Well are we to see a new set of players backing Lucinda when she returns to the road in February? Doug Pettibone appears to have left the fold, after nearly 8 years of sterling service and brilliant playing and harmonies, as he is currently touring Europe and the U.K. with Ray LaMontagne.
January 30, 2009 at 3:31 pm #38618tonygKeymasterThat doesn’t mean he won’t be with LW when it’s time to start her tour. (Ooops yes it does.)
P.S. Ray’s Euro tour ends 2/28 in Amsterdam. Lu’s tour starts 2/19. Innaresting.
(edited for being wrong.)
January 30, 2009 at 6:08 pm #38619TimParticipantG-Man, I’ve been fearing this for two years. I hope it’s not true, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it is. It’ll be a major, major loss!
January 30, 2009 at 6:47 pm #38620fuji81ParticipantSay it isn’t so TO! Buick 6 was just hitting their stride IMO.
January 30, 2009 at 7:39 pm #38621G-ManParticipantIt is a fact. I have been a close friend of Doug’s for the past ten years and he e-mailed me from Dublin yesterday and when I popped the question in my e-mail reply he telephoned me with the answer this afternoon. It’s not for me to give any reasons that is clearly between Doug, Lucinda and her team of people. The world moves on. Lucinda will survive and continue to be creative without Doug and Doug will find new music to add his distinctive guitar and vocal flavours to.
January 30, 2009 at 7:43 pm #38622TimParticipantG-Man, do you know if Jimmy Christie is playing drums with Ray?
January 30, 2009 at 7:49 pm #38623DavidinMaineParticipantWell, in the world of tenure, touring guitartists, and LWs, DPs 8-year stint is indeed impressive not to mention the depth and Louisana Swamp-a-billy that his sound brought to so many of her recordings. He and his Matchless amps will be missed. I wonder if this means that a different incarnation of Buick 6 will hit the road or will the tour morph in some other direction?
January 30, 2009 at 8:19 pm #38624fuji81ParticipantBummer… He will be missed. Happy trails…
January 30, 2009 at 8:30 pm #38625LeftyParticipantThings can get too comfortable for all parties concerned.
Reminds me of when Sexton & Campbell left Dylan.
Best wishes to Doug.
Lu will survive, advance, evolve.January 30, 2009 at 10:37 pm #38626tonygKeymasterThis is a severe and devastating bummer.
January 30, 2009 at 11:32 pm #38627stellablueeeParticipantfor those of you lucky enough to catch one of ray’s shows in europe, not only do you get doug pettibone, but you also get greg leisz ! those two alone are worth the price of admission.
greg’s only with them as far as march/the berlin show. but i see ray’s booked at the hollywood bowl, i’m sure he’s happy about that!like lefty said, lucinda will evolve……..
happy weekend all! going to largo for dave rawlings and gillian welch tonight
lisaJanuary 31, 2009 at 12:30 pm #38628DavidinMaineParticipantIt was not too, too long ago when Ray Lamontagne was living in Western Maine (voluntarily off the power grid with this family) where he was working and writing. I remember seeing him at a very small room in Portland along with several talent scouts from England and the rest is history. Rightfully so, he took off like a rocket and now is the reluctant leader of a new Dead Head (Phish, DMB, etc) nation. It will be very interesting to see how he helps Ray to interpret his music–I think Doug is as much a band leader as he is a guitar player–he will bring much dimension and talent to Ray’s band–not to mention an awesome collection of guits. I also remember early in Doug’s tenure with LWs when he was playing along with Bo Ramsey. There was obvious friction between Bo and LWs with Doug playing mediator as the tour made its final dates. Being a well-tested road warrior is also a valuable skill. I am looking forward to seeing this tour and listening for Doug as he appears on studio albums from time-to-time as well…
January 31, 2009 at 1:57 pm #38629jackstrawParticipantso pettibone -finally- split.
i believe there’s an old adage for stuff like this, something about
f*cking up a wet dream?anyone need a pair of wellmont tickets?
January 31, 2009 at 5:39 pm #38630TimParticipantThings will never be the same for me without Doug! I wish I had this info before I purchased the tickets to three shows. Can’t wait to see and hear him with Ray!
January 31, 2009 at 5:42 pm #38631TimParticipantjackstraw, I remember you saying not too long ago that you were surprised that Doug was still around. Overby viciously took you to task on it. Turns out that you were alot smarter than he was. I think alot of the older fans have a decent sense of what goes on behind the scenes.
