Here’s my take: june bugs and hurricanes are both drinks. When she sings “june bug vs. hurricane,” she is mulling over what drink she wants to have to try to drown out the memory of her lost lover. The song to me is all about choices, big and small. And I am always left wondering if she regrets the choice she made on the heights of that bridge.
Layered, atmospheric, dripping with Southern imagery, heart-wrenching… this is my favorite Lucinda Williams song.
This isn’t stoger punking us with a new handle?
Actually, welcome, lulover to the Friendly Forum! Stoger is our resident FF professor as an FYI. 🙂
I had no idea June Bug was a drink. Interesting take on the drinks and drowning out the memory of her lost lover. I always assumed it was rival gangs since the context of the song was inspired by Birney Imes’ book of photographs titled “Juke Joints” and several that caught Lu’s eye.
This blog (I think either I posted this in the past or another FF member did and I read it) brings up the drink choices as well.
