of anything else please let me know.
The only other details that I can add are that we will proably do a single disc version and two or three disc deluxe version, as well as a vinyl version.
Questions/suggestions welcome -more news as I have it.Great – looking forward to the De Luxe-Edition and that it seems finally not to be necessary any longer to play this record louder than others because of it’s held back mixing (I own the CD-Version of the 1998-Remix, it’s the record that made cry a lot of tears and to a loyal and thankful fan of Lu’s work immediately, a few weeks before “Car Wheels…” blew me away and opened my mind for the beauty of “Americana”).
By the way: last week I was part of the audience of an Elvis Costello-Concert. A good friend named it: “a fantastic singer, a fantastic guitarist, a fantastic entertainer, a fantastic songwriter with a fantastic band (The Imposters)”. A few days before I listened to his Radioshow with Lucinda. Seems to be a really good year, musically! In November Josh Ritter and Tift Merritt are coming to the Netherlands… well… Too sad that JJ Cale has passed away.Great news Tom O, I’m looking forward to the release.
If there will be a 3 disc deluxe release, will it include the radio show from Eindhoven, NL from 1989 as you alluded to in the other S/T thread some time ago ?
Your request for videos from the 1988, 1989 era my search hasn’t been too fruitful but I do have a couple of suggestions.A given: The Rough Trade promotional video of “Passionate Kisses” coupled with perhaps this video from 1992 era with Mary Chapin Carpenter’s cover. Since Lu and Mary each were recipient’s of Grammy’s for the song I think it would make a nice inclusion to the disc. I did find at one time a video from the TNN TV series “American Music Shop” dated June 4, 1992 with Lu , Mary Chapin and Tim O’Brien doing “Passionate Kisses”, but it seems to have disappeared off the net.

I found a short version of “Crescent City’ from 1991 at the Palomino Club (Ronnie Mack’s Barn Dance) with Lu starting at the 2:45 mark of the video. I think I posted this earlier in the forum.

The DVD includes ALL songs from the S/T except for “Like a Rose” and ” I Asked For Water…..” or better yet include the whole DVD again (pending the OK from New West Records. It might help with the sales of the deluxe set ?There are lots of articles from this era that may lead to other possible videos to include.

LWJ– Thanks for all the legwork -there doesn’t seem to be much from that era. I went thru Lu’s archive of old vhs tapes and didn’t really come up with anything there either. I am curious if there might be more of the Palomino footage.
I do have some great footage of Lu doing 3 different Hank Williams songs at the Palomino but it’s from ’93 so that makes it post Sweet Old World.@TOverby wrote:

A video on the history of Ronnie Mack’s at the Palomino with “Changed the Locks”, but I think this one is more recent then the era you are searching. It’s still a great video to enjoy.

The one I posted earlier part of “Crescent City” is from ronnie Mack’s 3rd anniversary. I know you and Lu were at Ronnie Mack’s in perhaps the last year, so maybe they might provide the full video ?

Next is the poster from a two night show at the Fillmore in SF with Lu backing up the Cowboy Junkies ( a great Canadian band eh!) from June 5,6, 1989.
Thirdly is the cover art from KPFK-FM Folkscene radio broadcast in Los Angeles Feb. 26, 1989.

I’m curious about the message on the KPFK artwork–This master is meant to burn TAO. Did you put that there?It seems like someone took a bootleg and remastered it. That phrase is not on the original bootleg cover art.

Was just going thru all the cassette tape archives looking to see if I had that 2/26/88 KPFK show and found an undated KPFK tape -just listened to it and it was recorded a week before that Kerrville LA show. It had Something About What Happens, Side Of The Road (the host asks her what it’s about and she says “wouldn’t you like to know” and then starts laughing) and Sundays. Very good versions all with Gurf and John Ciambotti.

That’s funny – we ran into Electric Earl a year or so ago and he reached out said he had some footage from a Hank Williams tribute night at the Palomino in ’93-really great footage of three songs as it turns out. Ironically enough I just emailed him to see if he had anything else from those Palomino days.

Tom O, I know you stated you have the original S/T for re-mixing etc., just wondering if you have this gem.
It’s item # 17263 for $60.00 and purports to be an original test pressing of the S/T dated September 6, 1988 from your local record shop Rockaway Records. Why you could just hop in your car and drive there.
