Thought I’d take the liberty of starting the thread for tonight’s show reports, etc….

We made it!!! We just pulled into the Holiday Inn on Atlantic Ave., 3.5 miles from the venue. Traffic was brutal getting here from Santa Monica, but we are here.

Tonyg, I saw your post for the Maya Hotel around 4:30 in the Napa thread. Sounds good to me – see you there, but it’ll probably be 5:30 or so when we make it, after getting cleaned up, etc. I’ll be the big, ugly guy with the goofy grin, gray hair & beard & glasses… 😉

I’m actually going to try to take a little video if I can get away with it – especially of new songs. I have a little Flip MinoHD video recorder I’m going to try & get into the venue & use (they took it from me at Saratoga – I will be more careful this time… 😉 )

will you be meeting robert/KJR there?

I just spoke to his cousin on the phone (Robert was driving) – they may meet us at the Maya Hotel…

    Tom;
And a video or two since it’s outdoors and we have had few videos of the tour so far but especially of a new song.Hope you have time to see the Queen Mary and the art deco interior.
    Above all enjoy the concert.

p.s. Wow, as I was typing my wish about videos you beat me to the punch. That’s great.

if you manage, try to record 2 kool, should it happen. we only have 2 videos of it on youtube (plus the SNL stunning performance which i’ll upload shortly). for a car wheels song (scratch that, for a *masterpiece*), it’s very unrepresentated. have a great time!

    great! give him my regards.

OK – I will if they play it. I hope they do – I’ve e-mailed Tom about it & also mentioned it in Saratoga to him…

    great! give him my regards.

    OK!

Tonyg’s setlist is correct; I will, however, repeat it below with some additional notes about Lu’s comments between songs:

    “Hey, everybody”

    1. I Just Wanted To See You So Bad
    2. Big Red Sun Blues
    3. Pineola
    4. I Lost It

Here, Lu said she wanted to do “a couple of Louisiana songs.” She mentioned the 5 year anniversary of Katrina, and that there are still people in dire need of help in New Orleans. She mentioned the poverty that existed in the city before the hurricane, compounded by existing political corruption and questions about where much of the money donated has gone.

    5. Crescent City
    6. Lake Charles

Lu here asked if it “sounds OK out there”, followed by an enthusiastic yell from the audience.

    7. Blue (David broke out the upright bass for this one)

After the applause died down, I shouted out, “Thank you, Lu!”, as this was the one song request I had made here in the forum in response to TOverby’s post asking for song requests (and he verified after the show it was indeed added “just for me.” Thanks Tom & Lu!). My “shout out” prompted Lu to talk about her recent “discovery” of Facebook, how her fan page has rapidly grown from 10,000 “likes” to 60,000, and how she & Tom had asked for song requests on her fan page. She recommended Facebook as “a great way to keep in touch with a lot of people.”

    8. 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten (KJR got his wish! 😉 )

Lu introduces Val as playing with Jack Shit in the LA area & recommends going to see them play. And, she introduces David & Butch. Then she says she wants to play a new song about a “Bad Boy” that she still had “in her system.” She mentions it is the only “Bad Boy” song on the new album, and that it is about the same person “Jailhouse Tears” is about.

    9. Buttercup

In introducing the next song, she says it is another “Bad Boy” song off of CWOAGR. She says she could release a “best of the Bad Boy songs” record & it could be a double album.

    10. Metal Firecracker

Lu introduces the next song as “one of the most requested songs, if not the most requested.”

    11. Drunken Angel

She restarted a verse during “Drunken Angel”, and apologized here, explaining that she has this “obsessive / compulsive thing” about starting songs or verses over that she doesn’t get just right, and that the band “is always on standby” for her to do so.

    12. Out Of Touch
    13. Essence
    14. Real Live Bleeding Fingers And Broken Guitar Strings

Lu says here that “it is hard to rock out outdoors – the sound just disappears”, and asks again if it sounds OK. More enthusiastic yells from the audience to the affirmative.

    15. Born To Be Loved
    16. Righteously (Val, who had smoked on “Out Of Touch” & “Essence”, hit one out of the park IMHO on the solo here…)

“Thanks again for coming out tonight” & re-introduction of the band members, mentioning where each is from. Also, a big thank you to Chrissie & a mention of what a big influence she has been on Lu’s music.

