    Quote from Lucinda:
She attributes the change to developing more confidence in herself and her music, and that newfound confidence allowed her to go through her old notebooks searching for lost gems. Two of them wound up on Little Honey: “Circles and X’s,” and “If Wishes Were Horses,” both of which were written in the mid-‘80s. The inspiration for her journey through the past struck when she heard Laura Cantrell’s version of her song “Letters,” which Williams wrote around 1975 and recorded on a demo but never officially released.
Explains Williams, “She got a copy from a mutual friend and did a beautiful, really sweet version of it that made me think ‘Wow, she brought this early song back to life, maybe I should go back and review some of my old stuff.’ I’ve got all these tapes of old little songs. End Quote

Here is a link to Laura Cantrell’s recording of “Letters” from the album “Humming by the Flowered Vine”
You can hear a sample of the song.

I wonder how many of these lost gems Lucinda has left. ( Tom O can you shed a little light ? )

Wow! What a find, LWJ! Ms. Cantrell has a beautiful, crystal-clear voice, and the cover of Lu’s “Letters” sounds great – at least, based on the “snippet” of a preview available on Amazon. So much so, I ordered the CD!

I received this CD, Humming By The Flowered Vine by Laura Cantrell, from Amazon this morning. I just finished my first listen & I LOVE it! The purity and sweetness of her voice nearly takes by breath away. Lu’s song, “Letters” is good, but to be honest, several of the other songs on the CD are even better! I would highly recommend this album to any Lu fan…

Here are the lyrics to “Letters”:

I used to take the subway
    to 42nd and Broadway
    Check my downtown mailbox
    Check my downtown mailbox

    Always felt much better
when I got me a letter
    In my downtown mailbox
    In my downtown mailbox

    Send me a letter
Send it to me when you want to reach me
Might be in California, New York City or Nashville, Tennessee

Baby and I had a fight
    I couldn’t sleep last night
Thought he didn’t want me no more
Thought he didn’t want me no more

    I was satisfied
    when I went outside
Found a letter on my front door
    Letter on my front door

    Send me a letter
Send it to me when you want to reach me
Might be in California, New York City or Nashville, Tennessee
Early in the day late at night
Whatever you’re feeling you can always write
Send me a letter send it to me when you want to reach me

    It wasn’t very funny
    I didn’t have much money
There was not much food on the table
Not much food on the table

    I was feeling pretty low
I heard a knock at my door
It was Western Union with a cable
    Western Union with a cable

    Send me a letter
Send it to me when you want to reach me
Might be in California, New York City or Nashville, Tennessee
Early in the day late at night
Whatever you’re feeling you can always write
Send me a letter, send it to me when you want to reach me
Send me a letter, send it to me when you want to reach me
Send me, send me a letter
Send me, send me a letter
Send me, send me a letter

Thanks so much for finding this & posting the info about it, LWJ! Finding gems like this is one of the things I love about this forum!

So impressed am I with this artist, I started a thread about her in the “Singers and Songwriters” forum. It contains links to full length downloads of several of Ms. Cantrell’s songs, including the aforementioned “Letters”…

You are most welcome. For me, it’s a lot of fun to search out Lucinda’s many, many connections with other great artists.
I’d better see if my local Best Buy has Laura’s CD.

By the way, your music Credit Card must be maxed out by now.

Found a video of Laura Cantrell singing “Letters.
    Live at SXSW March, 2005
Not the best audio, but enjoy.
