Confirming what Tim posted in the Thursday topic, I just listened to the KCRW interview and Lucinda said that Steve Earle and Jim Lauderdale would be sitting in for the Car Wheels set tonight.
She also said that Bruce Springsteen was invited to one of the New York shows (and “is going to try to make it”) and that Sonic Youth will be the guest at the Essence night in New York.
Looking forward to tonight … less than four hours to go…
September 9, 2007 at 7:55 am #33546lanewbie2003ParticipantJust a quick note on the guests for those who are curious:
Jim Lauderdale, Steve Earle, Allison Moore, Marvin Etzioni, Mike Campbell
and the show: oh my oh my!!!
September 9, 2007 at 6:35 pm #33547TimParticipantIncredible show last night; one of the best I’ve ever seen. Jim Lauderdale & Steve Earle on stage for most of “Car Wheels” set. MIke Campbell played guitar on “Greenville” & “Joy”. Doug Pettibone & Mike turning “Joy” into a guitar orgy. Allison Moorer (Steve’s wife) sang with Lucinda on “Still I Long”. Crowd ecstatic all night long. Opened 2nd set with “Where Is My Love’ & “Fruits Of My Labor”. Can’t recall all the songs but the 2nd set can’t be described properly it was so good. Mike Campbell stayed out there for about the last six songs. Doug, Butch & David Sutton all had tremedous nights. Songs I can remember: Righteously, Come On, Honey Bee, Jailhouse Tears (Great duet with Steve Earle), Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies, Unsuffer Me, Wrap My Head Around That, Change The Locks, maybe more. I’ll be surprised if the roof is still on The El Rey when I get there tonight.
Lu said that Emmylou Harris will be at one of the shows. Could be tonight since she’s doing the Sweet Old World album. Emmylou covered “Sweet Old World”; and I also expect her to do “Greenville” again since Emmylou sang on the record. Marvin Etzioni also played with the band alot in the 2nd set (Mandolin, tambourine, maraccas). He was with the band Lone Justice and a LA fixture.September 9, 2007 at 6:49 pm #33548TimParticipantSorry, I forgot to mention Chet Lyster who again played very well (Electric guitar, keys, pedal steel).
September 9, 2007 at 7:32 pm #33549paul_from_losangelesParticipantThanks, Tim, for the excellent review.
For trivia buffs, in the Car Wheels set, Steve Earle played harmonica on Drunken Angel, instead of Doug.
Here is the second set list of songs:
1. Where Is My Love?
2. Fruits of My Labor
3. Pineola
4. Jailhouse Tears (Steve & Lucinda)
5. You’re Still Standing There (Steve & Lucinda, singing Steve’s song)
6. Righteously
7. Changed the Locks
8. Come On
9. Wrap My Head Around That
10. Unsuffer Me
11. Honey Bee
12. Mama, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys
13. Come To Me, BabySeptember 9, 2007 at 8:23 pm #33550LeftyParticipantThanks to all out on the Left Coast who are taking the time to post setlists, comments, etc. on these tremendous-sounding shows. Sign me up for purchasing these discs once they’re out (I’m an optimist 8)) ❗
September 9, 2007 at 10:14 pm #33551TimParticipantPaul, thanks for the 2nd setlist. I also made a mistake; Allison Moorer sang on “Greenville”, not “Still I Long”. Lefty, I hope that you’re right about the CD’s.
September 10, 2007 at 1:58 pm #33552Disco StuParticipantThanks for the reviews, folks…sounds like it was another great show. I’d love to hear the duets with Steve Earle, especially on You’re Still Standing There…I love that song.
September 10, 2007 at 4:49 pm #33553MTParticipantFor the record, Steve Earle had never heard ‘Jailhouse Tears’. Lucinda said something like this before starting into the song, “Steve’ll get it right. He’s a genius.”
September 11, 2007 at 11:30 am #33554jackstrawParticipantholy shit, batman. that 2nd set with car wheels to open. look like a great night. 1 question, was long for your kiss done as a shuffle (album) or the slower paced soul/blues format?
September 12, 2007 at 2:39 pm #33555TimParticipantHi jackstraw. It was done the way they’ve been doing it on the tour this year. Slower and more bluesy. It really was a great night.

September 12, 2007 at 6:01 pm #33557jackstrawParticipantperfect, thanks for the update tim. she melts me when she growls *the days go by* bridge when the song’s done in soul/blues mode. now, if the 2nd set at towne hall’s car wheels night could be half as good as the one at el rey, the ny attendees should be in for a great night.
