Tonight was Rosanne Cash’s first show as Artist In Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Lu made a guest appearance. If anyone has a chance to catch Rosanne’s current show doing The River and The Thread in its entirety, it’s worthwhile. Lu joined in the second half and Rosanne gave her a glowing introduction. Referring to their friendship of 25 years (“Life is short, you need to play with girlfriends!”) and saying how Lu is an inspiration for her consistently high standards and quality songwriting. Lu did Something About What Happens When We Talk, which Rosanne said is one of her favorite Lu songs. Rosanne’s husband, John Leventhal, did a nice job on guitar. And Lu played Rosanne’s guitar… I’ve never seen that before. Then Tony Joe White did a blistering version of Polk Salad Annie. He’s a bad-ass, boss mofo. He is just cooler than the rest of us. It was incredibly special to hear such an iconic song live. Looking forward to tomorrow night! Viv

Alas, stoger, no Kenny Vaughan guest appearance last night… The guitarist is John Levanthal and the bassist is in Rosanne’s band, I believe (can’t remember the name). Also, Mike, when I clicked through the YouTube you posted, I came across one of Tony Joe White and the Foo Fighters! You know Tony Joe is the man when he makes Dave Grohl look like a total child poseur (no disrespect because I am a Dave Grohl/Foo fan): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH6ZoBcW9fc

fair enough, Viv: JL had that “shaggy dog” look which I love about KV; I don’t think Marty Stuart is touring, so it could have been Vaughan in Nash. But I trust your call on this.

    Six songs from our Lu:

1 Sweet Old World {LU accuses herself of “messing up” afterward and not having let Emmylou come in at the right time, to which Rosanne said “they didn’t notice”]
2 Jackson [appparently a demo exists with Emmylou’s voice on this–Lu sheepishly reports she replaced her at last minute with Jim Lauderdale]
3 The Ghost of Highway 20
    4 Untitled [“heaven, , ,”]
5 When I Look at the World
    6 something About What Happens…

The most special thing about last night, I think, was the genuine love among these three women. They are adoring fans of each other… Emmylou noted that she had “the best seat in the house” and she was grooving and as in the moment as any fan in the audience when Lu and Rosanne were doing their thing. At one point, Lu got choked up about being on stage with them, saying it was “spiritual.” It was amazing to witness. Rosanne said that Lu is “the most beautiful soul to ever put pen to paper.” They could not get enough of each other and we could not get enough of them. When the as-yet-untitled “Heaven” song is released, prepare to weep… it’s another lyrical dagger to the heart by Lu. Also wonderful to spend time with stoger and lafayette, kindred spirits! Viv

Thanks for filling in some blanks, Viv. I deliberately stayed casual and minimal with #3 and #4, though no one seems of yet to be clamoring for new song details. Viv and Lafayette, help me remember the other covers at end of evening; I know Rosanne did a great “North Country Girl” in her round. Yes, the emotion from Lu was palpable. It was a wonderful evening.

There’s little for me to add with the posting of the “No Depression” review – a wonderful, detailed summary of an amazing show I was privileged to witness. The company pre-show was fantastic as well. The FF was well represented, it was great to see you once again, stoger and Viv.

One thing not mentioned (I think) was the introduction of “Something About What Happens When We Talk.” Lu said Rosanne specifically asked if she would play that song. Lu, as noted in the ND review, was overcome with emotion several times, specifically after Emmylou had sung. I think she said something along the lines of “that voice.”

This photo was posted to Lu’s FB page. Viv, I suppose, according to the ND review, you were a day late and a dollar short on arriving at the pre show reception with the Reba and Trisha sightings as reported in ND.
