Toronto singer-songwriter Doug Paisley took a stripped down approach to recording his Golden Embers EP. The entire project was recorded live with no overdubs, just a bunch of a musicians sitting around in a circle. And Paisley used just one acoustic guitar for the whole session: the Bourgeois Country Boy he’s favored for more than a decade. In many ways, this sublime country folk record pays tribute to the bluegrass music Paisley performed for many years. Though it has keyboards and drums, “fundamentally, it was about the mandolin and the guitar for me,” he says of this EP.
Golden Embers is a great introduction to this rising star in Americana music. To date he’s received rave reviews from Time Out New York, the New Yorker, Mojo and others. We here at the FJ are loving this project, too.
