23 It’s a Long Way to the TopGreat show, dense crowd, Lu into it. She mentioned she will be part of a Jimmy Webb record to be cut in Nashville, and that “Galveston” might be the song she does.
Butch told us to “imagine it’s Saturday night” for purposes of greeting Lu when she came on.
Susannah admitted she never goes to this web site (ouch) when told by a certain regular poster/fan (not me) that she is quite the phenomenon on this Forum.
Beyond this, I will let another speculate on tune seven and its implications. Special night.

Nice! Sounds like someone got a special little “shout out”…

“She sang everything – old and new songs alike – with passion and precision. Put simply, it was magic at the Madison.”
Nice!

June 11, 2009 at 5:42 pm #39828tonygKeymasterAnother great setlist. Someone should be happy. Susannah apparently is not easily impressed. Or impressed at all, really.
June 11, 2009 at 5:47 pm #39829thejolo1980Participanti was there last night front and center. i was about 3 people deep from the stage directly in front of lucinda. this was my 5th time seeing lucinda and i have to say it was the best show i have seen from her. i brought 2 friends with me, one of which had never seen her before. when she started i was not sure how the night was going to go. being so close to the stage, the music seemed to overpower her voice for the first 2 songs and i could barely hear her. after big red sun blues, she told the crew to turn her mic up and for the rest of the night it was a perfect balance between her voice and the music.
the 1st of 2 highlights for me personally was hearing side of the road live for the 1st time. i decided to record it on my camera and it turned out really good. the only downside was this drunk guy in front of me who pushed his way to the front of the stage and kept getting in my way. i will try to post it on youtube when i figure out how to upload videos lol. the 2nd highlight for me was during the best performance of joy i have seen in a long time. the drunk guy in front of me decided to go get another beer at this point and left me with a pretty decent amount of space between me and the people right at the front of the stage. this may sound a little corny but i was singing along with lucinda and watching her intently and for about 3 or 4 seconds i caught her watching me and she let out a big grin as our eyes locked. i could not get her attention for the rest of the night but for those few seconds it was pretty damn awesome.
besides a few rude people who had pushed their way to the front right before she came on, after a lot of people had been there waiting, the only other thing i had noticed that i found to be very off putting was an older man who was standing next to my friend who clearly was wasted beyond belief. about a quarter of the way into the show he took out a joint and lit up, which wasnt so bad but he purposely blew the smoke up onto stage in chets face. a little later on he took out a pill bottle which had another joint in it and smoked that up, only this time he blew the smoke directly into lucindas face. she looked really annoyed and i almost thought she was going to stop the song and say something.
before the show started my friends and i had dinner at a korean restaurant down the street from the theatre. as we were walking there we noticed a few of the band members walking around which was pretty cool. i did manage to get about 50 or 60 pics of lucinda during the concert which i will try and post sometime soon. i guess i have to get a facebook page or something. i will link it when i get them up. i asked my friend who had never seen her live before if she would see her again and she replied with a definite yes. so all in all it was an amazing night and i hope she gets back this way very soon.
June 11, 2009 at 6:15 pm #39830tonygKeymasterExcellent report. Glad you enjoyed the show. I have only stood in front of the stage for a couple shows and I never saw any drunks or stoners doing their things. I guess you got lucky. I also sat in the very first row of the Malibu show a few years ago, slightly to one side of Lucinda, and she never came close to looking my way. Not that I blame her.
June 11, 2009 at 6:56 pm #39831LafayetteParticipantI agree, TonyG, excellent report, jolo. Unfortunate events for you. There’s one or two or three or four in every crowd. I do, however, look forward to your photos and video footage!
I have much to report, unfortunately, I am having either connectivity issues or computer issues, not sure which. The words I am typing are not catching up on a real time basis . There’s a major a delay. I’m close to throwing the computer across the room. HA!
Yes, it was truly a magical night. I hope to write something up later this evening.
June 11, 2009 at 7:27 pm #39832LeftyParticipantThanks for checking in, jolo. Looking forward to seeing your pix.
And, CB, looking forward to your take on Covington.June 12, 2009 at 2:31 am #39833LafayetteParticipantPre-Show:
I emailed WNKU afternoon music host, JP, the set list stoger posted from the previous night at “The Vogue” as talking points knowing he would be spinning songs to promote show. Sure enough, he spoke about “The Vogue” show with additional commentary about her setlists, playing a twofer…”Pineola” from “Live At The Fillmore” and Honey Bee.
Today, I called to thank JP for passing my name along to Bill Thompson, the reporter that wrote the preview and today’s “spot on” review of last night’s show. JP is a Lu fan but couldn’t make it. I told him it was a packed house, wonderful show. About 15 minutes after my call, he played “Unsuffer Me”, talked about the calls he was receiving about last night’s show, Lu playing to a packed house ;-).
Missed Setlist Observations:
As Lu walked to the microphone to begin her set, she spotted stoger, smiled and said something (I couldn’t hear), immediately moved her lyrics stand to the side of her, clearing the view for our favorite reporter.
I may have the song incorrect, but I believe after “Unsuffer Me,” Eric received a smile and an approving kiss on the cheek from Lu.This was the song that stoger received one of those “WOW” looks from me. “Fancy Funeral” and “Joy” were additional standouts other than that “one” song.
A fan grabbed Lu’s setlist from the stage as she waited in the wings before her encore. So totally uncool, IMO, but, fortunately, she didn’t seem to notice…
The SONG:
I was told afterward, that yes, the premiere of “Lafayette” on this leg of tour was for me(I’m trying to be humble here, really) for all the fan support as well as the back story with the article that ran in Sunday’s paper. I was told the band practiced the song together but not with Lu. If I have this correct (I just remembered) Lu was going to do solo acoustic but then opted to bring the band out. Beautiful rendition. Flawless. I was totally blown away by the gesture. A Grammy winning musician that doesn’t personally know a fan, reaches out to them with a song. Absolutely amazing and an event I will NEVER forget. Thank you TO for orchestrating, thank you Buick 6 for providing the beautiful instrumentation, and above all, thank you LU for reaching out to this fan with a song where it all began for me. I’m still in awe!
stoger, thank you for the friendship and reaching out to me at that Atlanta show. Sharing the music with fellow fans always makes it all the more special and…fun.
Afterthoughts:
Stevarino, not sure what happened with you, I hope all is well. I didn’t see you at the show and you haven’t checked in here all that much. I know you are a true blue Lu fan. BTW. Chez (pronounced sha with a long a 😆 )Nora was certainly the spot. The best balsamic vinaigrette dressing on a salad I have ever had! The provided Dylan soundtrack added to the ambiance. Will have to check out the rooftop view next time.
June 12, 2009 at 2:43 am #39834thejolo1980Participantlafayette, that same “fan” who took the setlist is the same drunk i was talking about in my post, and i agree, totally uncool. if only i was a bit bigger i would have beat the crap out of him lol

Ha Ha! I was afraid of that! That “fan”, I swear, was not like that at all when I met him at The Southgate House. I was working a volunteer table at the Chris Smither show, he came over to check things out, so I asked him if he knew about Lu’s show in Covington (he was from Lexington). He said he didn’t but thanked me, saying he would check it out.
We ran into him beforehand and he remembered me, thanked me (again) for telling him about the show, and said had it not been for me, he wouldn’t have been there.
Uh, oh. Slap me. I’ll buy you a beer at the next show.
June 12, 2009 at 3:23 am #39836tonygKeymasterGreat stuff Lafayette. Maybe I’ll change my name to Wrap My Head Around That.
