Don’t know if anyone else on this forum has discovered this web site, but it offers live music from their archives from literally hundreds of artists.
All you have to do is register with your e-mail address and a password to listen.(You will get a weekly reminder about up coming concerts in your e-mail-no big deal).
Some of the artists in the vault that have been discussed on this forum are:
Ani DiFranco, Dawn Landes,Emmylou Harris, Justin Townes Earl, Heartless Bastards, John “Cougar” Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Patti Smith, Pieta Brown, Ramblin”Jack Elliot, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson.
Search their vault archives and you will see a complete listing of concerts by performer.

Here is a link to one of Emmylou Harris first live concert from the New Victoria Theatre in London England November 25 , 1975 as a sample.

This is really a treasure house of concerts.

p.s. Sorry, no Lucinda Gayl Williams in the vault

I love Wolfgang’s Vault. Another great site for free live concerts is:

    archive.org

They’ve got old books scanned into .pdf format, audio books, a live music section with thousands of shows, the wayback machine that allows you to access defunct web pages, and lots more.

Hayes Carll, Hem, Hank Williams 3, Andrew Bird, on and on. Click on “live music archive” and then “browse artists with mp3’s” Yep, it’s almost overwhelming.

You can stream the show to see if you enjoy it prior to downloading. Also have a lossless file area. No ads either. Great website.

    Thanks so much vinylfan.
Just a huge library of great music.
I was pleased to see each artist granting permission for their music to be freely shared.

I’m glad you enjoy the site lwj. A person could spend most of their lives checking out music on there. I’ve always wondered if Lucinda would allow such a thing? I think it comes down to record contracts. Particular labels will not allow artists to post live shows. One can only hope though.

One more site that DOES have a lot of Lucinda, Guy Clark, Townes, Tom Waits, etc.

The berlin show from 2003 is “off the hook” as they say….

    Keep spreading the musical love.

The Berlin show is the LW best concert tape out there. It is a tape of the radio broadcast of the show.

Wolfgang’s Vault is cool but I’m not into mp3s really.

At the risk of being off thread, I hear you on the mp3’s. Ever looked at the wave form of a crappy mp3? Top and bottom gone – chopped off. As my name (vinylfan) suggests, I still prefer my “fully manual” turntable.

I actually like looking at the old posters, pix etc. on the wolfgangs vault. Bill Graham had/has one hell of a collection.

Your dead right about vinyl. It has a quality that can’t be found in digital form. Unfortunately, it is hard to play albums in the car.

    Tongue planted firmly in cheek….
Hard, but not impossible. I’ve seen these 45 rpm players in old vehicles at car shows but never actually heard one. Hope it’s a smooth road and the day is not hot….

Interesting discussion of varying qualities of differing music recording formats! I suppose I lie somewhere in the middle on the “vinyl / analog recordings” to “low bit rate MP3s” spectrum. While I am admittedly waaay too lazy to listen to vinyl (getting up to flip or exchange an LP every 6 or so songs, cleaning, using a de-static gun, etc. – all things I used to do back in the day), I also hate low bit-rate MP3s for their lack of dynamic range & depth of sound. But I do absolutely LOVE the ability to carry literally hundreds & hundreds of albums in my pocket or car on my iPod.

For commercial studio & live albums, I much prefer to purchase the CD & rip / encode to MP3 / ACC myself, allowing me to go back & rerip & re-encode to a higher bit rate when I upgrade to newer iPods w/ more / larger memory / hard disk. With my current 120 GB iPod Classic, my “standard” bit-rate is 256 kbps, with Lu’s music “honored” with 320 kbps. These sound very good / acceptable to me, even when streamed wirelessly from my iMac or Macbook Pro to one of my home audio systems. (And I like to think I have somewhat of a discerning ear, albeit admittedly not as discerning as the vinyl – and tube amps! – crowd).

Back on the topic of live music bootlegs, I really don’t care at all for MP3 versions that someone else encoded themselves, especially the lower (less than 256 kbps) bit-rates. What I prefer is the FLAC (Free, Lossless Audio Codec) format – not only so I can encode them myself to the bit-rate of my choice, but also so I can do my own editing if I so choose. Call me anal, but I have a hang-up with how some people place the arbitrary track break in between live tracks (probably because i often listen to music on my iPod “shuffled”). Many people seem to prefer to put the track break right at the beginning of the actual song – even if there are introductory remarks about the track beforehand (like Lu’s shows often have). This results in those remarks being at the end of the previous track. Thus, when listening to shuffled tracks, I’d hear, for example, Lu performing “Car Wheels On a Gravel Road” following by introductory remarks for “Out Of Touch” before skipping to a completely different track! So, with FLAC, I can first convert those to AIFF, then use audio editing software (I use Amadeus Pro) to move introductory comments to the beginning of their corresponding tracks, then encode to MP3 / AAC for listening in iTunes or on my iPod. I know this sounds like a lot of work, but I enjoy the process…

To cut to the chase, while I recognize and appreciate the superiority of analog recordings on a fine audio system, the convenience of (lightly!) compressed digital audio represents a more than reasonable compromise in my mind.

P.S. Cool “mobile” turntable pics, vinylfan!

    Tom,

archive.org has a lossless file section / area. Most, I believe, are FLAC files. Instead of hitting the “browse artists with mp3’s” link, hit the “Search for Lossless-Only Recordings (No-MP3)” or “Search for Some 24-bit FLAC Recordings”. There’s a pile of those as well.

I have the same problem with mp3’s and song cuts.

Pardon me, but you don’t seem lazy at all. That’s a fair amount of work, but fun I imagine.

My particular lineage is a pro-ject turntable > pro-ject tube box > tuner > Griffin USB Imic > Macbook > CD Spin Doctor. I record the vinyl on one track. Then go back in Spin Doctor and track out the songs. I save a copy of the uncompressed stuff on an external hard drive and convert to 320 kbps as necessary. I enjoy the hell out of it, don’t have to buy both vinyl and c.d., and I can listen to the analog any time I’m at home.

I’d like to contribute to archive.org as I’ve got the capability to hook my laptop up to a soundboard… Sometime in the future.

Glad you liked the pics and enjoy the lossless files in the archive!

😀 There is a great download of a Warren Zevon concert on Wolfgangs vault. I believe it was 9.99. Very good recording. You can listen to it by song before purchasing it. Get LW back out on the road-To Nashville!

Ya’ll have my head spinning from all the tech talk.

I’m familiar with Wolfgang’s but never realized archive had files. Will have to “check it out.” Thanks VF and lwj!

    Kyle –

Thanks for the heads up on the uncompressed stuff on archive.org – I’ll have to check it out.

And, sounds like you’ve got a good system for converting your analog music to digital – best of both worlds!

    Tom
