ParticipantThe beginning of the sample sounds very similar to Soldier’s Song.
I would love to know how many songs Lu has contributed/dueted/appeared. Certainly it has to be close to a Guinness record of some sort? 😛

Lafayette, you may recall our moderator created a thread entitled “Lu’s Guest Appearances” list quite some time ago and he was good enough to post a link to the Excel spreadsheet he created. I saved that list and it runs from 1988 partway thru 2009 and totals 72 appearances.
It seems tntracy is on a buying spree lately for Lu’s guest appearances.
I wonder if he has updated his list and can share it with us.lwj

I need to, LWJ, I need to. Thanks to you & your fantastic “linkability”, I have found several new “guest appearance” songs to download, with two more in the not-to-distant future. I need to update the Wikipedia list as well.
I will make a concerted effort to do both & will post the results when done. Deal? 😉

ParticipantI downloaded this song today from Amazon.com. It is so beautiful, it is mind-blowing.
I have this obsession with loading song lyrics in iTunes, especially for songs Lu has written and / or performed. Certainly, this song is no exception. But, since I downloaded just the one song instead of buying the CD, I do not have the lyrics in the liner notes to which to refer (assuming they are even there). And, I can not find them anywhere on the Internet.
So, at the very real risk of being made fun of for “misheard lyrics”, this is what I picked out by careful listening. I am fairly confident I got most of them correct, except for the line after “Your old black umbrella” – “Fades half in the rain” just doesn’t seem right to me, but that is what it sounds like. Also, I’m not so sure about the first four lines of the stanza that begins (at least as I heard it), “You’re every curled rose bud”.
Does any one have the definitive lyrics to point out what I got incorrect? Or, does anyone hear anything differently than I did? Thanks for any help…
I heard a siren
And you came to mind
You were the pretty part of us
I’m what’s left behind
The equation’s remainder
The last standing sign
God, I’m missing youYou’re mouth’s still so soft
Your countenance fair
Time stretches to shape you
Right out of thin air
But it can’t hold the image
If I blink you’re not there
God, I’m missing youAre you gone forever?
Are you gone for good?
Or have I gone crazy
Wishing you would?
Come ’round the next corner
Step off of that train
Your old black umbrella
Fades half in the rain
God, I’m missing youYou’re every curled rose bud
Entranced in my eye
Each turned a cold collar
And your gaze slides by
The sanded down moon
In a tar paper sky
God, I’m missing youThe night’s down to nothing
The stars have withdrawn
The horizon splits open
That silvery dawn
The ghost of your breathing
Won’t leave me alone
God, I’m missing youAre you gone forever?
Are you gone for good?
Or have I gone crazy
Just wishing you would?
Come ’round the next corner
Step off of that train
Your old black umbrella
Fades half in the rain
God, I’m missing you
God, I’m missing you
God, I’m missing youTom

ParticipantSounds to my ears “fades half in the rain” also.
Have a listen starting at the 3:30 min. to Rodney sing the song in the studio in Missoula, MT.

I think Rodney sings:
That just passed me bylwj
p.s. If Rodney and Mary weren’t on tour now, you could have asked Lefty to visit Prof. Karr at Syracuse U. for a definitive answer. 😆June 19, 2012 at 12:08 am #49303tntracy
ParticipantThis article from Mother Jones misattributes “Long Time Girl Gone By” to being sung by Lu, when it is actually sung by Emmylou Harris. I don’t see how in the world the author could get their two voices confused! 😯
“If I could cross a bridge from now to then/open up my chest and let it in/I wouldn’t fight so hard against the pain/I’d let it rain,” croons the narrator in “Long Time Girl Gone By,” sung by Lucinda Williams.

ParticipantCome on Tom, you know critics don’t actually listen to the records. That’s old school. 😮

ParticipantThe article is titled, “Songs for the People You Wanna Drag Behind Your Car” – maybe it should be retitled, “Articles by Critics You Wanna Drag Behind Your Car”… 😉

ParticipantWow -really bad -several times Rodney is referred to as Crowley instead of Crowell. Impressive editing and fact checking.

And, to add insult to injury, the author’s byline below the piece identifies her as “the research editor at Mother Jones” (emphasis added)… 😯
