The following paragraph appears on the Facebook pages for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, and the Slim’s music venue (333 11th Street, San Francisco). Process the words with the proper cautions, wisdom, diligence, and skepticism, that are prudently advised for Facebook messages.
“Alright folks, here’s the deal – we’re having a super exclusive, mega-fan only, post-HSB show with Lucinda Williams on Sunday, October 5th at Slim’s. So exclusive, in fact, that the only way you can get tickets is to write a personal note detailing your favorite Lucinda Williams music experience and send it to info@slimspresents.com. Our judges will read your response and if you pass the test, you will be provided with the ability to buy 2 tickets maximum to be claimed via will call only on the night of show. Special preference will be given to those who can prove they attended the last Lucinda show at Slim’s in 1998. This is not a joke, that really is how you get tickets, so get going! —”
September 26, 2014 at 2:24 pm #53601Mike_DoranParticipantNot sure if anyone else is attending HSB, but I am really looking forward to it!
I emailed a note and am hoping to get a chance to buy a ticket to the Slims gig.
I’m traveling down by myself, and if I were to be so fortunate as to get the opportunity to buy one of these golden tickets, would be happy to pick the other one up if someone also needed just one..
MikeOctober 1, 2014 at 10:31 pm #53602vmorrisParticipantThanks to stoger for the head’s up about Slim’s! I just got the happy news that my Lu essay landed two tickets 🙂 They asked for a single favorite Lu musical experience, but I didn’t have just one, so I ended up handing in a 3-page essay. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing, right?
SamishSeaMike, I’m sure you will receive tix as a Lu fan of the highest order (especially if you included a picture of your Lu tattoo!), but if something unexpected happens, I would rather my second ticket go to a true fan (from Seattle, my hometown, no less!) than one of my drunken Bay Area friends (not that there’s anything wrong with that – ha). 🙂 Hope to meet you at Slim’s, Viv
October 2, 2014 at 9:10 am #53603Mike_DoranParticipantViv, thanks so much for the offer, but I also learned today that my essay , including pic ; ) enabled me the opportunity to pick up a pair. Similarly, if any forum member needs one, let me know and I would be happy to pass it along..
Arrived this evening and I am looking forward to the shows!
October 2, 2014 at 6:43 pm #53604paul_from_losangelesParticipantAs of this moment (11:35 AM PDT, Oct. 2), Slim’s is now selling tickets to this show, on their website only. Will-call only, no hard tickets, you must enter the venue immediately from will-call.

Apparently, the earlier “the only way you can get tickets is to write a personal note” has been modified.
Opening act is Rose’s Pawn Shop.October 3, 2014 at 12:00 am #53605stogerParticipant@SamishSeaMike wrote:

I didn’t even send in an essay, and was rewarded with a pair. . . *
* just kidding, of course–I think, from their emails, that the prose styles of both mike and viv are first-rate.

We’ll that’s over…
TWO Lucinda concerts in the next few days..!!!October 3, 2014 at 2:50 pm #53607stogerParticipant@SamishSeaMike wrote:

TWO Lucinda concerts in the next few days..!!!Oh, my Lu acquaintance Christina from the Bay Area also got the good word–the third winner, as it were. But her partner Tom hasn’t heard yet, proving definitively that Slim’s isn’t throwing freebies at any old prose stylist.

October 6, 2014 at 2:21 pm #53609stogerParticipantDid anyone attend? Setlist?
October 6, 2014 at 4:14 pm #53610Mike_DoranParticipantI had ONE job…..
Took the time to take notes on the set list at HSB … Only to find it was already posted here from being streamed online… Last night, I was too wedged in( front row stage Mathis) to attempt. Someone next to me took a pic of Stuarts set list copy… And then posted it to twitter BEFORE the concert… I will track a list down now 😐
Steve Earl joined in as did Colin Linden (Rodeo kings) . Always a good time when Lu has guests join in.
She come onstage about 10:05 ( a few attendees grew vocally impatient) and ended right about 11:50.
Started the set with Blessed, and I will (find) and post complete set list soon.. MikeOctober 6, 2014 at 6:39 pm #53611tonygKeymasterI have it on good authority that famed website member Stellablueee will post a set list post haste.

