I just read it, and was thinking about how different the song ‘Mama You Sweet’ ended up being from the original incantation, or at least it seems so to me, from the lines she quoted in that article. An awful lot of people wouldn’t have written a song which, as she said, was basically like “Thanks a lot, look at all the crap you left me to deal with in the wake of your leaving.” Somehow, in death, someone becomes transformed, and you’re supposed to never be angry at the fact that there IS a bunch of emotional stuff you end up having to deal with when someone close to you dies. I know I can relate to the feeling, having lost my father about 6 months before her mother died, and I’m sure many of us can relate. I wonder what made her change the song so drastically. There are still elements of the original lyrics in there, but the one on the record ended up being different in a lot of ways. The message was different, and the overall vibe.
It was a really interesting read, to say the least.
