Last week, I saw Lucinda Williams at the KY Theater in downtown Lexington. She came out wearing a blue plaid shirt, an undershirt, jeans, and boots.
She walked out alone and didn’t say anything and immediately played a solo acoustic version of “Passionate Kisses.” It was beautiful, stripped down, and her voice vibrated through the entire place. I was memerized and couldn’t believe she was just mere feet away from me!!!
She then got her band together for her second song, “Are You alright?” (a personal new favorite of mine) but she commented before on
how beautiful the venue was and how she really liked playing there and something about how she hadn’t been there since 1992 but she should come more often (yay!) It was a sit-down concert, no one stood up, but Williams did receive a few standing ovations. The show was surprsigingly rocky… lots of guitar solos and jam sessions. My ears rang during “Honey Bee” and her voice sent chills down my spine during “Joy” and “Come On”. The crowd favorite seemed to be “Unsuffer Me”, people went wild afterward. It was an intense performance of the song.
Lots of shout outs for “Lonely Girls”, “Righteously”, and “Right In Time”. She ignored them all. Someone yelled out “Joy” and she said, “I’ll get to that one.” She also mentioned that she had changed her set-list up for the night… I didn’t know if it was an apology or fact since she didn’t play those three songs. She was lively, wonderful, and very relaxed. But she really drove the rockier songs home. She was … awesome. One of the best shows I’ve been to.
* = songs Lucinda & Band received standing ovations after.
01. Passionate Kisses (Solo, Guitar)
The rest of the show was performed with her full band.
02. Are You Alright?
03. Fancy Funeral
04. I Lost It
05. Jailhouse Tears (duet with guitarist)
06. Still I Long for Your Kiss
07. Pineola
08. Come On *
09. 2 Cool 2 Be 4-Gotten
10. Honey Bee
11. Unsuffer Me *
12. Real Live Bleeding Fingers
13. Joy *Said goodnight.
But came back with…
Encore:
14. Reason to Cry
15. Where Is My Love?
16. DisgustedOn a side note, the encore wasn’t as spectacular as the show prior. It was good, very good, but it did seem like Lucinda had lost a lot of the previous
energy which is understandable. I do think “Where Is My Love?” was an amazing live interpretation of the song and it moved me greatly… but I think a lot of people were bummed out that she wasn’t listening to their call-outs for “Righteously” and I noticed several people leaving during “Disgusted.” She didn’t say goodnight a second time. She basically left after “Disgusted” came to a close.July 23, 2007 at 3:32 am #32898Red Dirt Girl EHParticipantSounds like an interesting show! A different set list for sure, I would love to hear Are you Alright and Passionate Kisses live. We did, however, hear Righteously. Kind of makes you want to travel town to town and see what you missed.

I was not disappointed with the show at all… “Where Is My Love?” and “Are You Alright?” made up for anything I wanted to hear that wasn’t played. Since I’m constantly listening to her new record I would have loved to hear “Mama You Sweet”… and I did want to hear “Fruits of My Labor” live. 😥
