I was lucky enough to see Leonard Cohen in concert a couple of weeks ago in Tampa. It was a fantastic evening. He is an awesome artist.
I know that Lu is a big fan of his and I was wondering if she ever got to meet him. Would anyone know?
Don’t know the answer to that, but Lu’s “protege” Anne McCue saw Cohen (he’s mentioned by name in Anne’s great song “Stupid,” which is on some Americana samplers and a Folk compilation series, as well as on her record Roll) the other week in Nashville and was bowled over. Anne noted a caveat, however: “Nashville was the only city on the tour where the show did not sell out.”
NPR interviewed LC & LW in 1993. Lucinda was in TN and was on the show by phone, but it is excellent. They talk about poetry in music, the writing process etc.
LC is very complementary about Lu’s writing and how she mentions cities in her songs etc @ vice versa.
it’s a lovefest, fun to listen to and worth seeking out.
And it might be worth adding that in the “Artists’ Picks” series marketed through Starbucks some years back, both an Anne McCue song (“These Things”) and a Leonard Cohen song (the one about the raincoat) appear on the disc selected by Lucinda.
It warms me over every time I hear Lucinda mention Leonard in “Rarity.” The whole “Little Honey” album just absolutely blows me away, but that song may be the highlight of the whole thing.
