A stupendous night of music was had at the Troubadour in West Hollywood Saturday night. Billed as Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell and Friends, everyone got their money’s worth in one of the best nights in music in a while. It started out with Emmylou, Rodney, and a killer guitarist named Jed Hughes doing some old numbers and some from Emmylou and Rodney’s about to be released record. It was an all acoustic evening, with chairs on the stage. Then the friends started to appear, many of whom were in town for the Grammies. The Zach Brown Band. John Fullbright. Shannon McNally. A guy who is producing Guy Clark’s record, whose name escapes me, but was a killer guitarist himself. From Arkansas. Most of the friends did 2 songs each. J.D. Souther. Joan Osborne. Bonnie Raitt killed, especially on Angel From Montgomery. Joan Baez was also great.

The website was in attendance with Paul from Los Angeles, GrumpMama, and myself. Lu should have been there.

P.S. Stellablueee was in the house!

Thanks, tonyg, for your report. I’ll add some comments.

Shannon McNally performed her marvelous Bohemian Wedding Prayer, accompanied by the house guitarist, who tonyg identified as Jed Hughes.

Joan Baez sang Diamonds and Rust, and modified the ending to “And if you’re offering me diamonds and rust, well I’ll take the Grammy”.

I was very impressed by the audience, which was very attentive and respectful. Although the venue was a rock club on a Saturday night, this was clearly an older audience, each of whom had paid $50 to hear the music, not to chatter on their cellphones. The Troubadour has been functioning as a music venue at the same location for 56 years, and many in the audience had fond memories of past nights of good music.

I envy you guys this show; I knew Shannon headed out there for Grammy week (for that matter, Lillie Mae Rische of the Kenneth Brian Band/Jack White girl band was in the area too I think). Jedd Hughes has done a fine version of Gram Parsons’ “Luxury Liner” and was (is?) part of the Shilah Morrow-Bryson Jones Sin City stable.

My understanding is that Lucinda and Tom were going to Arkansas after the MN gigs, as opposed to directly back to LA.

That list is missing “Bohemian Wedding Prayer”, sung by Shannon McNally.

Jesus. Major omission. Was’t she the first guest performer?

To set the record straight, the official title of the song is “Bohemian Wedding Prayer Song”. When stoger & I saw Shannon & Amy perform in Oxford, MS in December of last year, That’s what I called the song in a pre-show conversation w/ stoger, based on the song’s title from Amy & Shannon’s Chasing The Ghost EP. Roger corrected me, saying it was “Bohemian Wedding Song”, which is indeed how the song is listed on Coldwater. All too often being trumped by stoger’s outstanding musical knowledge, I tucked my tail & made a mental note to look it up.

After the show, we had an opportunity to chat w/ both Amy & Shannon (until the doorman scooted us out into the cold Mississippi night). So, I asked Shannon which was the correct song title. Her reply? “Bohemian Wedding Prayer Song” – “Prayer” had been somehow omitted from the title on Coldwater.

Not trying to show you up, paul_from_losangeles – it’s just so infrequent that I best the Perfesser in a musical “argument” (although, admittedly, based on the two CDs’ liner notes, we each had an equal shot at being correct), I just had to point it out… 😆 😆 😆

No need to tuck tail, Mr. Moderator, you have bested me in past and will again no doubt soon. Let’s get ready to rumble. . . .
