As Charlie Louvin turns 83 this July, he is discovering a new foe. He recently went in to see the doctor with what seemed to be a minor complaint, and came back with a diagnosis of stage 2 pancreatic cancer.
Suddenly, the success of his soon-to-be-released, new CD is not nearly as important as Charlie’s victory over one of the most virulent forms of cancer. He has been through a lot in his 83 years, but this hurdle is one he was not counting on.
On July 22nd, Charlie will go in for a complex, six hour surgery at the Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. It’s called the Whipple Procedure.
Charlie’s family and friends are encouraged that he will be in good hands, but they definitely covet your prayers.
Of course, Charlie won’t be able to perform for a few weeks after his surgery, but, being the resolute, tough guy that he is, he tentatively hopes he can be back on stage by August 21st, 2010.
Oh my, this is terrible news. I’ll never forget one evening in Birmingham, AL several years ago, when Mr. Louvin was opening for Lu at the Alabama Theater, before the show, he sat outside the stage door on a curbside planter & chatted with Sarah, me, Tim (of this forum) & Tim’s Mom. He was charming, engaging & every bit a true Southern Gentleman…
He will definitely be in my thoughts over the coming days & weeks.

Will pray that some Holy Ghost power comes Mr. Louvin’s way to help him fight that cancer. Godspeed, sir!
Hopefully he can beat this. He has an uphill battle. My grandfather battled pancreatic/liver cancer for a year and a half.
Good thoughts and prayers going to Charlie and family.WOW…so sorry to hear that. Pancreatic cancer is one of the worse. The Mellenhead community lost a fellow fan, in her mid 30’s, to the disease, in less than a year.

Bell Buckle, Tenn., – Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member Charlie Louvin of the legendary Louvin Brothers is fighting pancreatic cancer.
In an effort to help defray Louvin’s astronomical medical costs, the Bell Buckle Banquet Hall in historic Bell Buckle, Tenn., is hosting a benefit concert and auction Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 from noon to 9 p.m. The event will be hosted by Louvin and Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike.
Confirmed performers include: Ed Bruce, writer of the hit song “Mama’s, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” and the actor who played the sheriff on the popular TV program Maverick; and Indiana bluegrass music legends the Wildwood Valley Boys.
