I figured out early on that we were sitting too close since even the opening act was deafeningly loud. We walked in during the first set by some woman named LP who was like a one person hurricane. Loud, operatic voice and her mike was super loud so it was battle conditions early. New building, nice concert hall, booze available even though we were on a college campus but I was pinned to my seat by the noise and could not get up and go get a badly needed drink.
Lu came on at 8:35 and was not too loud and sounded great. Stuart only on the guitar. Tremendous version of Blue. Stuart burned up the frets when called upon. Lu was off at 9:20. No encore.
Stills and Kenny Wayne Shepherd and band played a bluesy set and were so loud that aircraft were being diverted around the campus so as not to fly over the show and be knocked out of the sky. KWS sure can play that guitar. Stills looked like he was going to have a heart attack at any minute. He had to scream to be heard over the guitar assault. The crowd got their money’s worth and minor brain damage. They closed with an unnecessary version of Rockin in the Free World since for KWS it was like asking Mozart to play chopsticks and Lu’s version from Pappy and Harriet’s was better anyway.
I am sorry that this is the last Lu show for a while. She had a great and busy year. The website was its usual ever-present self with myself, Stoger, Grumpymama, and Stellablueee in attendance. We travel well.

Well, I was in fact in the lobby during the songs from LP’s LP, and the sound piped in seemed moderate, very bearable. As for Stills, the only lyric I could make out during the seven-minute jam of an opener was the word “Chicago” a dozen or so times. The mix got slightly better as the evening wore on. So not only was the version of the Neil Young cover superior in the hands of Lu’s band the previous night, we learned to be grateful all over again for the monitors and fronthouse sound work of her able crew–long fled by the time the closing act started.
The supergroup did Stills’ own “Treetop Flyer” and “Love the ONe You’re with,” and the set featured covers of Muddy Waters and Elmore James.
A few Lu comments: she praised the radio station/benefit show concept both at beginning and end of her 9-song set, noting that she used to do benefits for a Houston radio station back in the day which often had its DJ’s “locked in” during their program hours. At end she said this was the second benefit she had done recently with Stills (autism being the other). Frankly, I doubt the five members of the headlining band could have come up with the station’s call letters among them. Neither Shepherd nor Stills referred to the evening’s context.
Near the end of “Drunken Angel” (the only repeat from Saturday’s set, you will have noted), the SONGBOOK toppled to the floor, but unlike the streets of West Hollywood outside the Viper Room circa 2:30 a.m. that fateful New Years Day not too many seasons ago, the pages stayed intact. Sutton was already signaling for the guitar tech to take book duty before the song ended, and all was set aright.
Some FM-savvy slob behind us must have shouted out a Grateful Dead song request a half dozen times during Lu’s 50 minute set. Real musical sensitivity there.
The person from the station who introduced Lu got very emotional, about at the point where her “15 Grammy nominations” were being touted. But that’s OK.
Yeah, I miss Doug P’s harmonica on “Drunken A,” his pedal steel on the likes of “Jackson,” and his bitsy mandolin on “People T,” but Stuart Mathis is mighty fine. Apparently Leisz was booked across town, as it were.
And now if local Los Angelenos could actually access KCSN while driving through all parts of the city; I’m told that’s a toughie. But if this is the lone station which plays Lu (source: Tom O), then hail to it.
November 4, 2013 at 5:00 pm #52350tonygKeymasterThe never-ending request was for “Friend of the Devil”. Thankfully Lu ignored him. I wish I could. Safe travels Mr. S.
November 4, 2013 at 8:36 pm #52351GrumpyMamaParticipantGreat reports guys. It was great to hang out with everyone this last weekend. I think the ringing in my ears is just now starting to subside. 😕
November 5, 2013 at 10:36 pm #52352tonygKeymasterWhat? j/k.
I know everyone is dying (dieing?) to know this: LP’s name is Laura Pergolizzi and her claim to fame to date is that her song “Into The Wild” was used in a Citi tv commercial where she is singing “somebody left the gate open” while someone is rock climbing.
So there. 8)

Diane and I had a wonderful time, and another thanks to you TonyG – introducing us to Tom O and then to Lu as well. Very gracious, all of you. We just got back to Paso, as we stayed in the Yucca Valley a couple days extra just to pluck on our guitars, relax and recover from a long drive. The Scot dog was also honored to meet you all. Huh, then we took a long drive, real pretty.
Sounds like the set at Northridge was a little less rocking, but considering the venue, a good idea. Thanks to you reporters for – your reports. Now that we’ve met, it will be easier to visualize faces with the words. And please do look us up if you come round here to sip on fermented grape juice. You can even listen to our version of World Without Tears.. Hope to see you again, Tom, Lu, Grumpymama (a real misnomer there), Stoger, TonyG and others.
November 5, 2013 at 11:26 pm #52354tonygKeymasterI’ll be up there someday! Say hi to Scottie! 😀

November 6, 2013 at 5:52 pm #52356BillGParticipantI thought the guitar player was very good, I think Lu said he was from the Wallflowers. He seemed to have a good feel for the music, especially during the Blessed/Get Right With God Segment.
The call outs for Friend of the Devil were peculiar.
The sound was incredibly loud. When the first band started the bass and drum beats felt like they were disrupting my heart rhythm. Stills and Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s solos were like machine gun bullets to the head (but mostly in a good way).
Beautiful theatre and they sold Lagunitas IPA (albeit for $8 a bottle).November 6, 2013 at 7:06 pm #52357tonygKeymasterGreat BillG. Stuart Mathis was the guitarist and he is in the Wallflowers. welcome to the forum.
