doris duke’s stellar I’M A LOSER is a big jewel from southern soul. and i’ve never heard about this lady/album in my life until 3 days ago (and i’m crazy about soul). life is not the same.
after violeta parra and this, please don’t think i’m gonna come here every week to namedrop an artist i like, but I’M A LOSER is a superb companion piece to al green’s CALL ME (which was by far the best record i’ve listened to in 2011), and it deserves to find avid listeners, clean ears and reverent attention. the plight is earned, not earnest, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone suffering in the love department in a more mesmerizing, traumatic, shady manner. it’s bouncy, too. ann peebles kinda bouncy.
get it. all kinds of sublime!!!
