Though she questioned why she was the closer and twice wondered if she were “doing justice” to the songs, Lucinda finished out the Joplin tribute mightily with “Me and Bobbie McGee,” followed by “Ball and Chain.” Penultimate alphabetically, Lu went well after Carolyn Wonderland, who was listed last. The “justice” bit was a reprise of her musings a few summers back at the Gram Parsons tributes–wherein she proceeded to nail both “A Song for You” and “Sleepless Nights.” I mean, no worries, man. True, “McGee” featured a false start, the name “Kevin” uttered into the wings, the soundscape said to be too “bouncy.” The house band seemed unfazed by the restart; by the way, monitor man Kevin, tour manager Eric, and Renaissance Man Tom were the lone members of the Lu retinue to make Cleveland–all were acknowledged in the official program. And who could be surprised that a song with Baton Rouge and New Orleans references would fall to Lu to do: superb.
As the Forum knows by now, here’s the kicker: by way of third, Lu launched a newbie original, tentatively titled “Difficult Child.” Finished day of show (!)–though probably still unfinished in some sense–it was for Janis, about Janis, chock full of concrete and lyrical bio detail. We’ve not heard the last of this one I suspect; the audience was pretty hushed throughout.
Other highlights: Guy Clark and Verlon Thompson with Clark’s “She Ain’t Going Nowhere”; Susan Tedeschi with 3 sung by Joplin, including “Try”; Bettye LaVette with a Dan Penn tune plus “Piece of My Heart”; video clips of JJ on the Dick Cavett Show; a wacky live Joplin-extended family singalong (led by Bob Neuwirth) on “Mercedes Benz.”
Lucinda pondered doing “My Baby” (as opposed to “Cry Baby”) for her third, but no complaints about the original in lieu.
So I leave you with a question: what’s the next best thing to a night full of Lucinda songs from Lucinda? Why, a trilogy of Kris Kristofferson-Big Mama Thornton-Lucinda Williams songs in that same lovely voice. Of course.

I am excited about the new material from Lucinda, and Bettye LaVette doing “Piece Of My Heart” would have been good to see and hear, must try youtube later.
A more than worthy report as always, stoger. Wish we could have been there – I trust you met up with Lafayette before / after?

Per your request and lwj’s post of noted dress, Lucinda was indeed dressed in black, with sequined black top, jeans, and her Harley type boots she wore in Chicago (which I love!). No leather main accessory as I predicted. Her hair was notably highlighted. She looked lovely!
I have footage of Lucinda performing “Difficult Child.” I hope to have it up on YouTube later this evening. MY PC is dated and getting footage up is always a challenge for me but will give it a whirl later.

Aha…yes, you did predict the Bengals win lwj! I actually didn’t think they could pull it off with Pittsburgh so hot as of late and the game was in their house. I couldn’t initially tune in as, apparently, I don’t have the NFL package deal for Sirius. It was killing me on the drive home and my husband wasn’t answering the home phone for me to get updates. HOWEVER, I finally got within local range and tuned into the last 7 minutes, which proved to be the most exciting. We are happy Bengal fans savoring this last win! We’ve been long suffering season ticket holders for over 12 years, so this is a very sweet season for us. AND, to add to all this Cincinnati excitement, we are also University of Cincinnati fans and season ticket holders enjoying a 10 – 0 record for the first time in school history and a #5 ranking. WHO DEY and Go Bearcats!

Excellent… watching to vids now… I hope that someone will post a vid of Susan Tedeschi singing Janis soon…. She’s another fav of mine… Hopefully Lucinda and Susan meet and swapped ideas or something…

lwj, the game wasn’t quite the pushover as expected, however, it was a WIN and 6 – 0 in division play, first in Bengals franchise history! Bengals need to get their act together offensively, however, or we will never get past first playoff game if we make it that far. I’ll use a Mellencamp line to summarize the game…”I Ain’t Never Satisfied”
AND, to keep this thread on track, Susan Tedeschi was great. She even strapped on a guitar and played with the house band at the end of the evening band while all the artists were walking off.
