Jackshit at McCabe’s 12/14/12

I braved the rains and unbearable Friday night traffic to attend Jackshit’s Have a Shitty Christmas show at McCabe’s last night. Sold out crowd. The fellers were in their usual good humor and the country cornpone act entertained the crowd. They kept it light at the beginning but as the special guests appeared they changed into rock mode and played up to the talents of their guests. Website songstress Lu sat in for 3 songs: Still I long For Your KIss, Happy Woman Blues, and Somebody Loan Me a Dime. She was in great voice and in fine spirits. Dave Alvin sat in for 3 songs I think and set the place on fire with his electric guitar playing and unique voice. If there is a better guitar player than this guy, I don’t want to know about it. Albert Lee had the unenviable task of following Dave and all he did was burn up the guitar frets as only he could for 2 songs. Val rose to the occasion when Dave and Albert each played and showed what a great guitarist he is. By the end of the night he was wailing away like crazy.

I wanted to get my CDs signed by Jackshit but they never appeared where the common folk were waiting. I did take the opportunity to pester Albert Lee at length and he was nice enough to stand there all night and talk to anyone who wanted to. I told him we were from the same home town, just different countries, as he is from Leominster England and I am from Leominster Mass. He managed to remain calm during this news bulletin.

I nominate McCabe’s as the site of a Lu solo show at some point in the next year. Maybe a 5 night engagement, each night having one or more of her local pals sitting in. I am full of good ideas. Some bad ones too. But mostly good, really.
