LITTLE HONEY

Actually have a friend at a record store and heard it there.

I know all the reviews have been saying how this album is all sunshine and happiness, which there is a great deal of, but believe me when I say there is still plenty of the darker stuff on this disc. I’d agree that in general the music is much more upbeat, rock and southern, but there are lots of darker moments in the lyrics of a couple of the songs.

Tom — You should get it Tues.-especially if its already shipped. That is Amazons deal on pre-orders, they get the cds in advance so they can have them in peoples hands on the street date.

Yes -that is odd- must’ve been a data entry mistake on their part. They will definitely ship to arrive on street date-otherwise they would lose a big percentage of pre-orders.

Cool – I hope so. The shipment confirmation e-mail says expected delivery of Wednesday, but it did ship today & I get UPS 2 day shipping by being an Amazon Prime member, so maybe it will be here on Release Day. UPS tracking doesn’t show a delivery date yet.

I know I’ve said this before, but I can’t wait! I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning… 😆

With last year’s West, Lucinda Williams perhaps reached the high water mark of her career thus far, charting romantic disaster and bereavement with an unflinching eye and a big heart, and still finding room for her lustful swagger.

On Little Honey, however, the tide appears to be ebbing somewhat, judging by the plethora of glum, dull songs which bring little insight or relief to their subjects. “Little Rock Star” is a leaden rocker cautioning some unnamed star about “buying more fame by cashing your chips in”, “Well Well Well” a raggedy back-porch country-rocker about bad luck, “Circles & X’s” a desolate recognition that a relationship is over, and “Jailhouse Tears” a lazily rendered duet with Elvis Costello. “Knowing” is slightly better, while “It’s a Long Way to the Top” falls back on that least excusable of complaints, the hardship of the rock’n’roll life. By far the best songs are those her band Buick 6 inhabit most intimately, with Williams musing upon what to expect in the afterlife in “Heaven Blues”, and offering a tribute to some unrecognised genius in “Rarity” over a Lambchop-esque watercolour tinted with poignant horns, vibes and organ: “They’ll say you’re a rarity, and sleep in your bed/And strangle your purity, and leave you for dead”.
