LA forum peeps should know John Doe is having a record release show at the Grammy Museum this Wednesday 8/31 at 8 pm. I’ve never been there and I don’t know how many people it holds or if its standing room or what. Anyway I look forward to the show.

I’ve seen JD in St. Louis at Off Broadway, also multiple times opening for Lu few summers back. Should your beverage intake lead toward shouted requests, you could do a lot worse than “Twin Brother,” a lovely slow show-stopper.
August 29, 2011 at 7:15 pm #48111tonygKeymasterAwesome. I will see if they have it on tap. The guitarist accompanying Mr. Doe is someone well known to this forum. 😉
August 29, 2011 at 10:10 pm #48112tonygKeymasterI have since learned that there is a performance space called the Clive Davis Theater. 200 seats. Looks ultra awsome in the pictures. If that’s where the show is it will be awesome.
Apparently its a release party for his latest CD, Keeper, that has many cool people on it like Cindy Wasserman and Jill Sobule. It would be great if they were there.

Val McCallum and/or Don Was ?
Here’s a video interview on the new album plus some songs from the Bing Lounge.

Well, just as a point of clarification, “Twin Brother” is the name of a John Doe song off of the record he was promoting when he opened for Lu, not a brand of draft (in case we got our wires crossed here, tony, not sure if you were joking). Drink a brand of your choice, THEN shout out the title to him.

I wonder if it’s as tasty as “Little Angel, Little Brother” Pale Ale… 😆

August 30, 2011 at 9:08 pm #48117tonygKeymasterHilarious. I did think he was talking about beer. And to further illustrate the fog I was in, I have seen John Doe perform Twin Brother before, at McCabes. Great song.
Plus I don’t think they serve booze at this place anyway but we shall see.
September 1, 2011 at 2:33 pm #48124tonygKeymasterTremendous evening with John Doe at the Grammy Museum last night. The evening started off at 8 pm with a 30 minute question and answer with just John and producer Joe Henry on the stage. They talked for about 25 minutes, then 5 minutes of audience questions. John is a very amusing and personable guy so this was entertaining.
At 8:30 the band came out and they played the entire new CD, called Keeper. Doug Pettibone on electric guitar and lap slide, D.J. Bonebrake on drums, Ryan Feves on upright and electric bass, a keyboard player whos name escapes me, and Cindy Wasserman and Jill Sobule alternating on vocals. The auditorium seated 200 in a plush setting. The sound was good and loud. Great record. After the show I waited in the world’s longest line to buy the CD and have John sign it. He chatted with every single person who was there and was still very pleasant and patient by the time I got to him. I am impressed by this.
I saw from the CD when I got home that Val McCallum plays on several songs, as does Greg Leisz.
Before the show I got something to eat at an Italian place across the street. All I wanted to do was watch some of the baseball game and have a drink. Broken TV, no booze for some unexplained reason although there was a bar there, and some guy started jackhammering in the rest room just as I started eating and it never stopped.
It was great to see Doug and his girlfriend Liz. He looked great and played a mean guitar. He is the world’s busiest session guitarist, in addition to being in Marianne Faithfull’s band. I was also pleased to see famed website member Paul from Los Angeles, who made the scene as expected. I knew Paul would not miss an appearance by Cindy Wasserman.
I love getting 5 hours sleep on a worknight.

…Are you sure you weren’t in Syracuse, tony?
September 1, 2011 at 3:56 pm #48119tonygKeymasterI have a talent for finding the worse possible place Lefty. It may have well been Syracuse.
September 1, 2011 at 4:13 pm #48120LafayetteParticipantGreat indepth report, Tony! It’s always happening in LA or NYC.

Above mention could be misconstrued. 😆
September 1, 2011 at 4:23 pm #48121stogerParticipantLafayette, what a sewer of a mind you have there 😀 Wow, all that plus “famed” Paul in the audience: Sweet. I’ve heard good things about Doug’s girlfriend Liz (good genetics there I think) and of course it was a nice surprise to hear he played with Doe and hit those licks. I envy you guys that evening, as much as or more than I envy the [of course) wind.
September 1, 2011 at 4:24 pm #48122tonygKeymasterGood point Lafayette. I will add that he was a plumber and he was using a jackhammer. 🙄
