October 15, 2008 at 1:59 am #36357stevarinoParticipantI just ran out to pick up Honeybee from the mall. I’m listening to “Knowing” as I’m typing. What a great song, its so beautifully produced, her voice sounds so good, and the instruments sound so professionally played. I’ve heard many of the songs off the album this summer during the JCM tour, but the newly released songs are awesome. Well Well Well has such great guitar work by Chet and Doug, its a classic already. I thought it was a cover of an old blues hit, but looking at the CD it seems to be a new song. And for those whining about missing her old stuff, the knowing song sounds like something that could have been off the self titled album, the first I ever owned. Heaven Blues sounds like an extension of Get Right With God off her Essence album. And though I never heard the whole song until tonight, of course Rarity will become a classic Lucinda Williams song. Finally, I’m listening to Plan to Marry and I can tell its an important song. I need to listen to it a few more times to understand what she is saying. It seems like a protest song.
I’ll be seeing her with some old friends up in Columbus tomorrow night. I hope no water pipes burst or anything like that.
Tom Overby – This is an awesome production. I have to listen to each song closely, and each time I do I pick up another instrument, horns, bells, gongs, background vocals. Is there any way I can meet Lucinda? Before or after show events? Do I need to buy passes? Let me know how to do that if its an option. Am I too late for Columbus?
October 15, 2008 at 8:40 pm #36358tntracyParticipantGot it today & just finished my first listen. Wow! What a great album. I love it. I especially love how “out front” Doug’s guitar & Lu’s vocals are. Nice mix.
Congrats to all involved – Lu, Buick 6, Tom O., and everyone else. You all deserve a big pat on the back &, if there is any justice in this cruel ol’ world, this album will be a big success for you all. My heartfelt thanks go out to Lu, Tom & the “boys in the band” for this great new material.

That was a very nice touch to make such high-quality MP3’s avaiable. The songs themselves are definitely worth hearing – I really like the version of “If Wishes Were Horses” in particular.
Like most folks, I’m not a big fan of the multiple versions concept, but at least it was executed well. Thanks to Lucinda and Lost Highway for that.
October 15, 2008 at 10:10 pm #36360parkercaParticipantHow was the version of “Jailhouse Tears”?
October 15, 2008 at 10:54 pm #36361tntracyParticipantI have a funny story about my first listen of “Little Honey”. As I posted before, I got my copy this afternoon when I got home from school (about 3:00 PM), and played it through start to finish while sitting on my sofa in the prime listening position for my home stereo system. Cranked up, of course… 😈
Well, I live in a house in a subdivision w/ 1/2 – 3/4 acre lots. We have a screened-in porch on the back, and then a big deck. On the screened-in porch, up in the corners of the ceiling on each side, I have installed two Polk Atrium outdoor speakers so we can enjoy music out on the deck. These are my “B” speakers from my receiver inside (it was easy to wire, given the layout of our house – down through the floor in the great room, across the joists in the basement, then outside & back up through the floor of the porch). I think you see where this is going… 🙂 😆
Anyway, I listened to the whole album this afternoon like I said, then went to the grocery store to get something for dinner. When I got home, I started playing the CD again for another listen. Only *then* did I notice I had *both* the inside speakers (the “A” speakers) as well as the outside ones turned on. OOPS! The ones outside get really loud as they are more efficient that the towers inside, so I had literally CRANKED Little Honey this afternoon to the whole neighborhood! 😳 😳 😳
We haven’t had any complaints, so I guess they liked it as much as I did!! 😀

October 15, 2008 at 11:32 pm #36362parkercaParticipanthaha. You might drum up some more album sales for lucinda.
Just hope and pray that your neighbors don’t blast you in return, especially if they are jonas brothers fans…. 😆

No doubt. My only saving grace may be that I played it mid-afternoon when most of my neighbors were probably at work…
Except for the retired couple right next door. I’ll think I’ll knock on their door tomorrow & apologize. 😉

The version of “Jailhouse Tears” is pretty cool, but no duet with Doug (which I imagine a lot of fans would’ve liked to hear). Lu sings all of the lines — I imagine the duet part was earmarked for later. The arrangement is a bit more mellow but has some really nice pedal steel licks. Overall, all five of the alternate tracks are a touch more mellow than their Little Honey counterparts. Not as radical as the iTunes version of “Real Love” though. 😉October 16, 2008 at 2:06 pm #36365koenParticipantGot my pre-ordered copy yesterday from Amazon, and am lisening to it now. Sounds familiar, but great songs!
IIRC, there was a link on this website that said when you pre-order, there would be a bonustrack available. Anyone knows where I can find the info on how to do that?
thanks

My understanding is Amazon will be sending pre-orderers (is that a word?) an e-mail w/ the link to download the bonus track.

