There may be another consonant or two in that surname. Anyway, here is another tale of what might ensue when one wears Lu merch in public (in this case, that “fan club” Car Wheels longsleeve which erstwhile manager Callari mailed out some 18 months after our credit cards were charged). At a reception in Oxford, MS involving the Conference on Creative Nonfiction, I was approached by a gent who turned out to be former manager (or did he say tour manager?) for the likes of Maria Muldaur, Bonnie Raitt, and Buddy Guy. DW is a photographer too (that’s the context in which his name seemed familiar to me) and now lives in Oxford. Anyway, he told a couple of fine tales about Lu in LA some years ago, including being backstage near her when she won the Gram for songwriting (“Passionate Kisses”). Also, he told a tale of a personal letter Lu wrote to him after he was rebuffed by security at, I think it was, LA House of Blues; he apparently never got to take her photo that evening. We discussed the back of the shirt, with the Birney Imes juke joint design. Imes lives not far from north Miss. at all. A good time was had by all. So as Matt Blake might say, “buy that swag and keep it laundered up.”

I was perusing You Tube last night and happened upon this recent upload – the studio version of ‘2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten’ as described in the caption with “photos from the Mississippi Delta, Clarksdale, Birney Imes “Juke Joint” and Juke Joint Festivals.”

Good stuff, lafayette. You might have time to do a background check on Mr. Waterman too, to see if his credentials are up to snuff? 🙂
May 6, 2013 at 3:11 pm #50773LafayetteParticipantYes, Mr. Waterman has quite the history. Many interesting finds. Will report later.
May 6, 2013 at 11:47 pm #50774TOverbyParticipantMr. Waterman is an amazing guy -not only probably the greatest blues photographer/chronicler -but also was one of three friends who went down to Mississippi from New York in the early 60’s to look for legendary Delta blues singer Son House -only to discover that he was living in Rochester NY. There is a great book about the whole story -a quick but great read.
Oh yeah -incredibly he also managed Skip James at one point.
No one and I mean no one has the credibility in that world.
At some point soon I want him to take some pics of Lu -when she does her blues album I would want him to do the cover.May 7, 2013 at 6:11 am #50775LafayetteParticipantQuite the person you bumped into there, stoger. There are many articles on Dick, I thought this was a good interview regarding Son House and fairly recent.

Apparently, he was at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival in 2011, and according to his blog, was having camera issues but was able to capture one good shot of Lu. It is not posted to his website, a treasure trove of photos, as TO said.

“The result was piss poor results with lots and lots of blurred motion. Fortunately, I have shot Buddy Guy and Curtis Salgado often in the past so I didn’t really need to add anything of them. I had very few decent shots of anything but did come away with one Lucinda Williams image that I like.”
Dick’s website with photo gallery link. Highly recommend.