    17. Honey Bee

    Encore:

For the encore, Lu introduces “a special guest” – Vicki Peterson Cowsill on guitar, “from The Bangles”.

    18. Joy

For the fashion report, Lu wore a lacy, low cut black top, black jeans, and brown boots, 3/4 up the calf, with a strap and brass buckle over the upper and at the top. She wore her glasses the entire show.

The venue was absolutely spectacular (Lu & Tom both mentioned how much they liked it after the show). Right at the water’s edge, with the RMS Queen Mary nearby, a waning full moon, and a perfect evening with temperatures in the low 70’s. There were 20 rows or so of plastic chairs up front, with a generous amount of room between rows (although the chairs themselves were zip-tied together in each row) & with lawn seating to the rear. Oh, and the very nicest porta-johns I have ever seen (the ladies all mentioned their appreciation of this touch). A wonderful evening indeed.

It was great meeting tonyg & KJR for the first time, and seeing West Words, paul_from_losangles & WebMASTA once again. I’m looking forward to tomorrow night in San Diego!

P.S. While I shot some video w/ my little Flip camcorder, including of both new songs, I just previewed them on my laptop & the quality is pretty damn bad. Lu & Val’s faces are badly overexposed (from the spotlights shining on them), and the audio is distorted as hell (we were on the 3rd row nearly in front of the PA bank stage left). I will try to edit them when I get home in iMovie, but I am afraid they are going to be a lost cause. The Flip has no settings for exposure or sound level, so I was stuck with what I got no matter what I did. And, this being my first experience at a concert using it, I was not sure what to expect. Oh well…. 😳 😥

great remark, now i’m confortable to laugh (re: a previous one from lucinda about a album of suicide songs).

nice report, tom. terrific setlist. i hope she keeps performing songs from “back then” in the next few years, when i plan to catch a couple of shows. good to know, from a previous report, that she doesn’t get tired of playing drunken angel after a decade.

    Great reports!

Sounds like webmasta was issued his kitchen pass.

Are there still rumblings of added shows for September?

Great report Tom. This is the third time I have met you for the first time! I was also pleased to meet West Words and to see Paul as always. I wAs happy to see that Webmasta made it. I hope everyone has a good time tonight while I remain behind on this old bucket of a boat.

I got to Long Beach around 4:30 yesterday and was pleased to replace the now usual blow torch type heat with a cool and breezy 70 degree evening under the blue sky. The site was indeed perfect for us. I somehow missed everyone who went to the Hotel Maya but met up with everyone before Chrissie’s set. I was lucky enough to be in the first row, right in front of Val. The website was well represented, although we get no love from Lu as she again went on at length about her Facebook site like it was some marvelous new invention. I guess we are comfortably under the radar here, hiding in plain site.

Chrissie’s set was good, her new CD is starting to grow on me, I guess I will have to pick it up. The guitarist, Patrick, is phenomenal. A tight 60 minute set took us from 7:40 to 8:40. Lots of Chrissie fans near me.

Lu started around 9:10 and seemed in good spirits and she was in fine voice. The setlist has been covered and Tom’s remarks are spot on. Once again she seemed preoccupied with the sound. There were several flubs as Tom mentioned but she just laughed them off. I think the pleasant setting and cool air put everyone in a nice place. Val indeed put on a nice show, he has much improved since Ventura and he knows the songs now. A tad rock and rolly at times. He looked like he was having fun.

After the show I said my goodbyes and went back to the QM as I was fried, having been up to 2 am the night before seeing Ryan Bingham. I wonder if the band stayed here as I saw Butch here before the show and I think I saw a member of the sound crew as I was coming back from breakfast. No ghost sightings.

I have a picture to post as soon as I figure out how.

Tom: It was indeed great to meet you and the other LW fans. Didn’t stay around after the show as my wife and cousin wanted to leave. Will share my show “documentation” with you (was afraid of jinxing it so didn’t mention it before the show), along with the next phase of “the project.”

Here is a picture of some drop dead handsome guys. You can just barely make them out behind Paul, Tom, and me.

Sorry I didn’t get to meet KJR.
