After a long week/month at the job, I am incredibly excited to get out, kick back and see Lu’s first night at the Dakota on Friday.

Has anyone on the boards been to the Dakota before? My wife and I had tickets for a show last time she played here, but circumstances (blizzard, cancelled babysitter) stopped us from getting there. From their site, it looks like the doors open 5:30, sit-down dinner is available at that point, and the show starts at 7:00. Never having been to a dinner club type show before, what have others experiences been?

Anyway, looking forward to the concert….and like always wishing we had tix for the other nights too.

    From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

    1. The Set List.
If you’re going to see Lucinda Williams at the Dakota, arrive on time to catch the Kenneth Brian Band.
Well, it’s a stripped down version of these Alabama Southern rockers. But Brian, who has a ZZ Top starter kit beard and a suitable Billy Gibbons flair with the electric guitar, is a talented dude in a Jamey Johnson kind of alt-country way. Moreover, Brian and members of his band, including fiddler Lillie Mae Rische, sit in with Lucinda at various points, adding much needed depth and dynamics.
As for Lucinda, her Friday set was a bit disappointing, as my review indicated. She chatted more about the business of music instead of the creating of it. And her set list left something to be desired. (Personally, I always long for “Righteously.”)
Here is what she and Doug Pettibone played on Friday:
Lake Charles/ Side of the Road/ People Talkin’/ The Night’s Too Long/ Jackson/ Crescent City/ Bus to Baton Rouge/ When I Look at the World (new song)/ Make the World Go Away (Hank Cochran)/ Jailhouse Tears/ Concrete & Barbed Wire/ Pineola/ Something Wicked This Way Comes (new)/ Hard Time Killing Floor Blues (Skip James)/ Real Live Bleeding Fingers & Broken Guitar Strings/ Change the Locks (Tom Petty)/ Joy ENCORE Nothin in Ramblin (Memphis Minnie)/ Jambalaya (Hank Williams)/ Get Right with God (with four members of Kenneth Brian Band

I loved last night’s show (Friday 2/1/13) at the Dakota! The set list was perfect and it sounded amazing. So thankful to have been there!

I just tweeted Jon Bream, for what it’s worth, with a mention correcting the record on who covered whom.

I’m certain I am using my who’s and whom’s in a manner that has the Professor marking it up with the red ink. 😛

All in all Jon’s review is fair but it’s a good example of there’s more than meets the eye. We decided to keep the set a little bit quieter in the first part just to get a feel for the room. After playing elevated stages in deep rooms in Chicago, Dallas and elsewhere the Dakota is a wide room -meaning it extends to the right and left instead of back from the stage. Also the stage is not elevated very much so the people right around the stage are right on top of the amps. It was on everyone’s mind and we (including Lu) were very nervous that Doug’s normal volume would peel the faces of the people around the stage. And of course there had to be a woman sitting right in front of Doug with her fingers in her ears. Lu asked a couple of times if it was too loud and most everyone said Noooo!!! Turn it up!!!! While we really can’t play at the volume that we have been playing at, I think tonight will be a little different. Sometimes you try and have the right concerns but you just can’t win.

    Dakota Jazz Club – Night 3 (Feb 4, 2013)

I was creeping around on twitter for set list songs/details of tonight’s show. It’s quite possible these songs and ramblings by Lu were played/uttered tonight.

    Holly Ziemer tweeted following:

    Finally. Passionate kisses #lucindawilliams

Car wheels on a gravel road….love this song #lucindawilliams pic.twitter.com/vsicPmd3

U hang around with trash u can’t come out clean #lucindawilliams (Well Well Well)

And apparently there is snow all around: Very Mpls: watching grt #lucindawilliams show & workers shoveling store fronts @ same time

A C. Riemenschneider (a Star Tribune music writer, according to his Twitter bio) tweeted following:

Those Three Days (!!) was played and with this intro by Lu:

“If u can’t play it w/out a full band, it’s prob not a very good song.” -Lucinda @HappyWoman9 after “trying” & nailing Those 3 Days acoustic

Hearing Lucinda sing Changed the Locks & Joy never ever ever gets old. Big finish @DakotaJazzClub

    John Swardson tweeted following:

Lucinda: This one’s called Metal Firecracker. Jim Walsh: Oh, fuck… #greatness

He too noted Lu’s comment about writing good songs with:

“If you can’t play a song without a band then it’s probably not worth writing.” #Lucinda #thegospel

    Drunken Angel #lucinda #dakota pic.twitter.com/dUYgntIY

Looks like Blessed made the set with a simple:

    Blessed by Lucinda Williams.

AND, the best comment ever, as tweeted by Mr. Swardson after he noted she played Metal Firecracker, was this:

“My husband Tom’s so cool. He’s got to listen to me singing songs about all those fools…” Lucinda

AMEN, Lu. I once told her we could get into an argument about who had the better husband.
    She laughed.

Partial setlist recap (not particularly in order they were played)

    Passionate Kisses
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
    Well Well Well
    Those Three Days
    Metal Firecracker
    Drunken Angel

Thanks, for the research, lafayette: the Dakota nights are apt to get blended and blurred. Two more shows to go there? Three?

I’m breaking this off into a separate thread. Perhaps the moderator could merge my Night 3 post? I found a great review with setlist.

    Question:

Wake Up Call is listed in set list. Is this correct title? Cover? The only info I can find is a Maroon 5 song? 😳

And Reason To Cry is not listed in set list, however, the writer notes Lillie Mae joins Lu during this song on fiddle.