Love the couple of references I read regarding “cranky old dudes” at the show…
There were a lot of younger fans trying to push their way towards the front, perhaps thinking they were still at HSB which is kind of standard operating procedure there, only to be denied here…
And I wasn’t cranky… 😀
October 8, 2014 at 3:35 pm #53613LWjettaParticipantHere’s a ticket winning email for Slim’s
n Open Letter to Lucinda Williams
A friend recently wrote this letter in response to a Lucinda Williams ticket giveaway at Slim’s in San Francisco. (She won the tickets, in case you were wondering.) Anyone who knows and loves Lucinda will enjoy reading this.

To the Slims crew,There is no musician that I love more religiously than Lucinda Williams. I’ve followed her from festival to festival and seen her over a dozen times in the last ten years. Part of why she is so amazing is that she’s an unpredictable perfectionist which can make for some memorable experiences.
Like the wind blowing away her sheet music at Austin City Limits, followed by a good old fashioned, only Lucinda can get away with it, meltdown.
Or the first time I heard her play Blessed at the Mountain Winery when she started, messed up, and started over — which meant she blew past the hard stop time and had the plug pulled on her performance.
Or the time that she told the audience that Vince Gill had just died. After hearing the gasps of the crowd, her bass player came over and gently reminded her that it was Vic Chesnutt not Vince Gill.
But my all time favorite moment was about eight years ago at the Fillmore. I had managed to work my way right up to the stage so she was only a few feet from me. She was wearing a plain white button up blouse and as she played, the strap of her guitar kept working one of the buttons loose. In between songs she’d button it up, and when the song was over it would be unbuttoned again. It was the kind of wardrobe irritation that folks deal with all the time… Not obvious, just annoying. And watching her work her way through the set, fixing it each time, humanized her to me. In that moment, I connected with the person that lives a life offstage, as opposed to just admiring the phenomenal artist and performer that makes music that I love.
I definitely want these tickets to see what I’m sure will be an amazing performance. But I also want them because I’d love another chance to have a moment like that.
Sincerely
Leahlwj
October 8, 2014 at 9:54 pm #53614stellablueeeParticipantwell I don’t ever write down setlists anymore/not a good reviewer like y’all, BUT, I did this time, just for Tony.
I got home late last night & this is the first chance I’ve had to post this (I tried from my phone, twice the morning after the show, had everything typed and poof, it was gone…very frustrating)
The show was really great/high energy. Dave, Butch & Stuart seem to really be enjoying themselves… sounding tight and enthusiastic. It comes across and everyone I was around was really digging every song. My friend Lynne caught Lucinda as she arrived in a limo, was able to shake her hand and tell her how much she/we appreciate Lucinda sharing her inner soul with us all. That made her so very happy as she’s been a fan of Lu’s from the beginning……Here’s the set list:
Blessed (sure made me miss GrumpyMama)
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Crescent City
Drunken Angel
Something About What Happens When We Talk
Cold Day In Hell (loved this/my first live listen)
Overtime
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Everything But the Truth (another first time live for me-loved it)
Are You Down (by all accounts the mind blowing song of the night-Stuart Mathis ruled on this. Lucinda was really digging her cohorts from the side of the stage. Made us all happy! If mama ain’t happy…..)
Protection
Out of Touch
Change the Locks
Unsuffer Me
Essence
Disgusted
Get Right with God
Joy (Steve Earle really gave it up on this. Was fun watching Steve & Stuart swap guitars. Since Steve entered Slim’s by going through the massive crowd, I’m guessing both guitars were Stuart’s)
Honeybee
Hard Time Killing Floor Blues (joined by Colin Linden) -
