I’m in the process of buying as many songs Lu has sung on (as a duet partner, or on background vocals, etc.) as I can find, and I have been using the great list of “Guest Appearances” in her Wikipedia article to identify them. I did some additional research using her “Credits” list on All Music Guide and found some (7, to be exact) additional songs she has appeared on. So, I added those to the list on Wikipedia. Just a “heads up” for those of you who are interested and / or have used this list before.

As a side note, I added only individual songs which All Music Guide specifically mentioned her singing on. There were some entries (5 or so) for entire albums which she sang “background vocals” on unidentified songs. I didn’t add those since I couldn’t identify the specific songs. (To avoid buying whole albums for only one song, I am buying downloads from iTunes or Amazon whenever possible).

For the convenience of those interested here are the 7 songs I added:

2007 – John Platania — “In Memory of Zapata” on “Blues, Waltzes & Badland Borders”
2006 – Tim Easton — “Back to the Pain” on “Ammunition”
    2006 – P.F. Sloan — “Sins of a Family” on “Sailover”
2003 – Various Artists — Hang Down Your Head on “Crossing Jordan – Original Soundtrack”
1999 – Bonepony — “Sweet Bye and Bye” on “Traveler’s Companion”
1997 – R.B. Morris — “Glory Dreams” on “Take That Ride”
1997 – Bo Ramsey — “Desert Flower” on “In the Weeds”

Thanks, I downloaded the P.F. Sloan and Bo Ramsy songs.
Is “Hang Down Your Head” available on itunes?

I haven’t found “Hang Your Head” on either iTunes or Amazon, Parker. It’s on my “Need To Get” list. FYI, the original version by Tom Waits is there, albeit only in 128 kbps (I’m picky about sound quality & trying to get everything in 256 kbps via iTunes Plus or Amazon).

As for that Bo Ramsey tune, I’ve listened to it in its entirety since originally posting the list above, and I for the life of me cannot hear Lu’s voice anywhere. I love the song, but it doesn’t sound like anyone else is singing on it w Bo. I’ve also listened to samples (at AMG) from all the other tracks on the album, and I didn’t hear Lu in those samples, either. Hmmmm. The quote from allmusic.com that lead me to believe she was singing on “Desert Flower” was, “More contemporary figures are celebrated on In the Weeds as well — the wistful ‘Desert Flower’ is a tribute to Lucinda Williams, who also contributes harmony vocals.” Can you hear her in the track, Parker?

Funny thing is, I really like what I hear on the rest of the album & will probably buy the whole thing as a result. It’s no surprise – as we all know, Bo used to play w & produce Lu. And, I saw him play with Pieta Brown (his wife it turns out), and was blown away by his guitar playing. But, I’m still straining to hear Lu in this song. Maybe I’ll hear her once I get the whole album… πŸ˜•

Tom – Most impressive! My meager contribution to this endeavor would be to point out that Lu only sang the duet “Cruel Lips” on Graham Parker’s Your Country CD. And sometimes I wonder if I even hear her voice on this track. Maybe it’s just my imagination. Subtle indeed. PB

The CD of the “Crossing Jordan” soundtrack is available on Amazon for seven bucks, new.

Apart from Lu’s cover of Tom Waits’ Hang Down Your Head, you get Alison Krauss doing Can’t Find My Way Home, and Richard Thompson doing a blistering version of Donavan’s Season Of The Witch.

Not to mention series star Jill Hennessey’s versions of It’s All Over Baby Blue and others.

    Worth it.

Agreed. I just ordered it. One more off of the list… πŸ˜‰

I really enjoy “Carless Darling” with Ramblin’ Jack. Also, picked up “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” the other day. It sounds awesome.

“Desert Flower” I couldn’t hear her at all on that song.
I picked up “Closing In On the Fire” by Tony Joe White. She is good on that one.

Yep. Good song too. Reminds me of his song “Polk Salad Annie”, one of my favs. πŸ˜€

Another really good one is “Empty Cup” by Sue Foley. Lu only sings harmony vocals, but her voice really compliments Sue’s IMHO. Good swamp blues tune, too.

Thanks – I had fun doing it although it took me almost all of a Saturday afternoon (and nearly $30 for downloaded songs)! πŸ˜‰

I downloaded a 256 kbps version of “Cruel Lips” from Amazon & can definitely hear Lu’s singing. Are you listening to a lower bitrate MP3?

Sorry for all the posts in a row, but man oh man, am I having fun listening to all these songs (I’m finally getting a chance to do that today). It’s like getting a new Lu album (or two!).

Another really, really good tune on the list is “Lines Around Your Eyes” by Leftover Salmon. This is more than just a cover – Lu sings the entire lead in the song, and it is nearly a full minute longer than the original on SOW. I even think I like it better than the original. Lu’s vocals are sassier, the song has a little bit more of a Cajun feel to it than the original (thanks, I think, to the prominent accordion), and this version is even a little more up tempo it seems (believe it or not). HIGHLY recommended.

To help myself in tracking my acquisition of all these “guest appearance” songs listed on Lu’s Wikipedia entry (I now have all but 8 of them!), I converted the text list from the article to an Excel spreadsheet. No big deal, but if anyone else out there in Lu-Land is working on getting them all as well & wants a copy of the spreadsheet, I will be glad to send it to you. Just drop me a PM w/ your e-mail address & what format you’d like – the new *.XLSX XML format from MSOffice 2007/2008, or the older *.XLS format.
