Well done, Paul. Actually, the “pause” was more long than short, almost 5 minutes, as the staff handed out champagne to patrons and Butch served as ad hoc MC. There was a projected clock and “countdown” over curtain back of stage. Basically, Lucinda stalled before starting the Wilson Pickett cover pretty much right at midnight–not without mentioning our president elect and uttering the phrase “Shit Happens.” There was also a break between song 17 and the four encore tunes.

After song two, Lu called it “one of those early, innocent songs.”

Before song seven, she surveyed some of the mishaps of the previous nights, but with a good spirit.

Some idiot’s party whistle drowned out her intro to “Protection,” which I think was a feeble joke about the title word not meaning condoms.

“Unsuffer Me” she called her “theme song,” going on to thank all for coming out tonight like the airlines thank folks for choosing them, considering Patti Smith and others were in town. She also apologized for trying a couple of “bad jokes” tonight.

    Thanks to everyone.

    From T.O.:
Well that was a lot of fun. In Lu’s words sh said “I think that was the New Years that i’ve ever had”. Pretty much says it all. Kind of nice to usher out 2016 -and kick off 2017, with one of the best shows of the year. The set was written so it would build thru the entire night and Lu and the band were on fire and the momentum was unstoppable. We hope everyone had as good of a time as we did, not just last night but this entire week. We always want every show to be different, especially when we do these multi-night stands. By my rough count we did 54 different songs over the four nights so I think we accomplished that. Thank you to all the wonderful people at the Space who did everything first class-and thank you so much Chicago for also being so great to us this year —including the 3 nights earlier this year at the Old Town School Of Music we had 7 sell out shows here this year. Chicago has for years always been great to Lu and we’ve always loved coming here.

No matter what kind of year you had in 2016 we hope 2017 will be better- so bring it on.

    Happy New Year!

Had a great time at the shows this week. Had Standing GA at all four shows (I have a really difficult time sitting during a Lu and band show), with thanks to West Words for offering up tickets to the two shows I previously didn’t have tickets for! Also had some great conversations with fans of Lu’s music who were attending their first show. The fact 54 different songs were played, after a several months break, speaks to the cohesiveness of Lu and the band.

As Mrs. backstreets and I were walking from the L station back to our hotel in downtown Chicago at 3 a.m. after the NYE show (actually kind of a fun/interesting ride on the L with the partiers), we agreed that it was the best NYE that we had ever had! Met stoger and West Words for dinner before the show, and got in line an hour before doors opened (thankfully in an indoor hallway – though the weather wasn’t bad for late December in the upper Midwest) and had prime spots for the show. As usual, Buick 6 put on a great opening set!

It was evident from the get go, that Lu and the band and crew were in a great mood! Those Three Days is one of my favorites, but the party definitely seemed to start with Steal Your Love. I thought the aforementioned 5 minute countdown/break (and Butch’s deadpan ‘MC”ing) fit in perfectly with the looseness of the night, followed by a great version of Midnight Hour. Definitely got 2017 off to a rockin’ start!

Here’s a little item in the different {Auld Lang Syne} strokes for different folks dept:

“Back in Opryland, [John] Prine blew past midnight, forgetting to stop and do the countdown. [Kacy] Musgraves appeared near the end of ‘Hello in There,’ tapping Prine on the shoulder and reminding him of his omission. Prine finished the tune while Musgraves awkwardly walked around the stage, and then he led the crowd in singing ‘Happy New Year to You’ in the tune of ‘Happy Birthday’ as balloons dropped.”
