Thanks, Paul. Here are a few extras:

There was a very minor “false start” during song two, but Lu smiled through it.

The newly titled “Drivin’. . .” is Butchless. Lu stopped in the middle, backtracked slightly, then nailed it.

Emmylou got a shout-out in front of “SOW.”

Lu flubbed/repeated some lyrics during “Little Brother.” I was glad the familiar “Pineola” was next in sequence and that she launched boldly right into it.

Before “Lines,” Lu referred to the whole album as her “stepchild,” calling it a “hodgepodge” of tunes. After, she implied that if anyone thought the production history of Car Wheels long and difficult, SOW was even more “complex, complicated.”

Sidewalks and Memphis Pearl were both said to be influenced by her time living in LA (the first go-round). She said the city was more “constant” (???) now.

After song twelve, Lu pronounced that album “now off the turntable” and launched into the ones Paul listed. I thought “Buttercup” was especially strong. Among the SOW material, the new take on “Prove My Love” is really working for me.

Oh, she also said between “Which Will” and “Bitter M” that she kind of sees SOW as “sandwiched between the Rough Trade and Car Wheels” in her career.

“I Lost It” was said to have “held up pretty well.”

Bowie’s “Rebel RebeL” was said to be “the sexiest song ever written.”

Good to see backstreets and wife from Iowa, Vivian, Paul.

    Excellent recap, Paul!

Stoger, The “constant” comment was in relation to the prevalence of homelessness, as I recall. Lu said the inspiration for Memphis Pearl was seeing a woman in LA digging through the trash and wondering about her life, and that seeing that sort of desperation wasn’t as ‘constant’ then as now.

One of the reasons I went to the SOW show was to hear He Never Got Enough Love live, so I was taken aback by the reworking and new chorus, but, as with all things have faith in Lucinda’s artistry because the new version is pretty damn wonderful, and over time I think I will find it superior to the original. This album will be an amazing gift to longtime fans. I wonder if a SOW tour will accompany it, similar to the 25th anniversary of the Rough Trade album tour (first set, album in sequence, followed by a mixed second set, like last night).

Mr. and Mrs. Backstreets, Thanks for letting me nosh on your fries! I was famished after the show for some reason. Sorry I hallucinated seeing Lucinda at the pub… no explanation for that other than wishful thinking, I guess 😀

A woman behind me had tears streaming during Which Will… we all have the Lucinda song that gives us a sucker punch.

I meant to FaceTime live the show last night per request of WestWords, but the line situation had us into the venue too late to be at the rail or other convenient spot to record. I couldn’t hold my phone up over my head for the whole show 🙁 I’m bummed I couldn’t do it.

Anyone going to the Berklee show on May 10th? Need tickets?

    From Tom:
Lu was surprisingly stressed before the show going thru keys on a couple of songs last minute but once she got out there everything seemed to fall into place and she just sailed right thru it with a couple of minor hiccups. There are definitely some songs that have been rediscovered snd revitalized. The two biggest actual changes is she went back to the original title of Drivin’ Down A Dead Street and wrote a brand new verses and a new melody -which she feels is a big improvement over He Never Got Enough Love. Prove My Love has also been changed from a bluegrass country feel to more groovy r&b thing now. But the two biggest rediscoveries are Sidewalks Of The City and Memphis Pearl -the new recorded versions are pretty killer and both versions went over great last night.
At the end of the set list after a moving version of Which Will Lu said “ok time to take that record off the turntable”. She can pretty damn funny when she wants to be. After the show I was talking to a friend wh works in the business and he said he thoroughly enjoyed the show -and after I mentioned that we may do some Sweet Old World shows later in the year after the new version come out (9/29) and this person said “come back and do it again here”. I was surprised but who knows maybe we’ll come back and do it again.
