October 1, 2009 at 2:42 pm #40506LafayetteParticipantI found a sponsored link to “The Village” as I logged into my MS account.
One minute clips of all the artists involved in this project. Lu sounds amazing! AND Amos Lee 😀 and Shelby Lynn and Mary Chapin Carpenter and…

October 1, 2009 at 3:38 pm #40507tntracyParticipantCool. Thanks for the link Lafayette (I’m going to start calling you “Lafayette the Linker”! 😉 )
From the snip of Lu singing “Positively 4th Street”, it sounds like a different version than the one she recorded years ago. That’s awesome – not that the old one is bad, but now I’ll have two versions. The more Lu the merrier!
Definitely a must-buy. In fact, I’m heading straight for Amazon to place it on pre-order…

Oh, one of those Neils anyway – one is the same as another, right? 😈 😈 😈

October 31, 2009 at 12:51 am #40513tntracyParticipantI just got a copy of this new CD today a little early (official release is this Tuesday, Nov. 3rd) – someone was selling a copy of it on eBay – open, but in brand new condition, probably a promo copy – and I won it for the bargain-basement price of $10 including shipping. Any way, I’ve given it a listen, and I have to say that I love it.
First & foremost is Lu’s rendition of “Positively 4th Street”. Some (many?) of you may be familiar with a cover of this Dylan classic that Lu did several years ago. Well, the version on this CD has a slower tempo and a slightly sparser arrangement than that previous version. Her vocals are up front and very prominent; very emotional as well. Top notch, IMHO.
Other highlights from the album (in my mind, at any rate) are a cover of Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” by Shelby Lynne (great vocals), a kind of funky version of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” by Rickie Lee Jones, a rousing cover of “Guantanamera” by Los Lobos, & a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” by Rachael Yamagata.
And, without a doubt, the biggest revelation for me on the CD is a cover of Dylan’s “It’s Alright Ma I’m Only Bleeding” by a band I had never before heard of called The Duhks. The lead singer, Sarah Dugas, has an incredible voice – a band I will definitely be checking out in the very near future.
Bottom line, this is a great CD I would recommend highly – not only for Lu’s contribution, but for the album as a whole.
Tom
P.S. Oh, and as a nod to Lafayette – Amos Lee’s rendition of Fred Neil’s “Little Bit Of Rain” is damn good in it’s own right. I just have a built-in bias for female vocalists, hence my above focus…
October 31, 2009 at 1:59 am #40514LafayetteParticipantOh, thank you for the review, tnt!
I saw, via my email inbox, you had responded to this thread and my immediate thought, before I checked the forum, is your post was a friendly reminder this collection was being released on Tuesday.
I’m off to order from Amazon right now! Thanks for giving Amos a listen ( I do love me some Amos) as I know you gravitate toward female vocalists/singer songwriters. I won’t hold it against you. 😮 I gravitate towards male vocalists/singer songwriters. Lu is my exception.
October 31, 2009 at 5:17 am #40515LafayetteParticipantLucinda shines in this particular review as well as The Duhks (good call, tnt). Amos, not so well.

“Dylan is well represented, with five versions of his classics here, while former muse Suze Rotolo contributes liner notes. The best Dylan cover is Lucinda Williams’ sparse and world-weary take on “Positively 4th Street.” with the Duhks’ version of “It’s Alright Ma I’m Only Bleeding” also being a worthy one.”

Eh, what does he (she?) know. I found Rickie Lee Jones’ “annoying boho shtick” entertaining.
But, then again, I am pretty open-minded, musically speaking… 😉
