She sure looks like it. BUT – how do you explain the crappy vocal performance? Each song was delivered with very clipped vocals. Like my wife said, it sounded like she just wanted to get it over with as soon as possible. We’ve seen her a couple times here in Seattle and always enjoyed her shows. If I’d paid to see this performance, I would have been VERY disappointed! If she’s NOT pregnant, given her physical condition and the vocal delivery on this show, I wonder if she has some sort of substance abuse problem…

Well that was taped back in September, so if she was “showing” at all back then, I would think it’d be pretty obvious by now, but i’m not sure when her last show or public appearance was. She’ll be 55 in a month though (right?), so seems unlikely she’d be pregnant. Maybe she’s just put on a few lbs. I know I have as I’ve gotten a little older…. 😥

As for the performance, tv gigs have never been Lu’s specialty. Her showings on Jay Leno and David Letterman earlier this year were spotty at best. ACL is a little less stifling than those gigs, but it’s still different than a “regular” concert vibe, so maybe she just wasn’t as into it as she is her normal shows.

I thought it was fine. Honey Bee and Joy really rocked, but I do get tired of seeing Lu look at her notebook for damn near EVERY SINGLE LINE she sings! Particularly on an older song like “Righteously”. She should know that one in her sleep by now, but judging by how often she look down, I think I might know the words to that song better than she does….

Whatever, Lu is still the bomb.

First of all -no Lucinda is not pregnant.

Everyone certainly is allowed to their opinion, but I sometimes wonder if someone is watching the same show. Of course having been there and having seen the entire show may make me biased. But for what its worth I can tell you that everyone there that night left feeling they had seen something special. And by everyone I mean not just the audience, but also the staff at the ACL who thought it was not only Lucinda’s best show ever there, but one of the best shows they had had there in a very long time.
Yes, she has been uncomfortable in the past with TV shows, but on this night she got past it and got on a roll. ACL had allotted for a set of 90 minutes, but the show hit such a momentum that they just let her keep playing and the set ended up being over 2 hours, so I don’t think she was very anxious to get it over with.
I know for a fact that it was very difficult for Lucinda’s people to have to cut it down to a half hour, and inquiries were made about expanding it to an hour, but it couldn’t happen. Unfortuantely, as a result a lot of great performances hit the cutting room floor.
And lastly, and most importantly, (given that I have seen that question asked elsewhere in this forum), Lucinda does not have a substance abuse problem, and never has- as some people here may know she has lost friends to substance abuse (and has written about it) and is actually quite horrifed of anybody doing anything worse than pot. She drinks nothing but red wine anymore, Cabernet to be exact. And never before a show, especially when its going to be on what is basically national TV.
So hopefully we can set the record straight once and for all on that topic- but unfortunately that is probably not the case.

I think the way the show was edited down to 5 songs did not put Lucinda in the best light. I thought everyone sounded great but it was hard not to be disappointed with only 30 minutes.

Hopefully we can all see the entire show on DVD.

She has got to be too old to pregnant. She’s going to be 55 next month!!

The ACL performance was awful. Period. I’ve seen her live a number of times and she was outstanding every time. I don’t know what happened in Austin.

Thanks for the comments, Inside Job.

As a part time professional musician myself, I speak from personal experience…it’s hard to get the “mojo workin” if you’re only playing a short set.

I didn’t see this last ACL show, so I can’t comment on the performance, but even in the first ACL show, which I have on DVD, Lucinda didn’t play the more “risque” type songs, simply because of the nature of the situation.

This alone can affect the perception of the performance in some viewers eyes, as Lucinda is not able to play whatever her heart desires. She has to tone it down somewhat for the studio audience.

I hope to catch the show on the 29th, but I tend to agree with, and trust, your analysis.

    Merry Christmas Eve everyone!

I’ve been a huge Williams fan since I first heard “Passionate Kisses,” and I’ve tracked her career religiously ever since. I just got done watching the new ACL show, and I’ve read much of the commentary here on same. Here’s my two cents:

–Yes, she’s put on some weight. At 55, people do tend to do that. I’m sure everyone here is as twiggy as they were in high school, or after they finished their latest Jenny Craig cycle. Get over it, please.

–the lyric-sheets…I have to admit, it’s a little distracting. I’m not a musician myself, but I have a great memory for lyrics, and could sing most of her songs from memory myself. Really off-key, and awful, but I know the words. But, I could never write those words, or put them to music like she does, or sing them from the gut the way she does, that so often brings a tear to my eye. So, if it works for her, I can deal.

–Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the full ACL taping? This 30-minute set was painfully short!

–Love the band she played with, this time around. I’ve always loved it when she used a harder-edged sound, and these guys were making the guitars squeal in a way that warmed my heart. Which is another reason why I want more of this show.

I was out of town when she came through Detroit this year, and I can see I missed a really strong live ensemble. Drat!

Looking forward to whatever Lucinda comes up with next. Hope it’s not too long.

I started listening to Lucinda back in the mid to late 80’s and have seen her on many occasions, from Seattle’s Folk Life Festival to Austin’s ACL Festival.

I think before one criticizes Lucinda’s “physical condition” and/or “vocal delivery” one needs to be a medical doctor and/or a music critic. I think that only fair.

On another topic and one infinitely more worthy of discussion.

“but the show hit such a momentum that they just let her keep playing and the set ended up being over 2 hours”

Only begs the question, when can we find it on DVD?

    We love you Lucinda!

I must admit it seems odd to me that you cannot put any critical stuff on on the forum about the shows or the revolving door that seems to exist for band members without provoking threats and abuse, yet Lu’s Weight and fertility are open season?

I came over all British when I saw the main question and even more so when I read about the allegations of substance abuse and guesses about weight fluctuation.

In any other published form litigation could result so whilst it is to the credit of Lu’s operation that they let it be am I alone in finding it just plain rude? What next – questions about Lu’s toilet habits?

One of the things I like about Lu is that she presents herself “as is” doesn’t pretend to be immune to life’s imperfections. In Columbus she had a few false starts and you know, that endeared her to me even more. It is true that once she gets into a set, there’s no stopping her. I will never forget her performance of “UnSuffer Me” that night. She gives her body and soul to her audience.

I absolutely LOvE the “love handles” she has developed.

Pregnant! absolutely absurd and insulting. Everyone knows that you NEVeR asks a woman if she’s pregnant 😡
