January 7, 2012 at 4:27 am #42775LafayetteParticipantA documentary following JM around during a 2009 tour opening for Bob Dylan as well as knocking out a record on his off days is chronicled by photographer Kurt Markus and his son. Select screenings in LA & NYC thru Jan 16 . I made it into the trailer(!), wearing a hat and head jamming. Don’t blink. 22 seconds in.
January 7, 2012 at 4:47 am #42776tonygKeymasterGood work Lafayette! 🙂

January 8, 2012 at 1:33 am #42778West WordsParticipantCan’t tell you how many times I watched this to try to catch you, and all I could get was a sense that I detected you subliminally. Finally FINALLY I was able to not blink and stop the tape at the right spot. Way cool! 🙂
January 8, 2012 at 3:43 am #42779LafayetteParticipantI ran into Kurt Markus, the photographer, after the show where I was filmed, in Dayton, OH and he recognized the hat, and told me he had filmed me and hoped I didn’t mind. 8) I was hoping I had made it into the film shown before JM’s shows but I was invariably cut [the girls next to me were in it]. So, yeah, it’s fun to see!
January 8, 2012 at 3:40 pm #42780LafayetteParticipantHere is an excerpt from the movie – JM recording “No One Cares About Me” with Marc Ribot, David Roe, Andy York, and TBone Burnett at Sun Studios in Memphis. Some commentary with Mark Ribot and David Roe.
January 8, 2012 at 4:00 pm #42781LafayetteParticipantClip 2 – “Coming Down The Road” at Sun Studios in Memphis.
January 9, 2012 at 4:00 pm #42782LWjettaParticipantLike West Words it took a while to find you in the video Lafayette, as I was looking for you wearing a “cheap straw cowboy hat” as you have worn in previous concerts.
I noticed a link under the video to your Mellonblog site, something I haven’t looked at in a while.
Your writing about John and all the ticket stubs in your collection is great.
I see you are now featuring weekly in your blog John’s art collection.
Do you own any of his work?, Are they on display somewhere?lwj
February 2, 2012 at 3:26 am #42783LafayetteParticipantlwj – John has some of his paintings on permanent display at an Art Center in his hometown of Seymour – Southern Indiana Center for the Arts aka SICA – a place I suspect you would appreciate.
More information on SICA ( a house he purchased from a childhood friend and converted into an art center)
> http://www.soinart.com/The media link on John’s website has photos of some of his paintings but it’s not the same as viewing them on the canvas they are painted. His early style has been described as German impressionism and my added thoughts would include “on the dark side.”

Here are 2 links from a friend’s flickr site (he’s quite the photographer). These paintings were traveling with the “No Better Than This” tour and on display in the lobby of the theaters.

February 3, 2012 at 4:52 pm #42784LWjettaParticipantWow! Lafayette, thanks so much for all the background info. on JM’s artistic sideline.
I especially liked the history of the pre Civil War house John has donated to the arts community.lwj
February 3, 2012 at 10:07 pm #42785LafayetteParticipantI had a feeling you would like the house. It’s a very serene setting. John’s junior high school art teacher works the center as a volunteer and loves visits by the Mellenheads. On the property is a barn that’s been converted into a pottery studio. In the loft area of the barn is where John’s #1 hit single, a cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night” with Meshell Ndegeocello, was filmed. The loft is appropriately named “The Wild Night” loft. There is a garden area dedicated to John’s grandmother and his mother passed away just this past Monday and there are plans to name a room after her as, she too, was an artist and very involved with the Art Center. JM’s parents’s house is nearby, the 8 room farmhouse John sang about in “Cherry Bomb.”
Here is a trivia blog I wrote about the “Wild Night” shoot with embedded video.

Oh, and I don’t own any of John’s paintings, it’s the one thing I pine to own. Sometimes one becomes available, through auctions and on ebay, etc but the $$$ needed to purchase were beyond my means. Some fans have been lucky to acquire some great deals, just hasn’t happened for me yet. I do have a few posters of his artwork and I do have an autographed lithograph I snagged on ebay which is a limited edition. I had it matted and framed.

March 23, 2012 at 5:30 pm #42789LWjettaParticipantGreat news for me Lafayette from an e-mail received today.
CANADIAN TOUR TO BE ANNOUNCED NEXT WEEK
Specifics are being worked out for a new June/July Canadian leg of the No Better Than This Tour! Watch for an announcement and ticket sales info next week.
Sure hope a concert appears near my locale and that it’s reasonably priced.lwj
March 24, 2012 at 4:08 am #42792LafayetteParticipantI’ll be up to a show (or two) as long as it’s within my 8 hour driving window. Unfortunately, I would bet ticket prices will be around the the same price range as before since it says he is continuing his No Better Than This Tour.
ALSO, super excited about the art gallery exhibit in Nashville. I plan on attending that as well!

Yup, I forgot to mention the Nashville art exhibit. Funny Lafayette, we were just discussing his art recently.
It’s an 11 &1/2 hour drive for me to Nashville-so that’s a no go.However, re: ticket prices, I know you always search out the best seats, so if we do meet again on JM’s tour I’ll just buy the cheapest ticket and wait for you to move up by the stage(a la Windsor in 2010) and claim your seat. 😆
Hey, I see from JM’s website that The Cowboy Junkies ( A Canadian Band out of Toronto since 1985) are opening for JM.
I saw them many years ago and ya’ll will enjoy their music.
There always seems to be a connection to Lucinda. i.e. They both performed on the 1999 tribute album to Gram Parsons.Let’s look at two Junkies videos.
First up is from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from way back in 1989.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtoxrBKGBCE&feature=relatedNext up a recent one from the CBC Radio studios in Toronto.

Looking forward to John’s show wherever that may be. Have to wait until March 28th for the details.lwj
p.s. Lafayette, the Cowboy Junkies are heading to the 20th Century Theatre in your Cinci town on April 24th.
