Tom: You may have to exercise some patience with “The Mountain.” It took me more than a few times to start appreciating it.

After listening to The Mountain a few times straight through now, I agree that it grew on me, Lefty. However, in my case, I liked it right off with the first listen, and grew to like it more & more with each subsequent listen. I love Erica’s inflection & intonation when she sings – really cool, IMHO.

Erika’s approaching the Chrissie Hynde look with her hair in her eyes – – another inch longer and she’s there!

Yup I saw them on Lettterman the night of the 10th. I didn’t recognize her with her new hairdo.

Has Erika won your heart, yet, tony? Or, are you playing hard to get? 😉 😯 🙄

I wished I hadn’t seen your thread on the Heartless Bastards Lefty.

Now I’ve gone out and searched their music for the first time and saw them on Letterman last week.
Just bought their new CD “The Mountain”- Love it.

And I just spent $23.00 from Live Nation on a ticket to see Erika and the group performing in Detroit on April ist. appearing with The Gaslight at St. Andrews Hall. Any info on the Gaslight?

Again Lefty, you are even costing me more $ as Detroit is about a 4 hour drive from where I live in Ontario near Niagara Falls-hotel bill plus 1/2 day off work.

Erika sounds a bit like Janis joplin to me.-a real throaty sound.

Glad to have you moderating Lu’s forum.

You’re helping the US economy, LWj! Saw Erika & Co. open for Lu a couple of years ago in Albany, NY (as did Tim and maybe a few others around here) – – I’ll wager that she won’t disappoint you. If you haven’t already, spend even more $$ and get “Stairs and Elevators” and “All This Time.” I’m not familiar with The Gaslight, but maybe one of our Friendly Forum colleagues can fill you in (Tim or stoger or paul from los angeles or Disco Stu perhaps?). Glad to meet a new HBs enthusiast!

SXSW: Go Big or Stay Home
By David Carr (NY Times blog)

“Some people freeze when they get their big shot here and others just step up and take it.”
    – Louis Black, a founder of South by Southwest

It’s a safe bet that many of the people at the stage behind Stubb’s last night were waiting for the Decemberists, who came to the event sponsored by NPR with a promise to debut their new album, “Hazards of Love,” a folk opera, in its entirety. But more than 2,000 people got a treat they perhaps weren’t expecting. The Heartless Bastards, a great rock band with an even greater singer, Erika Wennerstrom, took the stage and knocked everybody down. The Ohio band recently moved to Austin and it’s gotten mighty comfortable, playing the kind of set that landed with as much impact at the back of the throng as in front. The last time I saw the Heartless Bastards, they played to about 75 people at Maxwell’s in New Jersey, and Ms. Wennerstrom seemed taken aback by the faithful pressing in around her.

Not last night. A tiny figure behind a giant guitar, she stepped up and sang in a way that could make bloggers weep, then check their thesauri. I won’t fall into that trap, but I will reach for the dreaded analogue in rock history. The only singer I can remember who could find something that sounded both ancient and new is Patti Smith. Holding forth at the biggest gig of the night, Ms. Wennerstrom used a declarative instrument that pleads but does not beg. She is her own darn thing.

    THAT’S MY GIRL! 8)

Does LU know about your “other” woman????

I was out running errands today, listening to my favorite NPR station. FIRST, they were on World Cafe Live today. They archive, as I’m sure you are aware, if you missed it. I missed it myself. Then, the afternoon host played “The Mountain.” I’m in Cincy, their “old” hometown, and the music host, of course, was chattering about them. They are playing a club next week, March 25, as their CD release party. Can’t make it, will be on my way home from a short trip, maybe Stevarino can pick up the slack on that. He then went on to say they are also doing an “In Store” at an indie record club, Shake It Records. Apparently, the owner told the music host the HB new CD has been a HUGE seller, copies flying off the shelves.

SO, Stevarino and I have been lobbying to get Lu here. I say have “The Heartless Bastards” open (once again) for Lu at PNC Pavillion, a 4,000 seat ampitheater on Riverbend Music center grounds in Cincy. I seriously think LU would have no problem selling tickets to a show here in Cincy, even 4,000 seats, and WNKU would sponsor it.

Oh, yeah, after “The Mountain” was played, 11 songs later, “Long Way to The Top” was spun.

I would have gotten some pics for you, Lefty. However, I’ll be on a return flight from a short getaway trip.
