I saw Emmylou Harris Saturday afternoon at an outdoor concert in Ventura. It was their annual concert for the Hillsides Conservancy. The music went on from 1 pm to 5 pm and it was the hottest day of the year in Ventura. WPA opened, followed by the Gin Blossoms, then Colbie Caillat, a local girl from Thousand Oaks. They all played about 45 mintes each. Emmylou hit the stage a little after 4 pm. All the bands played in the full sun. Emmylou was accompanied by the Red Dirt Boys, an all acoustic group with fiddle, mandolin, piano, and acoustic guitars, bass and drums. She was great and in fine voice and played about 90 minutes. Ventura resident Chris Hillman joined her for one song. It was a super fabulous afternoon.
I went looking for a story about the show in the local Ventura paper online and found this comment from some knob:
“Not another Over the Hill Lefty fest ala No Nukes Commie Crowd that do not live here or have any business being here protesting a local issue.
Go back home Emmylou Harris and do something for your own folks like raise more money for the flood victims in Nashville, we don’t want you or need you here!”

Emmylou Harris’s Hard Bargain will be released April 26 on Nonesuch Records. The album follows Harris’s acclaimed 2008 release, All I Intended to Be, which received widespread acclaim—Newsweek called it an album that “shows that Harris is still the stalwart songbird at the top of the roost.” Hard Bargain, which comprises 11 new songs by Harris as well as two covers, was produced by Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Patty Griffin). A deluxe edition of the album includes a DVD featuring six performances interspersed with interviews. Nonesuch Store pre-orders of both editions include an exclusive manuscript lyric sheet of the song “The Road,” a number of which will be signed by Harris.
“We did the whole record in about a month, which is quite unusual for me. But I had all the material beforehand. I’d written 11 of the 13 songs and I really wanted to include two more by other writers,” Harris explains. “One of the covers is Ron Sexsmith’s ‘Hard Bargain,’ which I absolutely love. The other is by Jay Joyce, called ‘Cross Yourself.’
“We did the whole thing with just three musicians, me being one of them. Jay, the producer, and Giles Reeves play everything between them. It’s not a stripped down record though; there’s only one song that’s a little bare bones. I’m basically a slow ballad-y person, but Jay managed to really move the songs up a bit. But they still have the same emotional feel.”
Two of the album’s songs look back at relationships that were central to Harris’ creative life. She wrote “Darlin’ Kate” for her close friend and collaborator Kate McGarrigle, who died last year of a rare form of cancer, while “The Road” casts its eye further back to the formative time Harris spent with country/rock icon Gram Parsons at the beginning of her career.
A 12-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris’s contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

A double present for me.
1. got “The Road” free download. It’s great and her new album with DVD and possibly her autograph sounds like a purchase for me.
2. From Emmylou’s tour page for 2011, she will be attending the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, ON in early July. It’s a great outdoor festival and for me, about a 3 hour drive.
This will be the 2nd time I hope to see her. 1st was at U of B in Buffalo last November.lwj

You lucky devil. You’re in for treat to see her live this tour, and it’ll be after you become familiar with the new record. I have always loved Emmylou and have seen her live many times, I’ve never been disappointed. Back in 1996, the summer Olympics were held in Atlanta. Of course, there was the bombing incident that threw everything into a dark cloud. Just a black time for us all, naturally. The day after the bombing, Emmylou appeared at an outdoor Decatur, Ga. venue . The timing couldn’t have been better. Security and tension were tight but Emmylou and band brought a balm that definitely did some healing that night.That’s where Emmylou and Lucinda share the same gift. The ability to transform dark reality into hope.
