Agree Tim, in the performances I saw, Lucinda’s voice was strong and clear, and better than her vocals on Little Honey. Of course I’m a card-carrying cheerleader, so what do I know?

His perspective on the whole music thing is very interesting and well-rounded indeed–in this case he touches on empty seats as it appears from the performer’s viewpoint:
The NY promoter has urged that we add a second Radio City date (February 28th) and I have agreed. I had to think about it for a few days, as it’s a big place and the possibility of playing to a half-filled hall on the second night would be both depressing and bad for my rep. There’s something about the proximity of bodies in a theater that generates excitement and energy. Granted the top balconies could be empty and no one would know, but empty seats scattered here and there in the orchestra and lower balconies generally makes it harder for an audience to achieve release, to let go and enjoy themselves…The first show is almost sold out after being on sale for only a couple of weeks and with only one significant ad — so that was an argument in favor of adding the second show. With more ads and posters around town, more people will know about the event; many friends I meet have no idea when I’m playing NYC. “Oh, you’re on tour! When will you be playing New York?” — so if we can reach those folks there is a chance the second show will do OK. Maybe even better than OK. (There is also the small matter of the economic meltdown, but Geiger says there has been less impact on “quality” acts, which I guess he means includes me.)
January 7, 2009 at 7:29 pm #38395stellablueeeParticipanti’ve bit my tongue long enough about ole david byrne……
he’s talented for sure (i love that building he hooked up to the piano so people could “play the building” )but…….when i met him during his talking heads days, he was such an arrogant a-hole that ever since, i’m quite careful about meeting artists who’s work i love
he was ruined for me after that incident (and i’m very forgiving)say what you want, defend him, attack me, but i really don’t come to the lucinda site to read about david bryne…….(not trying to censor, might be better under singers/songwriters)
i’ll never forgive his a-holeness, even if he wins points with me by riding his bike all over new york city (maybe he’s humbled with age, but i’ll never take a chance on him again)
there sure are a lot of great shows at this venue…..hey tim, hope you’re keeping warm!
lisaJanuary 7, 2009 at 7:54 pm #38396DavidinMaineParticipantI have met many artists from across the spectrum over the years (db, NY, LWs, Elvis C., Rob Wasserman, Bob Weir, Nick Lowe, Bill Kirchen, Chris Franz, Bo Diddley, Emmylou Harris, Natalie Merchant, Tina Weymouth, The Subdudes, BNL, John Prine, Tim Easton…) and have come to realize that it is very difficult traveling from town-to-town having 500-plus “friends” wherever they go. The times that I have spoken to db among others, I have come to realize that some people are quite shy–especially db. Plus, what does he owe us/you anyway? Isn’t the music enough? I have had several conversations with him and know that he is much more of a one-on-one person and that’s OK by me–I treasure each time that I have organically connected with LWs and db along with others, too. Finally, I think it’s nice to infuse other information into any forum–you know, so one gets a more thorough picture of what’s out there. Like in this case, dwindling ticket sales from the edge of the stage. Isn’t it nice to get different viewpoints from around the campfire? After all, everyone brings something to a conversation…
January 7, 2009 at 11:48 pm #38397tonygKeymasterInteresting quote from DB, but I think he is wrong. The economy does have an impact on “quality acts”. I would even think it would be more of an impact, since they may have higher prices.
And I agree with Stella that you have to be careful when you meet artists you love because they could be jerks. Or at least a jerk for the one second they are enduring your presence.
This is a good time to say that I have said hello to every member of Lucinda’s band at one time or other in the past 5 years and every single one of them was super fabulously friendly to me and did not recoil in horror. So there.
January 8, 2009 at 1:11 am #38398stellablueeeParticipanti took all the things you’ve said into account, after all, what do they owe us……they’re humans with ups and downs of their own….most musicians are neurotic on one level or another.
that being said, i know the difference between blatant disrespect and arrogance vs being standoffish, shy, upset over another issue or whatever.
there’ are some artists that i know to be “moody” / i just give them a wide berth.
i do feel bad for them when they want to go out and just be left alone cuz / they don’t feel like chit chatting or answering the same question for the millionith time.or like what someone posted here about the night lucinda showed up at carrie’s show at the hotel cafe. they bagged on how she was dressed when she looked great (a very cool decorated wifebeater tucked into jeans and heels for a bar in hollywood? she lit that place up & made it look good)
like i said, maybe he’s mellowed with age.
i thought the post belonged elsewhere (and who made me the forum cop) but i see now that it
has to do with touring……just disregard…it’s been quiet, i guess i was stirring the pot, sorry.as far as Mr. David Byrne, he’ll never see any of my dollars, ever….
i’m sure he doesn’t give a mouse’s behind…….i’ve cut way back on shows just because of money alone. it’s time to save (that’s why i only saw lucinda’s so cal shows, i missed the fillmore shows)
lisaJanuary 9, 2009 at 8:31 pm #38399bobParticipantI just got a single ticket for 6th row! (none of my friends like her)
The last time she played there I also found a ticket pretty late…I think the newer music is great, as well as Honey Bee is one of her best CD’s.
The mellow shows are great, I like them all but the upbeat, rowdy ones are more fun(IE Orpheum in Boston- that was my favorite show yet)
Anyone want to meet before the show for cocktails?Anybody from around Western MA wanna go to Burlington VT?
January 12, 2009 at 5:28 pm #38400TimParticipantI’ve got tickets to the Calvin Theatre and the Burlington shows. Also waiting for the Concord, NH show to go onsale. The Rochester show is Lefty’s.
