I can’t head south to Macon so I suppose the next best thing is to head south to WNKU studios tomorrow afternoon. I was invited to the “secret show” for being a volunteer at the studio. Stevarino, I doubt now I will go to Southgate House. Lefty, I will pass along your regards to Erika.
A special request Lafayette, for your studio visit this afternoon.
Can you bring along your trusty Kodak and possibly tape one of Erika’s new songs, that is if it’s ok with your favorite DJ ?Enjoy the performance.

July 30, 2011 at 1:57 pm #36867LWjettaParticipantSince Lafayette was planning on attending the “secret” show on Thursday at WNKU’s studios and skipping Southgate House that evening, here is a great review from Southgate House.

July 30, 2011 at 5:14 pm #36868LafayetteParticipantI made the ‘secret’ show with minutes to spare after hoofing it across campus from the studio, where I thought the show was scheduled. The station is trying to expand its events across campus and utilized the student union buildin. Will teach me to read my emails more thoroughly. 😮
The show was actually broadcast on the station (I should have guessed) as a question and answer sesssion with performances inbetween. Erika took the stage, along with her band sans drummer– therefore the acoustic show billing– in an ivory tank top, daisy duke shorts, turquoise necklace, wedge heels. It was very hot Wednesday, my car thermometer registering 102 degrees at various points on my 40 minute drive, but averaging a cool 98 degrees for most of the duration of the trip.
Videotaping was not allowed but still photos with no flash was allowed. I will post a few shortly. The station was filming the show. I suspect videos will pop up of select songs on WNKU’s YouTube channel along with some sort of podcast, either in full or snippets.
Erika talked about her move to Austin (four years now), how she has been listening to country music more since her move, gravitating toward Ray Price. The new album has been recorded with an expected release date beginning first of year. The working title at present is “Arrow.” They are doing a short run of shows to play the new material. She said their van just turned over 200,000 miles .
She played several new songs — “The Arrow and The Beast” and another I forgot to write title down but really liked —something about bare bones.
They are recording a soundtrack for a movie and after this short run of shows are returning to work on it.
She said at one point she will always consider Cincinnati home and it was good to be back.
The Skyline chili question came up, a Cincinnati favorite, and she said her guitar player took a picture of a cheese coney earlier in the day with his phone, posted it to FB and had 15 comments about the post. 🙂
The broadcast was 45 minutes in length.
I spoke to Erika afterwards but only briefly. I told her I actually discovered her on Lu’s forums and had bumped into her at Lu’s wedding (even with her being a local band at one time 😳 ). I had people waiting behind me so I left it at that.
Great opportunity to see her and the band — with no one chatting during songs!

July 31, 2011 at 4:14 am #36871LafayetteParticipantGood job lwj. Someone must have gone rogue with video recording. 😉 Good recording, but I dont think those are official. 😮
The one new song I liked, from set list and video recording is “Skin and Bones” and it looks like I didn’t have my ears tuned in quite right as the other new song is “The Arrow Killed The Beast,” according to Mercury Lounge setlist…not “The Arrow and the Beast.” 😆

Southgate House- I need to get there more often than I do. I think first half of next year will be a slow year for some of my main artists, perhaps Southgate will be seeing a little more of me.
November 5, 2011 at 6:35 pm #36879LWjettaParticipantA new interview with Erika.
The new CD “Arrow” is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day, 2012.
Here is an excerpt from the interview.Another random question I have is, what is the strangest display of affection a fan has ever shown you?
Well, this one might be kind of a long story, but on the first album, I have a song called “Onions”. And one of the lines in it is “you’ve got me wrapped up in this mess again.” And a fan thought that I said “you’ve got me wrapped up in The Smiths again,” and he’s a really big Morrissey fan, so he created a bust of Morrissey, a miniature, kind of the size of an action figure, like a miniature wax bust of Morrissey, and brought it to me. And then he told me, we shared a mutual love of The Smiths and I’m like “what are you–what are you talking about?” And then he explained that to me and I was like, “I’m sorry, but that’s not the line I’m actually saying”. But then the next time we went–he lived in L.A., and the next time we played there he brought me the chef’s hat, you know, like to start assembling, and coming to each show and bringing me another piece of Morrissey until I’ve finally completed a Morrissey action figure.
So that’s pretty strange. Here is the entire interview.