October 16, 2008 at 4:09 pm #36367thoranParticipantWith all these bonus tracks being offered by different vendors, I wish I’d been a little more patient and bought a copy at Best Buy Tuesday morning. I couldn’t wait that long and bought Little Honey at 12:10 Tuesday morning when Bull Moose downtown opened!
October 16, 2008 at 7:45 pm #36368stellablueeeParticipantwish lucinda could have done this as a bonus song……hope everyone in nashvegas has a great time at the show!!!!

October 16, 2008 at 9:15 pm #36369TOverbyParticipantTom – You’re story is hilarious-and as you will see, all too familiar, which makes it even more funny. It’s raining in Nashville, and I’m just killing time on the bus, so I thought I’d share our version:
About a year a half ago Lucinda and I had just moved into a house we rented in the Silver Lake part of LA, and the owner had left a few things behind including his surround sound system -not a big one– just one that had the little 6 inch satellite speakers, but it sounded good. So the first night that Lucinda and are staying in the house, we of course were exhausted from moving etc. so we decided to watch a movie. Ours were still boxed up so we looked thru what the owner had left behind and we decided on Memoirs Of A Geisha. So we put it on and start watching it and Lucinda of course says “turn it up more” so I said okay lets see what this sucker can do. So we cranked it up pretty good and about an hour into the movie we hear someone banging on the front door. I turn it down and go to the door and without opening it I said “hello?”, and the guy starts yelling thru the door “turn down your *&%$ing stereo, I don’t need to hear your movie etc.”. Lucinda and I were pretty stunned — we looked at each other and went “it was Memoirs Of A Geisha!!! not Rambo, and then the reality set in and she got a little upset saying “see I told you we shouldn’t have moved to Silver Lake, that’s how it is over here, the houses are too close together, we’re never going to be able to play music or anything”. Not exactly the ideal first night in the new house. So we finished the movie at very low volume and called it a night, stiil a little mystified by what had transpired, because yes it was a little loud, but it just didn’t seem to the level that it would cause the neighbor to get all medeival. The next morning we got up and we’re having a cup of coffee, and i decided to check out the small deck that was off the back of the living room and next to the kitchen. As I opened the door I noticed a white dial on the wall that was separate from the light switch, and the suddenly I remembered that there were outdoor speakers mounted up above the deck. And then I had one those moments of clarity, and I said “uhhh honey I think I know what the problem was last night–did you remember that we had outdoor speakers on the deck?”
“Ohhh yeahhh that’s right”
And upon checking, the dial was cranked full on. Of course it was.
“Well I think we played Memoirs Of A Geisha for most of Silver Lake last night”
“Really?”
“Uh-huh”
:The speakers were not only on, but they were cranked up to the max”.
“Well I guess everybody liked it except the next door neighbor”.
And of course at that point we joked about putting a marquee up and having a nightly showing. We got a pretty good laugh out of the whole thing, but I don’t think the neighbor ever quite let go of it.October 16, 2008 at 9:24 pm #36370ripleyParticipantA cynical fan’s thoughts on Little Honey.
I’m sure most people around here remember my very sour reaction to West and probably are dreading my reaction to the new record. Well, even I was dreading my reaction. I was not ready to write off one of my favorite artist. Well, luckily I don’t have to. I was pleasantly surprised with Little Honey. Mostly due to the fact that I didn’t like the direction of songs like Honey Bee. I wasn’t ready for a Lucinda ROCK record because I really didn’t think it was something she was truly capable of and felt it might come of insincere.
Well, she’s very sincere here. I’ve even grown to enjoy Honey Bee. It sounds much better here than it had in earlier live versions. I think it fits within the context of the greater album at work here. That is something I didn’t like about West was that despite it’s attempt at cohesiveness it just wasn’t that at all. Too many stand outs and filler. A truly great album shouldn’t have “stand out’s” as all the songs should be worthy of praise (think Rumours).
Little Honey, reminds me very much of my first listen to Car Wheels on a Gravel Road in so far as many of the songs felt like a smooth blend. This album has a really natural flow in the same way as CWOGR. I wouldn’t say this album is in the same league as Car Wheels because it just isn’t but it has very similar qualities. This album feels like a natural progression from World Without Tears.
As for the songs, I’ve always been a sucker for the downers and so far If Wishes Were Horses is my favorite. That is a beautiful song. Definitely in the top 10 LW songs for me. I also adore Circle’s and X’s, Plan To Marry, Tears Of Joy, Real Love and Knowing. Like I said before though, this album is more about a progression of mood than song for song analysis.
I would definitely rank it above West, Essence and Sweet Old World but I don’t think it can surpass Self Titles, World Without Tears or Car Wheels. Perhaps it can in time but those three are pretty much locked in place….
