Saw Lu last night @ the Great Park in Irvine– was underwhelmed by the venue (folding chairs on an airport runway) as well as by the audience, which appeared mostly to be made up of members of the Greater Orange County Shuffleboard and Needlepoint Society. I’ve heard more raucous applause at a chess match. As a result the slow was a bit flat, which, considering the technical difficulties and the narcoleptic crowd was probably inevitable… was surprised and happy that security let us stand at the foot of the stage for most of the show, thereby blocking the view of the first eight rows… was a great evening nonetheless, and just a thrill to hear her live!

You know she likes things just right and I can’t blame her and, I don’t really mind. She always works it out and things start flowing. Agree that the outside venue with a majority of people who did not know who she was probably affected the overall vibe. It certainly wasn’t the sing a long love fest we are all used to, but it was time well spent. Seating was odd. I would have put the folding chairs further back so that the little old ladies and their husbands wouldn’t have to complain to security about the people standing in front of the stage (to no avail I may add). It was a pleasant evening, my kids knew the songs (and yes they have heard worse than Lucinda’s comments and no, I don’t think it will kill them) and heck, it was free (ok $10 for parking but for 4 people not so bad).
August 15, 2011 at 9:01 pm #47845tonygKeymasterGood first post PattiLou. I thought it was weird that, with all of that open space, they put the stage and seats right smack on a runway. I envisioned us all sitting out on a green lawn in some type of urban oasis. It was also unsettling to be driving across the runways when I was parking. I looked both ways first.
It took me 2 hours to get there. I’m glad I went.
August 15, 2011 at 9:26 pm #47846GrumpyMamaParticipantI’m so disappointed that I couldn’t get down there with my daughter (now I’m really Grumpy). Based upon the last 2 posts, I think all in all I’m OK with having missed this one. I do want to know how the big balloon ride was, though. Anyone?
August 15, 2011 at 10:11 pm #47847tonygKeymasterSorry we missed you Grumpy. You could not have dragged me onto the balloon ride kicking and screaming.
The balloon was an enormous orange orb, spotlight lit, that was tethered to the ground with a cable. At the bottom sat a large round gondola. I saw it go up and down all night, you could see it as clear as a bell from the concert area. It went very high in the air, maybe 10 stories. Every once in a while you would look up and there it was, hanging over the stage.
The merry go round was more my speed.
