And, if you believe that release date, there’s a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you… 😉

The DVD of Sugar Mountain contains a preview of the Archives release. It’s fantastic. Which means it will probably never come out.

“That this back-and-forth exists is one of the consequences of the influence that the web now has in our lives. Think back 20 years: Even if fans were to get worked up about this sort of thing, what would be the outlet for it? But the ability of devotees to fire back has emboldened them to, in some cases, take a proprietary view of the project. Which may come as news to the headstrong Young, who has held out this long to do exactly what he wanted to do. Who knows? Maybe the outcry will spur him to rethink the concept. Maybe he’ll just pack it up and cancel the whole thing.”

And there you have it. Thanks for the link, Tim!

“There’s a bailout comin’, but it’s not for you. It’s for all those creeps hiding what they do…”

    Sing it, NEIL! 8)

I read that he has a new album in the works that will bump both Toast and The Archives releases. Typical. And still no word in the make up LA show.

This Note’s Not For You (www.newyorker.com)

Neil Young was mad at Warner Bros./Reprise for pulling his videos from YouTube, but he isn’t mad anymore. In a statement released over the weekend, he appeared to reverse his earlier position, which seemed to suggest that Warner Bros. was being greedy when it demanded payment for all YouTube videos. The new statement was far more conciliatory and corporate-friendly:

It is time for industry-wide standards of artist’s compensation on the web. Reprise and Warner Bros artists deserve what artists from other labels are getting. Let the people decide what constitutes success. Warner Bros and Reprise are looking for a level playing field. Until they get one, these problems may not go away. That is the essence of the issue between Warner Bros Reprise and You Tube.

Young’s reversal seemed to throw everyone, even the people over at the Thrasher’s Wheat fan site, who have now spent days deciphering Young’s position. Is he mad at the record label, is he mad at YouTube, or is he mad at everyone?

    From Rolling Stone online:

When Neil Young began playing nine new songs a night towards the end of his 2008 tour it became apparent a new album was in the works. Today it was confirmed that Fork in the Road, a theme record about Young’s Linc Volt electric car project, will come out April 7th. The title track was turned into a hilarious YouTube video earlier this year. The only previously unheard song is “Johnny Magic,” a loving tribute to Jonathan Goodwin, who is Young’s partner in the Linc Volt project. Young has spent significant amounts of time working with Goodwin at his Wichita Kansas garage over the past year. Goodwin, known as the “motorhead messiah,” is one of the worlds preeminent electric car experts, and has little interest in his partner’s other career. “For the first month I thought he was Neil Diamond,” Goodwin told Rolling Stone last year. “I guess he is another singer. My wife told me ‘That’s Neil Young. He sings the older songs.’ To this day I’ve never listened to any of his music.”
