This record, which comes out on June 28 will be a great one. I’ll be seeing Eilen and the band in Greenfield, MA on Friday night. They just keep getting better and better. Eilen reminds me alot of Lucinda Williams, when Lucinda was her age. (32 on April 6)

They played alot of songs from “Letters From Sinners & Strangers” and “Sea Of Tears”, did two Loretta Lynn songs, and three terrific songs from their upcoming album; “I Remember You”, “Santa Fe” and “Queen Of The Minor Key”. This is as tight a unit as you will see anywhere!
April 5, 2011 at 2:07 pm #46529stogerParticipantWhat, EJ’s an Aries too? Humbly, I am in those ranks, as is Miller Williams, etc. I think MIller might be same day as Jewell. Nice Portsmouth vibe, didn’t you think Tim? And I’m wondering if there’s any chance she and her band may be the Lu opener before long, continuing in the great tradition of. . . well, too many to name here. Some are in fact named in lefthand column of this Forum thread. At any rate, give us a report of the show, Tim.
April 5, 2011 at 4:00 pm #46530TimParticipantYes Roger, the night had a “Portsmouth” vibe to it. It was nice to see Eilen watching one of her biggest influences that night. Her music is so real and earthy, almost a throwback to the ’30’s & ’40’s. We thought she ended the night with an incredible version of “If You Catch Me Stealin’ “, a song Bessie Smith once did, which got people up & moving. She and her band really Swing!, it’s just natural. After they left the stage, they returned to do the title song from the new record (Queen Of The Minor Key); a title that Eilen richly deserves. Her songwriting has really taken off. They’ve played more than 150 shows the last four years, and this year will be no different. It would be nice to see her do some shows with Lucinda, but I wouldn’t be happy with only a 45 minute set.
She did show us where she has three signatures on her guitar. Loretta Lynn, Lucinda Williams and Mavis Staples; not too bad there.April 5, 2011 at 6:39 pm #46532TimParticipantA mention of the record that is 2 1/2 months from being released:

September 16, 2011 at 6:47 pm #46536LafayetteParticipantEilen is playing a gig this evening at The Southgate House and is set to do an on air sometime in the 4 o clock hour on WNKU — this after earlier this afternoon it was announced she wasn’t going to make it as their van “threw a transmission” somewhere past Ft. Wayne, IN on their way to Newport, Ky (Cincinnati).

I really wish I could live up to legacy of the friendly forum per tonyg, ala a tad mental, 😆 however sanity is prevailing and I’m opting to stay home and paint.
September 16, 2011 at 6:57 pm #46537tonygKeymasterThat’s what I said and ended up getting home at 1:45 am. 😀

YES! It’s a way of life around here. 😆 😆 😆 The kiddo is back in school and I have 3 rooms I want to repaint (all bedrooms). I’m planning on painting stripes + still stripping the furniture from this room. Almost finished with the bed. I’m under pressure. I’ve taken over one side of the garage and the better half would really like his parking spot back before the frost starts. I’ll probably only get the bed finished and will have to do the dresser and wash stand next spring.
Now that this thread is completely high jacked I had to run errands during the 4:00 hour after getting a call from the kiddo he forgot his water bottle and shoes for cross country and I forgot to listen to the On Air! It’s scary I forgot that quickly but it really is par for the course.

September 20, 2011 at 9:18 pm #46541stogerParticipantWell, with all due respect to the scintillating prose up around Lafayette’s household chore-mongering, I went to an Eilen Jewell show last night and hope that no one will mind if I see fit to return the stream to its original titled subject matter. She played several from the new record at the Basement Nashville last night, though not my favorite–“Over Again,” featuring Zoe Muth on back-up vocals.
Eilen and her drummer/husband (Jason I think) were gracious before and after show, mentioning the dinner they had had with Lucinda and Tom, in New Hampshire I think. I actually was in the row in front of them at that Portsmouth show last March, which I reminded them of. This produced only baffled looks and the same sort of “where do you live exactly?” lines which I get so so often in such contexts. Anyway, it was a fine show–though perhaps not up to the Knoxville Scottish pub where their previous week’s show was the first one in the history of that venue. Smaller crowd in Knoxville, as reported by a couple who attended both TN shows. Eilen is a complete professional regardless of crowd level, or in the case of last night, a puzzling co-bill status which probably clipped off 3-5 songs from what she would normally play. No need to name the other band on the co-bill, though Eilen was good enough to acknowledge them from the mike.
Two Loretta tunes, “Deep As Your Pocket” (compare the Tres Chicas studio version) and “Fist City.”
Although no party lobbied for this in any direct way, it was clear from the conversation that EJ would not refuse any potential opener consideration or status. Of course none of us felt it proper to discuss that topic too spot-on.
OK, back to Ohio water bottles and house painting and so on now. 😀
September 21, 2011 at 12:39 am #46542TimParticipantStoger, Eilen just announced that she and her band will be playing in Athens, TN on January 20. I think it’s about 100 miles from you; hopefully you can make it out there!
